August 30, 2015 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Message from the Administrator Dear Friends, Welcome to the last full week of summer vacation! Labor Day weekend is next weekend, and a new school year will begin for many of our parishioners. Please remember that at all Masses next weekend we will be having a blessing of school bags (and the students who carry them). Any student attending any school at any level is invited to come to Mass next weekend with a school bag to participate in this special blessing. We pray that the new school year will be filled with many graces and blessings for the young (and not so young) students in our community. Our pastor departs this week for his pilgrimage to Sordevolo to witness the Passion Play and to visit some other holy sites in Italy. Let us keep Bishop Chappetto and all the pilgrims in our prayers, that they may have safe travels and be richly blessed through the experience of the pilgrimage. There is another important pilgrim to keep in our prayers over the next few weeks Pope Francis will make his first apostolic journey to the US next month, so we keep the success of his journey in our prayers, too. His visit to New York will be very brief, and access to any of the events will be very limited. We have heard nothing of tickets being made available for any of the Papal events, so I presume that none will be provided to the parishes of our diocese. Of course, if that changes we will let you know immediately of any possible access to events during the Pope s visit. Thankfully, there will be access to all of the Papal Visit on both Catholic and secular media, so you should be able to follow Pope Francis by means of television, radio, newspapers and on the Internet. (In all honesty, the comfort of your couch at home will likely be the best seat even if tickets do become available!) I believe by now I have most of the information updated on the parish calendar for the coming year. I would ask the various heads of societies and organizations to verify the information and inform me immediately of any changes or corrections. I thank you in advance for your help in keeping the calendar accurate and up-to-date. Sincerely yours in Christ, Reverend John J. Page 5 www.stkevinflushing.org August 30, 2015 Tradition Tradition is long human memory set, not in stone, but in human interaction. Without this active memory, the bonds of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Communities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After participating in events, celebrations, and even small rituals, we remark about how good it is to gather and remember. Today s readings remind us of foundations laid deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about God s will to relate to us to be our God as we are called to be God s own beloved people. Today in three readings and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that create us as a people and the obligation and responsibility that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine. I am yours. These are God s words that created a people as surely as Let there be light created the sun and moon and all the stars. Humbly welcome the word that has been placed in you and able to save your souls. James 1:21 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors Have you considered and prayed about serving St. Kevin parish as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion or Lector? August 30, 2015 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 6 Stewardship Thought In the reading from the letter of St. James, we are urged to be doers of the Gospel, not just listeners. Being a steward of God s Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will take any car, truck or van, running or not, and donate $50 to $100 per vehicle to St. Kevin Church. St. Kevin Parish Evangelization Committee Answering the USCCB Bishops invitation to form an evangelization committee in the parish, Bishop Chappetto has asked us to form a committee to deepen the understanding of the New Evangelization. A few years ago a group of parishioners, men and women, had responded to our bulletin invitations and met a few times. It is time to re-kindle the interest and to really become an Evangelizing Parish of the Gospel of Joy. The New Evangelization calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls all Catholics to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. In a special way, the New Evangelization is focused on 're-proposing' the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith. (from United States Bishops document on New Evangelization.) We invite interested parishioners to join us for an initial meeting on Saturday, September 12 after the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Pro Sanctity Center (convent). If you are interested please call Agnes Rus at 718/357-5317 or leave your name at the rectory 718/357-8888.
