Paul Meets Jesus (Based on Acts 9:1 30) (When we first meet Paul in the Bible, he is called Saul. Jesus later began calling him Paul.) Saul was a Jewish religious leader who was convinced that people who believed in Jesus were believing a lie. He decided to do everything he could to stop Jesus followers from influencing other people. He became well known among Christians as he constantly threatened them, chased them down, and had them arrested, even killed, just for trusting in Jesus! He mostly persecuted Christians in and around Jerusalem. Then he got permission from the Jewish high priest to take his campaign to the town of Damascus, where he planned to track down Christians and take them to Jerusalem to be punished. Saul took some men and set out along the road to Damascus. Suddenly, a blinding light from heaven flashed around him. Saul fell to the ground in fear. He heard a voice say, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Who are you, Lord? Saul asked. He knew the voice was not the voice of another person. It was supernatural. In fact, later he wrote that he had seen not only a bright light, but Jesus Himself. (1 Corinthians 9:1) The men with him heard the sound, but did not see what he saw. They had no idea what was going on! Jesus answered Saul s question: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Then He told Saul to get up and go into the city of Damascus and he would be told what to do. Saul stood up, but he could not see anything he was blind. The men had to lead him by the hand into the city where for three days he remained blind, not eating or drinking anything. While Saul was waiting to be told what to do next, a man named Ananias in another part of town had a vision. God told him where to find Saul, then instructed Ananias to go and place his hands on him to give him back his sight. Ananias had heard what a dangerous man Saul was. He knew Saul had come to Damascus to persecute Christians like him. God did not promise Ananias that Saul would not harm him; He simply told him that He had chosen Saul for a special job. Ananias trusted God and went off to do what he was told. Ananias entered the house where Saul was staying and placed his hands on him. Brother Saul, he said, Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately, Saul s eyes cleared and he could see again. Saul was a changed man. The first thing he did when he could see again was to get baptized. He stayed in Damascus for several days, talking and visiting with the Christians there. Instead of persecuting Christians, Saul began preaching about Jesus. People were amazed at the difference in him. Some Jews hated to hear him preaching about Jesus, so they plotted to kill him. Saul found out about the plot and his new Christian friends helped him escape from the city one night by lowering him down the wall in a large basket. Saul went to Jerusalem and tried to join Jesus followers there, but they were afraid of him, suspecting that he might only be pretending to be a Christian in order to trap them. Barnabas, however, believed Saul was a changed man. He took him to Jesus disciples, and Saul told them about meeting Jesus. After that, the word went out among Christians that Saul was a friend and could be trusted. Saul spent his time learning about Jesus and telling everyone how Jesus had changed him. #7069 Bible Stories & Activities: Paul 6 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.
