Prelude The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost June 24, 2018 Announcements Light of Christ L In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L Lord of desert and rain, we enter into a time of year in which the power of storm and storming are upon us as the monsoons approach. C Your Word contains more power than any storm. L Many have experienced the sense of powerlessness in the midst of monsoon lightening and wind and flood overpowering the day. C Your Word contains more power than any storm. L We also experience storms in our own lives which seem to have more power than we ourselves can muster up to wage a fair battle: We are weakened as we are stormed upon by entities and illness more powerful than us. C Your Word contains more power than any storm. L May we truly walk in faith given to us by Your Grace that we may trust in the true power of Your Word in us, around us and through us. And when we fail to believe this as truth, have mercy on us. (Let us observe a moment of silence for reflection and self-examination.) L Most merciful God, C We confess that we have turned from You and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In Your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to You, and uphold us by Your Spirit, so that we may live and serve You in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to us the entire forgiveness of all our sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Sharing the Peace of Christ Hymn Jesus Shall Reign (1-4) 1 Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does its successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more. 2 To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head; his name like sweet perfume shall rise with ev'ry morning sacrifice. 3 People and realms of ev'ry tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song; and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

4 Blessings abound where'er he reigns: the pris'ners leap to lose their chains, the weary find eternal rest, and all who suffer want are blest. Prayer of the Day O God our defender, storms rage about us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue Your people from despair, deliver Your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us all from unbelief; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Anthem Scripture Readings Job 38:1-11 1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? 9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped? Mark 4:35-41 35 On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to them, Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Children s Message Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save (1-3) 1 Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm has bound the restless wave, who bade the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. 2 O Savior, whose almighty word the winds and waves submissive heard, who walked upon the foaming deep, and calm amid the storm didst sleep: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. 3 O Holy Spirit, who didst brood upon the chaos dark and rude, and bid its angry tumult cease, and give, for wild confusion, peace: oh, hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. The Sermon

*Apostle s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The Sharing of our Tithes and Offering *The Offertory Response *Words of Institution Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Distribution of Holy Communion All who believe in Jesus Christ as Risen Lord and Savior are welcome to partake in the meal He has prepared for you. The inner ring of white cups in the Communion tray is non-alcohol. Communion Music In The Garden I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses; And the voice I hear, Falling on my ear; The Son of God discloses. And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known. He speaks, and the sound of His voice, Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me, Within my heart is ringing. And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known. I d stay in the garden with Him Though the night around me be falling, But He bids me go Through the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling. And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known. What a Friend we Have in Jesus What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief s to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friend despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer. In His arms He ll take and shield you; You will find a solace there. Bind Us Together Bind us together Lord, bind us together with cords that can not be broken Bind us together Lord, bind us together Lord, bind us together in love. There is only one God, there is only one King There is only one Body, that is why we can sing. Bind us together Lord, bind us together with cords that can not be broken Bind us together Lord, bind us together Lord, bind us together in love. You are the family of God, You are the promise divine. You are God s chosen desire, you are the glorious new wine. Bind us together Lord, bind us together with cords that can not be broken Bind us together Lord, bind us together Lord, bind us together in love. God Is So Good God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He s so good to me. He cares for me, He cares for me, He cares for me, He cares for me. I ll do His will, I ll do His will, I ll do His will I ll do His will. He loves me so, He loves me so, He loves me so, He loves me so. Alleluia Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. (Repeat) Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus. (Repeat) My Redeemer, My Redeemer, My Redeemer. (Repeat) Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord.. (Repeat)

*Receive the Blessing P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in His grace. *Post Communion Canticle *Blessing the Congregation P Now may the Lord bless and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord look upon you in favor and give you peace. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, (+) and of the Holy Spirit. *Hymn Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer 1 Guide me ever, great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but you are mighty; hold me with your pow'rful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore, feed me now and evermore. 2 Open now the crystal fountain where the healing waters flow;

let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliv'rer, strong deliv'rer, shield me with your mighty arm, shield me with your mighty arm. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side. Songs and praises, songs and praises, I will raise forevermore, I will raise forevermore. P Go in Peace and serve the Lord. C Thanks be to God.
