Jonah 2:2a ANNUAL MEETING The 2017 Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, January 27, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. All are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Then, directed to Bethlehem, the wise men found a sight so utterly out of keeping with a king a poor young woman and child, in a poor hut that one might expect them to head straight Meetings for January 2019 Iowa River Hospice Grief Healers Support Group will meet on Thursday, January 3, at 1:00 p.m. in our conference room at 502 Plaza Heights Road. We warmly welcome any who have experienced the recent loss of a loved one, generally within the last few years. While grief is a normal healthy journey, it can be challenging and difficult. You do not have to make that journey alone! We meet the first Thursday of each month and you are always welcome to attend. Questions? This group regularly meets the third Friday of each month at Hope United Methodist Church 2203 South 3 rd Ave. in Marshalltown. Volunteers can be available for companionship for your loved one so caregivers are free to attend. The role of caregiver is one of the most challenging and support is helpful. A Hymn Sing will be held on Sunday, January 20, at 6:00 p.m. Chad Mussig will present the program of organ music. Refreshments will follow the Hymn Sing. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Meaning of Epiphany Epiphany, which comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, means an appearance or a revealing. Centuries ago, the church set aside January 6, the 12th day after Christmas, to mark the revealing of Jesus as Christ to the wise men, who were Gentiles. Jesus first followers were Jewish, so the revelation of the divine Christ to the non-jewish magi reminds us that Jesus came to earth to save the whole world. Symbols of Epiphany include light, a star, a crown (or three crowns) and a globe or stylized portrayal of the world. The color of Epiphany is green to symbolize life, growth, hope and eternity. On the church calendar, the Epiphany season lasts until Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter. PWC News Elizabeth Circle will not meet in January or February. Sarah Circle will meet Tuesday, January 15 at 9:15 in the Lower Lounge. Wynona Anderson and Jinita Boyd will hostess, Mary Hemming will give the devotion. The program is not set as of yet. We may have a report on the families affected by the tornado. All women of the church are invited. Camp News It is not too early to start thinking about camp during the summer of 2019. Be watching for camp posters around the church after the New Year. Sunday School Rotation Sunday school began their unit on Jonah on January 6. Cookie Baking Day First Presbyterian Church hosted cookie baking for tornado affected families on December 8. Several families came and enjoyed making Christmas cookies. They were also able to select needed items, quilts, and gifts for their families from items collected by the Gutekunst Public Library in State Center. The children and families appreciated the opportunity to carry on their holiday traditions despite the trouble the tornado has caused in their lives. God Sightings Plan to start the new year with an eye to see God in your daily life as the children did last summer at VBS: VBS!! get to go to church, supplied good food, sibling friendship, getting listening stick, allergy was safe, fish died and got new one, helpful friends, grandparents, ham, flowers blooming and Nature. Wednesday Club You know that Wednesday Club is an afterschool program sponsored and run by First Presbyterian Church that meets at the Gathering Place on Wednesdays. You may even know that kids are served a snack, learn a Bible story, make a craft, and play games. But what does Wednesday Club really do? A boy, I ll call George (not his name), was new to Wednesday Club last year. A bright boy, he was eager to try all the activities but quick to get angry. He struggled to get along with other children, even the boys who were his friends. Trouble often started on the bus ride to Wednesday Club, and he would arrive with tears in his eyes. He kicked and poked others at snack time and would end up in tears. During the lesson time he would brighten, eagerly sharing some days. Others the Bible point hit too close to home and withdrew or bothered others. He worried that his behavior would get him kicked out and almost dared us to send him home. Mom cared, and she tried, but she was weary of his behavior, tired of getting calls from school, not sure he was being treated fairly. She had several other children, was expecting again, and dealing with a nasty divorce and custody fight. Nancy VanWyk took George under her wing, listening to him when he wanted to talk and sitting by him during activities. Some days they walked around the parking lot until he was ready to rejoin the group. She was someone he could trust, someone who listened, and someone who helped him understand his own behavior. Wednesday Club became a fun, safe space for him. The CE prayer team had been praying faithfully that his needs, whatever they all were, would be met. At the end of the first year George s behavior had improved, and he was no longer aggressive with others. But he was still a child in turmoil, sad and angry. We sent him off, several of us worried what the summer would bring for him. In the first days after the tornado, several volunteers and I went to check on Wednesday Club families in the affected neighborhoods, and we quickly saw that George s home was spectacularly damaged. (Pictures of it have graced many local and national tornado damage videos.) We couldn t locate him or his family for two days. When Angie Pietig, his teacher, finally reached them, they were staying with family out of town and it didn t look like they d be back. The CE prayer team continued to pray for George and his family. When I received his registration this fall, I was so glad he was back, but a bit fearful how he was. On the first day he bounded in with his little sister, a newcomer to Wednesday Club. He was happier than we d seen him, and we learned that he is a devoted big brother. We learned his family five children and a newborn - spent 2 months in a motel before getting an apartment. Mom said life was getting better. George continues to do well, and this fall he was a natural leader among the kids. He could be counted on to share an important insight or the message that God loves us. I have since learned that many things have changed in George s family since last spring. His father has stopped badmouthing his mother, and their divorce and custody issues have been handled more amicably since then. George has been allowed to love his family, and himself, without fear. matter what. On the last day of Wednesday Club, we give the new kids their own Bibles. George and another girl, across the street neighbors, both lost theirs in the tornado, so we replaced them that day. Not only was George happy to have his Bible again, but his mom was touched that we cared enough to replace the Bible. What role did Wednesday Club play in this wonderful turn-around? What did we do for George? What did the volunteers do? The bus rides, the snacks, the prayers? I don t know. But I want to thank each and every one of you who came to sing, play with, and lead the children. Thank you to the youth helpers who spent their afternoons with the kids. Thank you to those who made snacks, cleaned grapes, cut up apples, made Kool-aid, cleaned up, played ping pong, rode the bus, drove the bus, fixed the bus, bought a new bus when the garage roof landed on the old bus, talked up Wednesday Club at school, gave kids and youth helpers rides from other schools, and donated games and supplies. Thank you to the many people who donated Bibles for the children in the past year. Thank you to Pastor Rich for presenting the Bibles to the children, for grilling for our special family program, and always encouraging and supporting the program. Special thank you to all who prayed for George and his family, Wednesday Club, the children, volunteers and all the special needs that come up. At Wednesday Club we plant the seed, or water the seed, but don t often get to see it blossom. Planting and watering are important, and we are blessed to get to do that at Wednesday Club, too. But back to our question - what role did Wednesday Club play in George s turn around? As I said, I don t know. But I don t have to know because I do know that God, who is good all the time, placed this ministry in front of us, and He has called us to it each in our own way. And through this ministry we met George. And God s grace has been showered on George, as it is on all of us. And we were blessed to see it. Wednesday Club is, and we are, part of George s story. We are along his path, just as he is alongside ours. And I thank God for that. ---Michelle Wilkinson Awesome Presbys Awesome Presbys have been busy bringing the Christmas spirit to others this month. Several participated in Soup and Sing and two helped with the Cookie Baking Day. With Janell Dommer s help, they sang Christmas carols while ringing the bells, encouraging many to put money in the Salvation Army bucket at HyVee. They also helped in many ways with the community Christmas dinner. They will meet on Sunday, January 13, at 2:00 in the Gathering Place. Luke s Ministry Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of winter depression that affects an estimated half a million people every winter between September and April, in particular during December, January and February. Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mind, metabolism and behavior. Human beings are just the same. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, symptoms are severe enough to disrupt their lives and cause considerable distress. These people are suffering from SAD. Sufferers have to endure most of the following: 1. Sleep problems - oversleeping but not refreshed; cannot get out of bed; needing a nap in the afternoon. 2. Overeating - carbohydrate craving leading to weight gain. 3. Depression, despair, misery, guilt, anxiety - normal tasks become frustratingly difficult. 4. Family/Social Problems - avoiding company, irritability, loss of libido or loss of feeling. 5. Behavioral Problems - especially in young people. 6. Physical Symptoms - Joint pain, stomach problems or lowered resistance to infections. 7. Lethargy - too tired to cope; everything is an effort. The problem stems from lack of bright light; thus, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a light box or similar bright light therapy device. Researches have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which this occurs is not known. Going to a brightly lit climate (whether skiing or somewhere hot is indeed a cure). The preferred level of light is about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day. For most people sitting in front of a light box allowing the light to reach the eyes between 15 and 45 minutes daily will be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. The user does not have to stare at the light, but can watch TV or read, just as long as light is reaching the eyes. People with symptoms are encouraged to see their physician for an appropriate diagnosis. A SAD Association can also be contacted for further information. (Please check the expiration dates to make sure the food items are not outdated.) Food or monetary (check/cash) donations may be brought to the EFB (109 S. 3rd St.) any weekday afternoon, 1:30-4:30. Congratulations to Abby & John Knox of Madrid, Iowa who are the proud parents of a baby boy, Louie Patrick, who was born Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 3:45 p.m. Louie weighed in at 9# and 11oz. and was 21 long. Mom and baby are doing well. Louie will be welcomed home by big brother Rhett. Pat and Nancy Kremer are the very proud grandparents. Thank you for the lovely fruit basket. We will enjoy it this Holiday Season. A special thank you to Greg and Suzanne Brown for their tender care throughout the year. Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new! The new year brings hope for better things and new beginnings. We make resolutions and start new programs to get into shape or lose weight. The new year becomes a line drawn in the sand of time. Time to change what we don t like and become the person we wish we could be. The problem is that we are who we are because of both the good habits and sins we have cultivated through our lives. If we are going to change something, then we must undo the training we have done over the years before. It takes time, encouragement and new knowledge to change. We normally don t have the ability to do it by ourselves. We need help! First, we need spiritual help. Many of our struggles are rooted in our sinfulness. Repentance is the process of turning our old habits over to God and looking to God for new direction for our lives. Without yielding control to God we will never be able to overcome our old patterns of behavior. Next, we need accountability, we need others to hold us to our goal. The family of God is meant to be this for our lives. We are told to confess our sins to one another. This is not so we can gossip but rather support, encourage and hold each other accountable. We can overcome our struggles if we are humble enough to ask each other for help. Another help to overcoming sin and trouble areas of our life is to develop new positive habits. As 2019 begins, our church sits in a tremendous position to reach out into our tornado effected community. The Long-term Recovery Group will be bringing in volunteers in large numbers to help with the reconstruction. We have the opportunity to show hospitality to those who are coming and to support them as they work to help Marshalltown recover. There will be many opportunities to get involved: meals, laundry and organized events for the workers and families they serve. This next year will bring us the chance to witness to the love of God as we serve others. Please join in this mission as we reach out in Christ s love. Pastor Rich DECEMBER SESSION ACTIONS The Stated Session meeting of First Presbyterian Church, Marshalltown, met in the Lower Lounge Tuesday, December 18, 2018. Moderator Rev. Dr. Richard A. King opened the Session meeting at 7:05 p.m., and Doug Butler presented the devotions and opening prayer. A quorum was in attendance. Motion prevailed to approve the amended November 20, 2018 Stated Session minutes after changing that Bibles are given to Wednesday Club first-timers and not graduates in Rich King s report. Pastors and staff reports were presented. Finances: Matt Broshar presented the Financial reports noting that giving in November was consistent with giving the past two months. Congregants have donated from their Charitable Trusts and the Elders will vote at the January Session meeting on where this money would be used best. We have a positive cash flow. We are still getting donations in for tornado relief and for the Building Fund. We are receiving more interest money from our investments. Motion prevailed to approve $32,000 for Pastor Rich King s Housing and Utilities for 2019. 2019 Budget: Matt Broshar discussed the changes in the 2019 budget and explained why they were changed. Following much discussion, motion prevailed to approve the 2019 budget at $434,586. Mission/Evangelism: Matt Broshar reported that 47 Christmas Shoe boxes from this church were taken to Grace Church. The Local Optional Benevolence Funds will be discussed at the January Missions meeting to determine the amounts to be spent and to whom they will go to. Matt reported that the Missions Committee usually matches funds received from the Presbytery grants. Worship & Music: Communion 131 on November 4, and 132 on December 2. A new brass altar set has been ordered. The organ was tuned Nov. 27, and the piano was tuned Nov. 28. There will be carols and praise music in the Sanctuary Saturday, Dec. 22, for the Christmas Dinner for the community. Jon Rottink will preach Dec. 30. Jews for Jesus are scheduled to present here Sunday, April 7, 2019. Christian Education: Doug Bacon reported that Children s Christmas program on December 16, and Cookie Baking day went very well. Sunday school on Dec. 23, will be all ages together with 2 nd grade through High School classes to meet with the adult class, and Bryce King will give a presentation. There will be no Sunday school on Dec. 30. Plans are being made for 2019 VBS, and the materials have already been purchased. A & P: Doug Butler reported that they discussed Tornado Fund and Pastor s Discretionary Fund. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, December 31, 2018, page 6

Motion prevailed to move $6,000 from the Staffing Contingency line item into the Pastor s Discretionary Fund. Motion prevailed that the Missions and A & P Committees could approve spending up to $1,000 from the Tornado Fund when the need arises. They discussed scheduling the Session Retreat on Saturday, February 9, 2019 to include the new Elders after they are elected sometime in January. Membership & Involvement: Heather Rottink reported the committee is helping prepare food for the Wednesday night Family Night meals. There will be a meal before the Children s Christmas program. They are planning a pot-luck meal for the Annual Meeting. There is no date for the Chili Cook-off yet. The committee will start working on doing a new Church Directory. Property: Richie Ritter reported that the carpet will be laid in Fellowship Hall starting Wed., Dec. 19. Motion prevailed to put a steel roof on the church rather than shingles as there is a 50-year warranty of this roof. The cost for the metal roof will be $58,953. There is money in the Building Fund and in the Capital Improvement Fund to pay for the roof along with the insurance money. Members of the congregation will be asked to help support the cost of the metal roof, if they want to. The metal roof can be installed in cold weather. ASPEN Company will install the new roof. Nominations: Rich King reported the committee has gotten almost all the Elders and most of the Deacons for the 2021 classes. Other Business: Julie Lynch will continue as a check signer for 2019. Motion prevailed to have Pat Kremer as a check signer. The remaining check signers will be named at the January 2019 Session meeting. A sheet was passed around for Elders to sign up to do devotions at Session meetings in 2019. Pastor Rich King closed the meeting with prayer.
