THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 22, 2017 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN OF INVOCATION When Streaming from the Eastern Skies TLH 543 1. When, streaming from the eastern skies, The morning light salutes mine eyes, O Sun of Righteousness Divine, On me with beams of mercy shine; Chase the dark clouds of sin away And turn my darkness into day. 2. When to heav n s great and glorious King My morning sacrifice I bring And, grieving o er my guilt and shame, Ask mercy, Savior, in Thy name, My conscience sprinkle with Thy blood And be my Advocate with God. 3. And at my life s last setting sun, My conflict o er, my labor done, Jesus, Your heav nly radiance shed To cheer and bless my dying bed And from death s gloom my spirit raise To see Thy face and sing Thy praise. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. L: I rejoiced with those who said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. C: Our feet are standing in Your gates, O Jerusalem. L: I will bow down toward Your holy temple and will praise Your name for Your love and Your faithfulness. C: For You are exalted above all things. L: O Almighty God, merciful Father, C: Holy are You, O Lord. L: Most merciful God, heavenly Father, C: We humbly confess that we are sinners. We fear standing before You, because our sin has made us unworthy of You. But we acknowledge what Your grace has accomplished for us, through Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In His name we confess our sins. We look toward the promise of forgiveness, won for us by His sacrifice, on the cross. Make us new. Cleanse us from sin and its guilt. Show us how to love and serve You, now and forevermore. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION C: Amen. *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Taken from Lutheran Service Book pp. 187-189 (8:00) Glory be to God on high, And on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

*THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. C: Amen. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the third Sunday after Epiphany is from Isaiah 9:1-3, page 573: 1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE is from 1 Corinthians 1:10, 13-17, page 952: 10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourth chapter, verses 12-23, page 809: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles 16 the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned." 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. 23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
