JANUARY-MARCH 2018 When he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it. Luke 19:41 Our annual Mission Conference, Global Impact Celebration: A Heart for the Harvest, is coming March 4-8! Missionaries who serve all over the globe will join us for a week of renewed focus on global missions. We will have two dynamic speakers, including Walker Moore from Awe Star Ministries who was with us last year. We will gather together for a unique opportunity to fellowship with those who serve in Chattanooga and at the ends of the earth. We hope you will hope you will make plans to join us for this extraordinary week in the life of our church, as we develop and strengthen our hearts for the nations. As we enter the new year, we ask you to join us in prayer as we continue to prepare for the missions conference and work towards our 2018 mission goals. We also ask you to pray specifically for the Lord s guidance as we seek to expand our Missions Ministry by building new mission partnerships around the world. 9:30 AM On-Campus Small Groups Kingdom Kids Event 10:45 AM Morning Worship Celebration 12:30 PM Small Group Lunch with World Partners (off-campus) 6:00 PM 10:30 AM In-Home World Briefings Senior Adult Luncheon 6:30 PM Mission Fair (for all ages) 5:30 PM Church Family Supper 6:30 PM Commitment Service

So Walk In Him People in the fitness industry love January. Memberships double. Gyms and fitness centers are packed the first few weeks of January with those attempting to make good on their New Year s resolutions to lose weight or get in shape. We look in the mirror and say, Where did that come from? and then we try to do something about it. I m sure the regulars get frustrated with the crowds, but if history is any indicator, they know that come February it will start to thin out. Be sure to join us at 10:45 am on Sunday, January 7, for our regular worship gathering as Pastor Troy preaches the vision message for 2018. We anticipate God will do MORE in us and through us this year! Attention Small Group Leaders! Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend our 2018 Leader Training. Training will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following our regular worship service on Sunday, January 28. Lunch is provided. For more information, please contact Pastor Wade Casey (wade@lookoutvalley.org). Many times that s the way it is with people and their spiritual lives. They will make a conscious decision, I need to get back in church. That can happen as a New Year s resolution, but most often it happens when crisis comes into their lives when they look in the spiritual mirror and say, Where did that come from? And so they make a commitment to come to church, they attend for a while, but then you don t see them again until another crisis comes along. So what s the answer to the roller coaster spiritual life? This is where the analogy breaks down. Most people who consistently work out and stay in shape are what I could call highly disciplined people. These are the people that get up when the alarm clock goes off the first time and don t hit the snooze button! They can watch what they eat and work out consistently. The problem is, that doesn t work in the spiritual life. Spiritual growth does not happen by your own power, strength, will, determination, or selfdiscipline. Spiritual growth is a work of the Spirit where you must first admit, I can t do it. So where does the strength come from? Paul told Timothy these words in 2 Timothy 2:1, You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Spiritual strength comes from grace. It comes from the gospel. What does that mean exactly? My strength to follow Christ comes from the fact that all of my failures, shortcomings, and sins were paid in full by Jesus Christ on the cross. That s the grace that Paul is talking about. My past, my present, and even the sins I have yet to commit are all paid for in the cross of Christ. But that s only one piece. The second piece is that, in the cross of Christ, through the Holy Spirit, I have been given all that I need today to be all that God has asked me to be today. God has not asked more of me today than what He s empowered me to walk in. So He hasn t commanded me to love my wife in certain ways, to love my children in certain ways, to handle my money in certain ways, to walk with men in certain ways, and then says, Good luck with that. He empowers and never asks more of me than what I can sustain by His grace. That s why Paul also said in Colossians 2:6, Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk with Him.

God has a purpose for us on this earth. That calling is to be on mission for God where He has placed us. And since many people spend the majority of their working hours on the job, we have to stop compartmentalizing life into spiritual activities. How are we living examples of the gospel while we work? You re invited to the 2018 Work as Worship Retreat, where eleven influential business leaders and pastors will discuss what it looks like to connect faith and work. Taking place as a 1-Day Local Church Retreat, the live event in Dallas will be webstreamed to over 2,000 churches around the world. Join Patrick Lencioni (Author, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team), Joel Manby (CEO, SeaWorld), Phil Vischer (Creator, VeggieTales and Jellyfish Labs), Wendy Davidson (President, US Specialty Channels Kellogg Company), Matt Chandler (Lead Pastor, The Village Church), and others in a day filled with real-life stories, biblical teaching, and practical wisdom that will equip believers in the marketplace to see their work as an opportunity to care for their families, fulfill their calling, and bring glory to God.
