AUGUST 2017 1! A Monthly Newsletter from Heritage Presbyterian Church 2262 Rochester Road Pittsburgh, PA 15237 heritagepcusa@verizon.net 412-366-1338 www.heritagepcusa.org Facebook: HeritageChurchpcusa Youth webpage: heritagepcusayg.blogspot.com POW-WOW WITH PASTOR BRIAN As Summer rolls on we continue here at Heritage Church to do the work which God is placing before us. This time of year is a bit different though as we have come through our first Spring Stewardship season and are also in the throes of working on discerning whom God is calling to serve as Ruling Elders here at Heritage Presbyterian Church. I have written about discernment in these pages previously, but it is something which I want to keep in front of the church family as we continue to move forward into God s amazing future. Discernment is a loaded word in the church; very often indicating, depending on how the word is used, a yes or no answer to some previously held idea. In reality though the key to discernment, particularly prayerful discernment, is indifference. By this I do not mean that we should be apathetic to what God wishes us to do, but rather we should not come into the process of discernment with any prior notions or agendas of what God desires from us. Discerning whether or not to be a Ruling Elder for instance cannot be governed by our current schedules in life. We all have busy schedules these days but when it comes to discernment of how and why to be a leader in the church we should keep in mind that no one takes this journey alone. No one leads alone and no one goes it alone. We are in this together. So do yourself a favor when you are discerning how and when to be involved in church leadership that God will not expect you to be by yourself. Perhaps more importantly, discernment of God s will for the church and for our lives drives us to deeper places. Discerning people often find that what was once seen as a major issue is not one after all and that perhaps compromise is not the best solution to what ails us. Rather we are called to collaborate, and instead of holding two different positions and then trying to find one that suits all people involved, we strike out in new imaginative directions where God is sending us. So blessings to you during this summer of discernment and may God continue to do all and more in your life that you desire from Him. Blessings, PBJ

AUGUST 2017 3 Bellevue Community Meal Ministry Join us as we minister to those in need of a little companionship and conversation over a Heritage cooked meal. We will be preparing a Spaghetti and Meatballs dinner and taking it to the Community Center of Bellevue. We will serve and then eat with the diners who are in need of a warm smile, a dinner companion and a little fellowship. All you have to do is share a tiny bit of time with someone who may be lonely. We will leave from the church at 5:00 pm, set up, share a prayer, serve, and then eat with folks. Then, we clean up and leave by 7:30 pm. See Wendy Cibula or Melanie Thomson if you have any questions about this ministry of love. Sign up sheet is in Fellowship Hall. Thank you. Date: August 28 Body & Soul The women at Body & Soul have been busy over the last several months taking on projects that are benefiting our entire church. Here are some of the highlights from the wellness ministry s church-wide activities: Amy Broniszewski and her husband stopped by the church so that he could fix our moveable sign. He put new wheels on it and handles for easy moving. She said it's a little thank you to Heritage Church from Body & Soul. Amy now works part time at Body & Soul and teaches the popular Walk Live classes. Carolyn Briggs, Anne Mallampalli, and Amy headed up a Body & Soul team who wrote a grant to receive partial funding for an AED for the church. We re happy to announce we received the grant. Body & Soul is holding several fundraisers to collect money to help cover the remaining cost. Body & Soul has a collection box to gather the monthly Food Bank items as designated by the Mission and Evangelism team. Members also signed up to provide supplies for Vacation Bible School, and the ministry offered the SPIN moms a free workout while their kids were attending VBS. Our wellness ministry is offering a free CPR class this fall for all church members as well as members of the community. The training will take place September 18 at 7 pm. Registration is limited so look for the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall or talk to one of the Body & Soul team members Wendy Cibula, Carolyn, or me. Joanne Dunmyre
