Christ Presbyterian Church I have kept back nothing, but have declared to you the whole counsel of God. Acts 20:27 Covenant Renewal Service 26 March 2017

Be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent; for here we meet with a holy God. Before the service, speak to the Lord; during the service, let the Lord speak to you; after the service, speak to one another. About Receiving Communion All who trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, are baptized members in good standing of congregations that proclaim the gospel, are repentant of their sin and are at peace with their brothers and sisters in Christ are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper, feeding on the grace of God by faith. If you have not put your trust in Christ, please allow the elements to pass you by and take this opportunity to meditate on the meaning of the Gospel. A Word to Parents: Baptized children are invited to the table after they have made a profession of faith and have been received as communing members by the church to which their parents belong. As instituted by our Lord, wine is the element used in the Lord s Supper to show forth his blood shed on our behalf (Mark 14:23 25; 1 Cor 10:16; 11:20 21, 25; 1 Tim 4:3 4). If, however, for reasons of conscience, you are not able to participate using wine, grape juice is provided in the center of the tray. Also, gluten-free crackers are available for those who cannot eat bread. Nursery today: Sarah Abuhl Jack Canales Next Sunday: Laurie Boswell Avery Rooney

Reflection That which we are to transmit to our children is not only the knowledge of languages, arts and sciences, liberty and property, but especially the praises of the Lord, and his strength appearing in the wonderful works he has done. Our great care must be to lodge our religion, that great deposit, pure and entire in the hands of those that succeed us. Matthew Henry Commentary on Psalm 78

We Prepare to Meet with God Prelude Come, thou fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above; Praise the mount! I m fixed upon it, Mount of God s unchanging love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by thy help I m come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God: He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be; Let that grace now, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander Lord I feel it Prone to leave the God I love: Here s my heart; O take and seal it, Seal it for thy courts above.

God Calls Us Trinitarian Confession and Salutation Minister: We are gathered in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 People: Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth! Psalm 124:8 Minister: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! 1 Timothy 1:2b People: Amen. Call to Worship Psalm 48:1 3, 9 14 Minister: Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! People: His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Minister: Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King. People: Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress. Minister: We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. People: As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the end of the earth. Minister: Your right hand is filled with righteousness. Let Mount Zion be glad! People: Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments! Minister: Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, People: consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, Minister: that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. People: He will guide us forever.

Hymn 9 All You That Fear Jehovah s Name Trinity Hymnal Prayer of Petition and Adoration God Cleanses Us Call to Confession of Sin Proverbs 1:7 9 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Hear, my son, your father s instruction, and forsake not your mother s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. Corporate Confession of Sin and Supplication for Mercy (unison) Heavenly Father, God of all wisdom, we bow before you acknowledging that we are sinners, and that in our sins we have acted like fools, despising wisdom and instruction. We have been enticed by the world and deceived by our own sinful desires. We have preferred our paltry knowledge to the infinite, life-changing wisdom of your gospel. We have failed both to heed and to impart godly teaching. We have failed to remember and to be thankful for your covenant with your people, sealed with the precious blood of your Son. Forgive us, we pray, grant us repentance, and renew our minds by your Holy Spirit, that we may proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Declaration of Forgiveness Acts 2:37 39 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brothers, what shall we do? And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself. The Doxology (#731) Trinity Hymnal

God Consecrates Us Prayer for Illumination Reading of Scripture Exodus 12:21 27 (p. 54) 21 Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. 24 You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever. 25 And when you come to the land that the LORD will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service. 26 And when your children say to you, What do you mean by this service? 27 you shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD s Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses. And the people bowed their heads and worshiped. Joshua 4:19 24 (p. 180) 19 The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. 20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, When your children ask their fathers in times to come, What do these stones mean? 22 then you shall let your children know, Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground. 23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever. Hymn 364 Let Children Hear the Mighty Deeds Trinity Hymnal

Preaching of the Word Sermon Text: Psalm 78:1 8 (p. 488) Rev. John Canales Tell the Children Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! 2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, 3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 5 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, 6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, 7 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; 8 and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. Prayer of Intercession Hymn 463 A Debtor to Mercy Alone Trinity Hymnal (CPC Tune)

God Communes with Us Affirmation of Faith: Apostles Creed The Gloria Patri (#735) p. 845, Trinity Hymnal Trinity Hymnal The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Invitation and Supervision of the Table 1 Corinthians 11:23 29 Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration The minister will lead the congregation in prayer, concluding with the Lord s Prayer in unison: People: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Words of Institution Matt 26:26 28; Mk 14:22 24; Lk 22:17 20 Distribution of the Bread and the Cup

Hymn During the bread Bread of the World in Mercy Broken Bread of the world in mercy broken, Wine of the soul in mercy shed, by whom the words of life were spoken, and in whose death our sins are dead, Look on the heart by sorrow broken; look on the tears by sinners shed; so may your feast become the token that by your grace our souls are fed. Scripture Reading During the cup Hebrews 12:18 24 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. For they could not endure the order that was given, If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned. Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, I tremble with fear. But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon) Now may your servant, Lord, according to your word, depart in exultation. My rest shall be serene, for now my eyes have seen your wonderful salvation. You did for all prepare this Gift, so great, so rare, fulfilling prophets story; A Light to show the way to Gentiles gone astray, and unto Israel s glory. Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication
