Bakersfield Council No. 28 Officer s for Cryptic Year 2019 It appears that smiling guy on the left has more pins than Brady has Superbowl s rings. If rumors are true and in his case the rumors are probably true, he has sat in more seats as Master, High Priest, Illustrious Master, Commander than the entire Grand Line of Royal Arch Masons, Grand Line of Cryptic Masons, Grand Line of Knights Templar in total. I also have it on good Authority from an anonymous source that the mileage traveling from Lodge, Chapter, Council, Commandery is more than the Grand Lines. More Happenings at King Solomon Council No. 29 Fraternal greetings Companions, I would like to congratulate all of our new Illustrious Masters & their officers. May you all have a successful 2019 Cryptic year. It takes a team effort and a group of good brothers to make any of our endeavors successful. As I've attended, and been part of, installations in the North, I've heard a great deal of renewing our passions for the CMMRF or other programs that will help bring our member's back to the council meetings. A lot of great ideas and time have been put into these plans that Councils have adopted as this year's priorities. While at King Solomon Council No. 29 in Vallejo, Most Illustrious Bill Dann installed Illustrious Master Sam Maffei and his officer's for the 2019 Cryptic year. There was an all-star cast of Installing Officers; the other two being MIPGM Bob Whitfield as Installing Marshal & Installing Chaplain was MIPGM Martin McKeay. Although it was a great event, all in attendance found out some rather sad news. Illustrious Companion, Henry "Hank" Clayton had passed away. He served in our Grand Council line for a time. But we also had the wife of MIPGM Dick Williams, Mrs. Judy Williams in attendance. She is also the Masonic Mother of MIGM Bill Dann. She informed us that her husband, Dick Williamson, is now in a care home. I ask all the companions across the state to please continue to reach out to our Companions who have served before us to see how they are doing. Set up those outreach committees because it's always great to receive a phone call even if certain companions can no longer attend due to age or health. We had the opportunity to visit MIPGM Dick Williams at the care home the following day. I know Mrs. Judy was extremely happy that we were able to visit with Dick even though he could not talk with us. He had his moments when he would recognize us with a squeeze of the hand or that look in his eyes. He is being well cared for by the home and, of course, his loving wife Judy. Sincerely yours, Efren Prado Grand Marshal of the North Sword & Trowel February 2019 Volume 6 No. 09 Page 17

Editor Notes And now let s talk about the York Rite Men s Club, where we dress up, maybe, sometimes, once a month to attend a gathering in which our major accomplishment is. I was once told by an Inspector, whom I greatly admire and is a Past Grand High Priest, our Ritual makes us a Mason. Well, I agree plus, Ritual and our Community Activities. In another discussion with a Past Grand High Priest, I was asked how many of us, in the Grand Line, are qualified? My honest answer, I did not think you had to qualify for a York Rite Grand Line with the exception of being a Past High Priest, Illustrious Past Master, or Past Commander. I was told that is true, but question restated, how many of us qualified for the position of High Priest and are now in the Grand Line? He went on the state not a single person in the current Grand Line qualified as High Priest. I have read some Grand High minutes where Grand Lectures have stated if you cannot open or close without a book, your charter should be turned in. These Degrees and Orders were written before some of us were born and honestly we should respect them. How many of us can honestly state, I qualified to Open and Close a convocation of Royal Arch Masons, an Assembly of Cryptic Masons, and a Conclave of Knights Templar? We are now a men s club, we give awards out for attendance, we may call them different names, but in reality, the awards are for attendance. Solution, let s roll out Ritual and Community Activities. These are two important activities, learn our Ritual and let s work with our Blue Lodge and become active. Active in our Community or maybe closer to home, aiding our Widows, calling our Widows, both Blue lodge and our York Rite Body-see if they need a sprinkler fixed. Maybe we can begin a Food Bank ; a Community Thanksgiving Dinner; Community Christmas Dinner; or let s work with a local Church or a local Food Bank and support their activities. Let s become active in our Community. Grand Marshal of the North, Efren has a great idea and let s expand on the brilliant, marvelous, idea. Not only would those served in our Grand Line love a call and/or visit but so would the widows of our Councils. Sword & Trowel February 2019 Volume 6 No. 09 Page 19

Humour Since this Newsletter is serious all the time and we are not allowed to talk about Religion or Politics the decision was to incorporate a little Marine Sexism. You may or may not want your wife to read this Marine joke. As we get older, we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world. It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other seniors who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither. Harold Schlumberg is an example of such a Person...an exemplary inspiration to all of us older folks. HERE IS A QUOTE FROM HAROLD: "I've often been asked,...'what do you old folks do now that you're retired?' Well, I stay active and happy. I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer and scotch into urine. Then I take a jog out to the shed to rid myself of the first batch on a picture of my favorite politicians. I do this several times every day. I really enjoy it and I get my exercise too!" Bill This one is for all the Officers, since I was a PFC (Army Intelligence) A U.S. Marine Colonel was about to start the morning briefing to his staff. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish brewing, the colonel decided to pose a question to all assembled. He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep. He posed the question of just how much of sex was "work" and how much of it was "pleasure?" A Major chimed in with 75%-25% in favor of work. A Captain said it was 50%-50%. A Lieutenant responded with 25%-75% in favor of pleasure, depending upon his state of inebriation at the time. There being no consensus, the colonel turned to the PFC who was in charge of making the coffee and asked for his opinion? Without any hesitation, the young PFC responded, "Sir, it has to be 100% pleasure. The colonel was surprised and as you might guess, asked why? "Well, sir, if there was too much work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them." The room fell silent. God Bless the enlisted man. Sword & Trowel February 2019 Volume 6 No. 09 Page 21
