The Payment of the Passover Lamb Exodus 12
All of us, regardless of status, ethnicity, achievement, religion, etc., deserve judgment and death for our sin. But in Jesus Christ, God has provided a substitute to take our judgment and death.
Exodus 12:3,5-8 Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers houses, a lamb for a household Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the @lesh that night, roasted on the @ire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it It is the LORD s Passover.
Exodus 12:21-23 Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
We all deserve judgment and death, regardless of our status, ethnicity, religion, achievements, etc.
Exodus 12:22 Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.
Romans 3:10-12,23 None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death.
The blood of a spotless lamb substituted for them and redeemed them.
Exodus 12:13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. Exodus 13:12-13 You shall set apart to the LORD all that @irst opens the womb. All the @irstborn of your animals that are males shall be the LORD s. Every @irstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb Every @irstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.
A Greater Deliverance As important as this deliverance from Egypt was, the Israelites needed a greater deliverance.! They had a problem greater than oppression, and they owed a debt greater than an animal sacri@ice could pay.! So do we.
A substitute can take the judgment and death that we deserve, and free us from sin & death: the blood of the one spotless Lamb of God.
Hebrews 10:1-4 It can never, by the same sacri@ices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins."
1 Peter 1:18-19 You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 1 Corinthians 5:7 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacri=iced.
John 1:29 The next day [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
All of us, regardless of status, ethnicity, achievement, religion, etc., deserve judgment and death for our sin. But in Jesus Christ, God has provided a substitute to take our judgment and death.
Exodus 12:14 This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.
Luke 22:15,19-20 And he said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
