Winter 2017 Helping to to conserve conserve the the fabric fabric and and treasures treasures of of St St Laurence s Laurence s Day Conference on the Monuments In June 2016, the Ludlow held a most successful conference on St Laurence s stained glass. Planned jointly with the York Glaziers Trust, it attracted 100 participants who thoroughly appreciated the range of subjects covered and the quality of the speakers. This year it is the turn to focus on the monuments in the church. Called Memorials in the Marches, the day will be presented jointly with the Church Monuments Society. Again, the speakers are leaders in their field. St Laurence s most impressive monuments relate to members of the Council of the Marches and there are 3 lectures focusing on these monuments. As background to these talks, Nia Powell of Bangor University will provide an overview of the Council of the Marches and comment on its significance to the Welsh people. Sally Badham MBE will speak on the incised slabs in the south transept and parvise room. Finally, Dr Holly Trusted of the V & A will focus on the Salwey monument, setting it in the context of other 18th century sculpture. Letter from the Chair Helping to conserve the fabric and treasures of St Laurence s are the modern-day successors to the medieval Guild. For over 350 years until 1551 the medieval supported St Laurence s through gifts and legacies, as well as providing teachers for the town s grammar school. Following in their footsteps, the modern-day Ludlow continue to provide support and grants to maintain the fabric and treasures of this historic building. After nearly 150 years of neglect, today St Laurence s faces a significant backlog of fabric repairs and urgent conservation of its medieval stained glass and woodwork. are currently in the midst of raising 12,000 to fund much-needed restoration of Tudor woodwork in St John s chapel the chapel. We would like to commission work to begin as soon as possible, but still need to raise 1,500 towards the cost of this project. We need your help. Please make a donation (see form on page 7). are planning a number of social, educational and fund-raising events over the next few months, including a conference on St Laurence s monuments, the Talk & Tea series, a quiz night, and gala fund-raiser at Broadward Hall featuring Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch Kt. Help Us to Reach Helping Our to Goal conserve Join the fabric the and Ludlow treasures of St Laurence s We are still 1,500 short of our goal of raising 12,000 to save fragile Tudor and Georgian woodwork in St John s Chapel the Chapel. Can you help? A 20 donation becomes 45 through a matching grant and Gift Aid. St John s Chapel Tudor (c.1500) linenfold panelling. St Laurence s church is a gem of a building a bequest to us from those who in the 1400s elevated it to rank among the greatest churches in England, a position that it still holds today. They were called, members of the Ludlow Guild who, by gifts in their lifetime and in their wills, created much of what we see around us today the towering columns and arches, the rare stained glass, the carvings in stone and wood and the treasures of art. Will you join us? Will you become a Ludlow Palmer? We have one advantage over our predecessors six centuries ago. For every charitable gift made by a Ludlow Palmer who pays tax in the UK, the government adds 25% through Gift Aid at no extra cost to the donor. Legacies made in wills are exempt from taxation and can reduce inheritance tax. To become a Ludlow Palmer now, see page 7 of this newsletter. Page 3

Page 4 The First Ten Years and Importance of Legacies It is now 10 years since the Conservation Trust was established by the amalgamation of the Fabric Trust and the Friends of St Laurence. Over this period, the Conservation Trust has had an income of slightly more than 500,000, the bulk of which has been spent on roof and pinnacle repairs and other important fabric conservation projects. Income has come from three sources: 200,000 in direct donations; 140,000 from fund-raising events, sales, interest and gift aid; and 168,000 from just six legacies.

Ludlow have already demonstrated their love of this church and desire to ensure that it is cared for. But conserving a building like this presents a huge ongoing challenge. Imagine the difference a gift in your will could make. It is a simple step that you can accomplish now. And it could be deeply satisfying to know that you will be helping to safeguard the future of this precious part of our heritage. As the Conservation Trust is a charity run by committed local people, you can be certain that your gift to the Trust will be used effectively. Over the past 10 years, nearly 90% of the Trust s income has been spent directly on conservation projects. If you would like to discuss a legacy with the Trust, please tick the box on page 7 and return the slip. Page 5
