Biographical/Historical Note George B. Marshall was a sugar and cotton planter of Crescent Plantation, Cheneyville, Rapides Parish. He married Margaret Dawson Cureton, daughter of William H. and Mary B. Cureton, early settlers of Rapides Parish. During the Civil War, George B. Marshall served as Captain of Company C, First Battalion, Louisiana State Cavalry. Scope and Content Note Legal papers make up a large part of this collection and concern land sales and transfers, mortgages, and sales of slaves. Also within the collection are financial documents, including various accounts, receipts, and balance sheets, most of which pertain to cotton sales. Military papers include a letter from Reuben Kemper communicating the death of his son who died after fighting in the Battle of New Orleans (1815) and Civil War documents such as two muster rolls (March 20, 1863 and August 31, 1863) and George Marshall s military appointment to Captain (1863). Printed items include an Index to the sixth volume of the Extra Globe (1841) and clippings from The Weekly Times-Democrat (April 10, 1891 and February 26, 1892). The collection contains three daybooks and two record books for Crescent Plantation. Record books from the Reconstruction period contain contracts and accounts for tenant farmers and laborers, and a daybook records accounts with a blacksmith, possibly a slave. Page 4 of 7

Series Descriptions [The collection is arranged chronologically, but like items are described in groups below. See the Container List for description reflecting physical arrangement] Series I, Legal and Financial Papers, 1807-1900 Legal papers make up a large part of this collection; they concern land sales and transfers, mortgages, and sales of slaves. The earliest items pertain to the estate of Henry Dawson and the division of his property (1807), while subsequent items document the transfers of tracts of land in Rapides Parish (1818-1832). Also included is a plat of land near Bayou Boeuf belonging to Josias Chambers (1818), a pre-emption claim by Joseph Tanner, a form of a stockholders oath, and letters to John Hagan from E.F. Briggs discussing various properties (1832). Mortgages of William H. Cureton (1833) and sales of land to Mary B. Cureton (1848-1849) are included, as are sales of slaves, consisting of contracts between George B. Marshall and John B. Smith as well as between Marshall and Alexander Hagan (1855). Other legal documents include a partnership of Mrs. M.R. Johnson with George B. Marshall and his wife, Margaret Dawson Marshall (1857), and an agreement of Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Marshall with Mrs. M.B. Ford (1857). Financial papers include various accounts, receipts, and balance sheets, many of which involve cotton sales. Letters to Mrs. M.B. Cureton concern sales of cotton (1848-1853), as do lists from Cammack & Ringgard (1841). Tax receipts (1862-1900) as well as a file of bankruptcy for G.B. Marshall (1869) are also included. Series II, Military Papers, 1815, 1863 A letter from Reuben Kemper to John Dawson communicates the death of his son Willis Dawson who died of pleurisy after fighting in the Battle of New Orleans (February 3, 1815). Civil War documents include two muster rolls from Company C, First Battalion, Louisiana State Cavalry (March 20, 1863 and August 31, 1863) and George Marshall s military appointment to Captain (1863). Series III, Printed items, 1841-1892 Printed items include an Index to the sixth volume of the Extra Globe (1841) and clippings from The Weekly Times-Democrat (April 10, 1891 and February 26, 1892). Series IV, Volumes, 1854-1893 The collection contains three daybooks and two record books for Crescent Plantation. One daybook, 1855-1863, contains accounts for members of the family and neighbors for work done by a blacksmith, possibly a slave. Record books during the Reconstruction period contain store accounts and contracts with tenant farmers and laborers. An entry for 1866 records fines imposed on African-Americans for breaking the peace. These fines were set by an arbitration group composed of African-Americans.
