On the other hand, relationships that depend solely on human connection sometimes falter and cause great pain to their participants. You are a congregation of relationships forged during the past few months on the anvil of Holy Spirit with grace and grit, with humility and hope, with faith and future. As the guest among you all, I see this most active in the Session where the attitudes have shifted from carrying all the burdens of the congregation as workhorses into embracing the fine arts of coordinating congregational life with vision and daring. The Session presents bold new ideas for congregational life as you move forward with a new pastor into a new era of being. That report follows mine in this Crook. Yes, it is a different way of doing things. No, nobody has thrown out being Presbyterian. Yes, it recognizes the need for many persons to step to the plate in this congregation and deal with some portion of the need for a while. No, it doesn't mean doing things 'the way they've always been done'. Yes, it means living in the current day at the current cultural pace and living dependent upon Holy Spirit's work. Yes, it will build upon the gifts you offer this congregation as you fill out the survey ( you did either go online or pick up and return a print copy, didn't you?) This is an exciting time for a new pastor to enter the life of this congregation, bringing energy and commitment to continue moving into tomorrow. The best surprise of all will be that while Holy Spirit is pushing you into new days, Holy Spirit is also waiting for you to step up and share the burdens! May it be so, Edie 1

Report to Congregation re Session Organization and By Laws Session, after several months of discussion, will propose to the next congregational meeting in April / May some changes in procedures for the congregation. You will receive the proper notice of the Bylaw Changes involved and have time to think about them before you vote. Active Elders Terms The terms for active elders would change back to beginning upon election in January and ending a year later instead of the current terms of July 1 June 30. The Annual Congregational Meeting will continue to be in January for the purpose of presenting reports and the approved budget, electing elders, electing congregation members to the Audit and Nominating Committees, and voting on the pastor s terms of call followed by the meeting of the Corporation. By changing the terms for the elders, they will now serve the same period that their reports cover. Session Organization and Responsibilities The most important change is a reorganization of how session does its work so that the Session's activity in all areas of church life will be more of coordinating role than actually doing all the work. The Session shall consist of a minimum of nine elders divided into three classes of election. A nine member session is more appropriate and more common for congregations the size of this one. Committees shall be replaced by working groups. Our rationale for using 'working groups' is the implication that these are clusters of congregational members with the purpose of achieving specific tasks under the co-ordination of an elder. The emphasis is on having things happen, whereas the old committee nomenclature implies meeting and talking with possibly less action and accomplishment. The Session shall coordinate congregational life by having one or two elders serve as coordinators of the working groups. Each group would have one or more members of the congregation serving on it. Elders are expected to be coordinators of the activities, not the sole doer of any activity. Coordinating elders would bring a monthly report to the session from the following work groups: Christian Education overseeing all children and adult education events Communications overseeing newsletter, outdoor signs, website, directory, bulletin boards, and welcoming activities Facilities and Property overseeing maintenance of the building and grounds to support our ministries. Finance overseeing the financial stewardship to support our church ministries. Koinonia new working group with the following jobs: Connecting with members of the congregation Fellowship Time following worship Special Events: funeral receptions, special activities inviting the whole congregation Mission oversees and coordinates mission projects benefiting the local, national and international communities Personnel interviews and hires staff and conducts reviews Worship and Music oversees all worship and music by working with the Pastor to create meaningful worship services; coordinates greeters, communion preparers and servers, and ushers Once again we are emphasizing that the accomplishments are by the working groups; the elders two main jobs are 1) to coordinate working groups and, 2) to lead the congregation via the session meetings which vote on various items in the session responsibilities. We are all working towards a vital, outreaching, effective ministry of this congregation. 2

When commissioners attend Presbytery, Synod or General Assembly, they are doing legislative and judicial business of the denomination. Per Capita is used to fund these meeting expenses. Presbytery Per Capita funds are also used to cover certain required expenses of the Ministry Committee, Preparation for Ministry Committee, and judicial Commissions or investigations, as well as ongoing administrative expenses. The whole church shares in these expenses since ours is a system of representative government. We are necessarily bound together as a covenant community through our union to God Almighty in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. 2014 Per Capita is determined by the number of members on our rolls as of the end of 2012. We reported 154 members. This means that Good Shepherd s apportionment for 2014 is $4,561.48 or about $30.00 per member. Per Capita can also be looked at as each members dues for being part of the Presbyterian Church. Broken down, Per Capita looks like this: General Assembly $6.87 Synod 5.75 Presbytery 17.00 Total Per Capita per Member $29.62 There is an envelope in your box of offering envelopes marked Per Capita. Or just make out your check to GSPC and write Per Capita on the memo line. Thank you! 4

After a busy December things have quieted down in the CE department. Our Sunday school classes are continuing to meet. Children s classes begin at 8:45, while the adult Sunday classes start at 8:30. We also have the Wednesday night Lectionary Bible Study in Pastor Edie s office at 5:30. Please plan to attend a class and share your thoughts on God s word. We are continuing to struggle with our youth group. Eight young people have committed to the mission trip to St. Paul June 6-14. We have reserved 3 slots for adults to accompany them. We are in desperate need for a man to become involved with the youth group and plan to go on the Mission trip. If a man doesn t attend, our two boys will not be able to attend. We need both male and female chaperones. Please consider the possibility of helping out in this way. At the last Session meeting the session members voted to postpone looking for a youth leader until we have a new pastor. We don t have enough in expected income to hire a youth leader as well as a pastor, so the Session members felt we needed to focus on a pastor at this time. Another reason we need another volunteer to help with the youth! This was a very difficult decision to make for all members of the Session, as we realize the great need for a youth leader. We pray God will answer our need. The Sunday school and Junior Church children will be making Valentines to deliver to Sunny Acres on February 9 th. Plan to take your child to Sunny Acres after worship that day for 30-45 minutes of delivering smiles and heartfelt wishes to the residents. They love to see the kids and enjoy the enthusiasm they show! The Youth Group is planning fund raisers to finance the Mission trip in June. On March 2 they will provide soup for a luncheon after worship. Christian Education members will provide bread and desserts. Plan to come and enjoy the lunch and donate to the Mission Trip expenses. Anything you can give will help. Also, individual youth members will be selling shares again to church members. Be sure to ask them about the shares on the 2 nd. 5 Growing Home - Hosting for Jan. 25 was covered as needed Benefit Concert for McConnell Family - The Mission Committee is working with Sara Tyburczy and Chuck Stevenson to cover the publicity, refreshments, decorations and babysitting for this event.
