Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES June 28 - July 4, 2014 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY G. RAMANATHAN - 6 Somewhat interestingly, there are some discrepancies in the credits of songs composed by G Ramanathan in the films of 1940s. For example, in the stunning box office bumper hit Haridas which created a record for running continuously for 114 weeks in a single cinema, Broadway Talkies in Madras, according to some sources, Ramanathan composed the music whereas,in the songbook, the music as well as lyrics are credited to the cult figure and icon of film music, the legendary Papanasam Sivan. (This writer as part of his research for writing this article viewed the full print of the movie and the credit titles do not mention Ramanathan anywhere. The music is attributed to Papanasam Sivan and there is no credit given for orchestra players as they did in those days in some movies.) Sivakavi, another box office hit of Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, had many songs which became the immortal melodies and some sources attribute music composing to Ramanathan whereas, in the credit titles, only Papanasam Sivan s name appears and there is no mention of G Ramanathan even in the songbook. The noted violin player who later became a master of his instrument in the world of Classical Carnatic Music, V. Govindasami Naicker, told this writer in a long chat years ago that Papanasam Sivan invariably suggested the tune of the song also while writing the lyrics. Ramanathan only composed the background orchestration of the songs. During that period Govindasami Naicker, not yeta big name in Classical Carnatic Music world, used to play the violin for movies and his name appears as the violin player in many movies. (This writer knew Govindasami Naicker well during the 1960s and laterand, for a while, Naicker taught Carnatic Music to two of his aunts in Mylapore. An excellent conversationalist with a fine sense of humour he narrated many events in his life in movies and later the Kutcheri circuit. Some of which sadly are unprintable even in this permissive period!) There is another interesting point about the songs in movies in Tamil and other South Indian languages in those days. Until about the 1950s, there was no system of tape recording of songs (or what is known as prerecording of the movie songs in a sound recording studio sung by the artist and the orchestra accompanying him). When the film was shot, the song would be played on the playback machine and the artistes on the screen would move their lips in consonance with the words and the tune. Before the system came into force, a song was sung twice - in the film while it was shot and later again in a recording theatre with a different set of orchestra. The orchestra invariably was that of HMV, Columbia. Twins,or some such firms had their own orchestra players and conductors, and the movie music composer only had a watching brief, as the lawyers say. If one listensand watches the songs in the films of the 1940s. and later listens to the gramophone record, one will find that the orchestration is different between the twoand the style of singing varying considerably. For example, in the immortal song Manmadha leelaiyai vendrar undo in the super hit Haridas (1944) Bhagavathar singing on the screen is totally different from his singing for the gramophone recordand the orchestration, of course, is entirely different. Thus the background score in the gramophone record is absent on the screen an interesting example of the two systems prevailing during those days. Ramanathan has gone on record that he scored the music for Haridas though the credit titles do not carry his name in any capacity. 1944 witnessed G Ramanathan moving ahead as music composer with the box office hit Jagathalaprathapan Encouraged by the success of Aryamala and Sivakavi, K. S. Narayana Iyengar and S. M. Sriramulu Naidu launched their next production under the Pakshiraja Films banner at Central Studios, titled Jagathalaprathapan. Popularly known as a 12 Ministers Tale, the folk tale was all about a prince (P. U. Chinnappa) who incurs the wrath of his father (P. B. Rangachari) when he expresses his heartfelt desire to spend his life in the company of four angelic women, Indrani (M.S. Sarojini), Nagakumari (U. R. Jeevaratnam), Agnikumari (S. Varalakshmi), and Varunakumari (T. A Jayalakshmi), princesses of Indraloka, Nagaloka, Agniloka, and Varunaloka respectively! Police rescue old woman abandoned outside temple By Our Staff Reporter A sick old woman lying without care on the pavement near Ayyappan Temple, Ponammbalam Salai, K. K. Nagar, for several days was rescued by police personnel belonging to R7 KK Nagar Police Station. The woman who was not very coherent told the police that her name was Parvathi and she was 60 years. G. Chandru (Inspector) said that she was probably abandoned by her family outside the temple. She had been living on alms and food given to her by temple devotees and passersby. As her health deteriorated, she could not even get up and some unidentified person informed her plight to us over the phone, he said. She was later handed over to Karuna Sagar, a trust for palliative care patients in T. Nagar. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Transgender menace in T. Nagar Sir, I am a regular reader of Mambalam Times and I thank you for highlighting regularly the various issues faced by the average citizen in the neighbourhood. I want to bring to the kind attention of the authorities a problem that is sprouting in T. Nagar for the past year or so. At several public places like bus stops, share auto points and even in residential places in T. Nagar and Mambalam, transgender prostitutes solicit customers openly. It causes a huge nuisance and embarrassment to the general public (especially women) and the residents living in and around the area. They start their work as early as 8 p.m when the public places are crowded with office goers returning home after work. They also harass pedestrians, shop keepers and motorists and demand money. The transgender persons work in groups and the cops most of the time turn a blind eye to them. Some of the locations that these transgendered haunt include Nair Road (near the intersection of Venkatraman Street) and G.N. Chetty Road (near the intersections of Valmiki Street, North Crescent Road and Giri Road). I request the authorities to look into this matter and take suitable action against these offenders. State Consumer Forum orders travel portal to refund advance paid by aggrieved customer Quashing the order of the District Forum, the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed Make My Trip India Pvt. Ltd. (an online travel portal) to return Rs. 90,000 to a senior citizen from T. Nagar who had paid the money as advance for booking a European package tour through it. S. Nagarajan, the customer, had paid the advance in two installments, on June 15 and June 30, 2010. However, on July 27, 2010, Nagarajan had to cancel the package as he could not get visas for the tour. The company refused to return the advance saying it had spent the money for booking hotels for the trip but it refused to show him any proof of the booking. Nagarajan then moved the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (North) in Jan. 2011 seeking return of the advance along with compensation for deficiency in service. The Forum after hearing the case passed orders against Nagarajan in July 2011. The same year, he filed an appeal in the State Consumer Commission against the order. The State Forum contended that according to the terms of the package, the operator can book rooms only after the client obtains the visa and confirms the dates of travel. In its order, the State Forum said there was negligence and deficiency in service on part of the company and ordered it to return the advance of Rs. 90,000 along with a compensation of 7,000 for mental agony and legal expenses.
