There is a custom of eating fruit, and particularly fruit associated with Israel, on this day. Here are some of the laws of reciting Shehechiyanu for new fruit: One who sees a seasonal, newly available fruit, and feels great joy at seeing it, recites the berachah of Shehechiyanu. One whose personal joy is not that great should not recite Shehechiyanu. Which fruit? Fruit which is available via import all year still warrants a Shehechiyanu when it begins to grow locally and one eats it for the first time, if the local fruit is fresher or better, inducing joy. Fruit which is available during two distinct times of the year, with at least one month of non-availability between them, warrants Shehechiyanu when the fruit becomes available and its presence induces joy. One should avoid reciting Shehechiyanu on fruit produced via a prohibited cross-species graft. One does not recite Shehechiyanu on underripe fruit, even if it is somewhat edible. One does recite Shehechiyanu on cooked fruit. When? Technically, one recites Shehechiyanu even when seeing newly available fruit, but we generally recite Shehechiyanu only upon eating; this is when most people feel the greatest joy. We recite Shehechiyanu before reciting borei pri ha'eitz. One who eats many types of new fruit at the same sitting should recite one collective Shehechiyanu. Note: Tree fruit coming from Israel may require proper tithing. Please consult Rabbi Korobkin for detailed information. PARSHAS QUESTIONS BESHALACH BY: THE RAV First Aliyah: (13:17) Why does it say When Pharaoh sent out Bnei Yisrael from Egypt instead of simply, When Bnei Yisrael left Egypt? Second Aliyah: (14:10) What does lifting up of the eyes mean? Third Aliyah: (14:16) Why was it necessary for Moshe to use his staff to split the Sea? Fourth Aliyah: How exactly did Bnei Yisrael sing simultaneously and spontaneously all the same words? Fifth Aliyah: (15:27) Why is the number of wellsprings and date palms that they found in Elim relevant? Sixth Aliyah: (16:12) Why did Hashem deem it appropriate to give them quail in addition to the Manna why wasn t Manna alone sufficient? Seventh Aliyah: (17:6) Why does Hashem instruct Moshe to hit the rock when later, in Parshas Chukas, Moshe would be punished for that very same act? RENOVATION UPDATES The Jarvis Freedman Library is closed indefinitely and off limits at all times. The Brotherhood office is being converted into a Facilities office and is permanently off limits. The whole Sisterhood Lobby, adjacent washrooms, cloakroom and stairwell is now under construction. That area will be completely off limits including Shabbos. Please use cloakrooms on floors 2 & 3. UPCOMING EVENTS EVENTS AT A GLANCE DATE EVENT TIME LOCATION FRIDAY, JAN 18 Leil Limmud 8:00 PM VARIOUS LOCATIONS SATURDAY, JAN. 19 Movie: The Good Nazi - Simcha Jacobovici s new film 7:30 PM PERLIS HALL SUNDAY, JAN. 27 Tu B Shevat Event with the Shlichim 5:00 PM REBBETZIN JUDY TAUB HALL THIS MOTZEI SHABBOS BAYT is thrilled to present the North American Premiere of Simcha Jacobovici s new film, THE GOOD NAZI. Directed by Ric Esther Bienstock, the movie is based on the life of Major Karl Plagge, a member of the Nazi Party, who during World War 2 established a forced labour camp outside of the Vilna Ghetto. In the camp known as HKP 562, Plagge sought to save as many Jews as he could utilizing work permits issued on the false premise that the holders' skills were vital to the German war effort. Thanks to Major Plagge s warnings about the final round ups, 200 Jews were saved, the largest group of survivors from the Vilna Ghetto. In 1999, Dr. Michael Good, accompanied his mother Pearl, one of the survivors of Camp HKP 562, to Vilnius and Dr. Good wrote a book entitled "The Search for Major Plagge: The Nazi Who Saved Jews". Through the efforts of the Goods and that of others, Yad Vashem recognized Plagge posthumously on April 2005 as a Righteous amongst the Nations. Working with the archeologists who initially investigated the sight in 2017, Simcha and Ric Esther Bienstock created a film that had its world premiere in Vilnius in July 2018 and was described as powerful in its sensitivity as it links the testimonies of the survivors with the story of Major Plagge himself. We are proud to host the North American premiere of this unique film, of an unknown but important story of someone who took enormous risks to save over 200 Jews from certain death as the SS liquidated the Vilna Ghetto. The film is produced by Ric Esther Bienstock and directed by Ric Esther Bienstock & Yaron Niski. Executive Producers are Simcha Jacobovici and Felix Golubev. The Good Nazi was produced in Canada for VisionTV by Toronto-based Associated Producers.

We are inviting students from Elementary and Jr. High schools to join Israeli kids who take up the challenge to read English for 5 weeks. Each registered participant is encouraged to read as many books and pages as possible. According to age, grade and English level, readers strive to reach higher reading levels. The Israelis are excitedly looking forward to the prizes awaiting them at the Awards Ceremony. Some groups of Toronto readers will get together to celebrate their achievements at the end as well. Of course anyone in Israel at the time of the Awards Ceremony is more than welcome to attend! The Israeli school whose students have read the most pages is also awarded a prize of a small library of 25 books. The improvement in English and the excitement generated about reading English, a foreign language for most of the hundreds of young Israeli participants, is the true achievement of this wonderful community project. In addition to gained reading skills, Torontonians will be excited about connecting with their Israeli counterparts on this project.
