MISSION anj Charity and Christianity Sterlin Varghese Just as love and faith are inseparable essential components of Christianity, charity is something inevitable from the Christian community. Charity is not an optional extra but a vibrant expression of love with an understanding that anything we have is a gift from God and does not belong to us. Our God has bestowed us with a good home, shelter, loving parents, siblings, friends and a good congregation. The riches we have may be what we earned or the fame we now enjoy may be because of our pedigree, but the poor people are devoid of even the basic essentials and our Lord has created these people with a sole belief that the affluent would help them. We should have an understanding that each of us is created by God. As said by our Lord in Luke 14-13, 14 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind; and you will be blessed because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death. It is the mindset of every person and his inner-conscious feeling to do something for the poor that matters as charity is not just about giving alms and must not be seen as a compulsion. As said by our lord in Mathews 6-20: By giving the poor you store riches for yourselves in heaven where moths cannot destroy and robbers cannot break in and steal. But many people including the youth have an obnoxious attitude towards the generous gesture of charity as sometimes they feel cheated when they come to know that the money they contributed did not reach the right hands or they have an insecure feeling that the money didn t reach the subliminal people in the society, thus bringing a casual attitude towards charity. This happens because in this fast paced world nobody has time for anyone, even our own parents and siblings, then how come towards the poor. One of the ways to gain confidence in ourselves that the poor get benefitted is to form committees in our churches. Just as there are committees in the church for the betterment of the church, in a similar way every church must have a committee dealing with charity works and every month an authentic centre where the poor dwell like slums, government hospitals, jails can be visited where the word of our Lord can be preached and a requisite amount can thus be contributed to the needy. Such lucid ideas would always bring the right outcome and when the senior members in the church take up this responsibility it would always be an enticement for the exuberant youth who are always on the lookout for novelty. Moreover it would help the younger generation to come out of the cocoon of selfishness where they have an obsession to reign at the helm leaving all others behind him/her. Such charity works would always help us to know the contrast in living ways of the middle class and the downtrodden and more than the apathy we would feel for them, none would thus be able to attain a sense of complacency after having a glimpse of such people how much ever famous or affluent a person may be. We as Christians must always have an altruistic mentality towards the society and charity is one such activity topping the list. As our lord has said in Proverbs 19-17: When you give to the poor it is like lending to the Lord and the Lord will pay you back. 10 February 2013 syrianorthodox.mission@gmail.com

anj God s love for His creation Lenu Paulose MISSION It was a beautiful sermon that I had been to a few weeks ago that made me come up with this topic, a topic which is the very core of one s life. In this world where love for God is often confused with religious fanaticism, our understanding about God s existence in our lives becomes very hazy and unclear. It then becomes very imperative to clear our mind so as to be able to visualise the miraculous hands of God working in our lives. We have to open our hearts to Him so that He can enter and make it His holy abode thus enriching us with His immense blessings. Never can we expect miracles to happen unless we actually allow Him to cast His glorious and splendid love in our lives. But it is the raw human nature of worrying and pondering over their problems that cloud up their minds and hearts. Just like the black clouds that block our vision of the clear sky, these thoughts block our minds from seeing the smiling face of God guiding us towards the solutions for our problems. Understanding God in our lives is very important, especially in today s world where humanity in humans is slowly turning into an extinct nature. We all comment upon this fact when we see the world around us or when we read articles in the newspapers highlighting about murders, violence, rape, dowry deaths and so on and so forth...the list goes on and on. Now, if we have a closer look at these facts, we can see the main culprit smiling at us very devilishly and the culprit is declining spirituality. And by spirituality I mean understanding God and incorporating His loving nature into our lives. The Holy Bible very aptly depicts His loving image in the verse, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).Because we can t understand the creation without understanding the Creator! And since we were created in His image, the further away we move from that image, greater will be the level of deterioration of our own image and inner self. The rotten inner self loses all its lustre and thus becomes incapable of reflecting the shine and glitter of God s unconditional love that it was embellished with. This inner darkness blinds us and leads us to the deep pits of temptations and sins that Satan has dug for us in our way of life. Revelation of God s love in our lives is the only way we can avoid these vicious pits and achieve salvation. So let s turn ourselves into a prism through which the life giving light of God could pass through and illuminate our lives with the beautiful colours of blessings that it splits into. MISSION anj DO NOT LET YOUR ANGER LEAD YOU TO SIN Riya Baby (First prize winner in Biju Thottikattil and Jose Kuttipuzhayil Memorial Elocution competition) Today I am thankful to God to have got this opportunity to express my views on the very thought provoking verse taken from Ephesians 4:26, Do not let your anger lead you to sin. 07th December 2012 - An article in Times published a shocking news of an Indian origin mother in UK who beat her son like a dog for not being able to memorize passages of Quran. The boy collapsed and died murmuring the verses from Quran. You must be thinking now as to - How can the innocent soul who gave birth to a child kill him for such a petty reason? The mother confessed that she often beat her son for no reason and that her anger often led to her bring out of control. Yes, a true incident of anger leading to a grievous, heinous sin. Anger itself is not sin but can lead to sins that we will regret forever. As Marcus Aurelius said, How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it? Thus, if we harbor anger/rage for long it eventually explodes leading us unto evil actions. Let s ponder more on how anger scientifically causes us to loose temper and lead us into sin. God has designed human beings in such a way that sustained anger will cause you to have immediate physical and spiritual changes. When you are angry:- 1. Your adrenaline surges, heart beats faster. 2. Your palms sweat, face flushes. 3. You have trouble sleeping. 4. You get depressed, moody, introverted. Bottom line is that staying angry is DEADLY dangerous to your health & life! Simply speaking, ANGER KILLS. The consistent counsel in scripture about anger is to be careful with it and set it aside: Proverbs 16:32 says, Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. Proverbs 14:17 & Ecclesiastes 7:9, describe the angry man as a fool. St. Mathew 5:22 proclaims that, Anyone who is angry with his brother is subject to judgment. Thus, as per the bible, anger is a weapon of the fools and awaits judgment if used and it takes great courage to control it. If we look towards our Lord, Exodus 34:6 says, The Lord is compassionate, gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness. We should also be like the Lord, as also urged by St James in Chapter 1:19 Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. Be careful while speaking when you are angry, as that s probably when you will make the best speech you ll ever regret. Anger by itself cannot be avoided, but we can learn to control it. In other words, You can t stop a bid from landing on your head but you can stop that bird from building a nest in your hair! The right treatment for anger is controlling it actually which is not denying it or internalizing it but expressing it in a safe place, in a safe way.by communicating our feelings to others who can understand and guide us and by resolving into prayers and meditation. Aristotle the great philosopher said, Anyone can become angry that is easy. But to be angry with 12 February 2013 syrianorthodox.mission@gmail.com

anj the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and in a right way that is not easy. Malcolm also urges us to become angry over a situation and not sad, because the sad just cry over but the angry bring a change. Jesus, St Paul and even God expressed anger. Jesus Christ overturned the tables of money changers and benches of those selling doves & drove out all who were buying and selling there as they had made the house of prayer a den of sobers (St. Mathew 21:12-13). Jesus even got angry at the hardness of the hearts of the Pharisees and scribes and even referred them as hypocrites (Mathew 23). That is righteous anger or constructive anger, anger that stands for justice & righteousness, and is used to accomplish good and not evil. Thus I conclude urging all of you to give away the anger which leads to sin but only harbor righteous anger that leads you to stand up for a noble cause. 14th Death Anniversary 23rd February 2013 In Loving Memory of : MISSION BIBLE VERSES ABOUT CHARITY Acts 20:35 - I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Hebrews 13:16 - But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. 1 John 3:17 - But whoso hath this world s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? Luke 21:1-4 - And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. MISSION anj Very Rev. Mathews Kavunkal Cor-episcopo - A PRIEST PAR EXCELLENCE Lt. K.C. Jacob Those who wept as they sowed their seed, gather the harvest with joy Psalm 126:5. A priest s role is one of inspiration, like server. But the kind of inspiration for which a priest is a channel to lift others up from their lowly condition, to inspire the people of the world to higher aspirations, to provoke people to noble virtues, and to raise the consciousness of mankind. In the positive pole of compassion, the priest feels sympathy for the psychological sufferings in the souls of others, and seeks to alleviate, it by encouraging them to find their way out of it. In the negative pole of zeal, the priest crusades to reform the wrongs of the world. He campaigns fervently to make life better for others. Pope John Paul II said in his address to priests in Melbourne in 1986 we priests, are only the earthenware vessels that hold the treasure and `the longer a man has the privilege of servicing as a priest, the more aware he becomes of human limitations and failures. The foregoing could set us thinking, what was the role of V. Rev. Fr. Mathews Kavunkal in this perspective. Life, for Kavunkal Achan as a priest during the past 35 years have been brilliant, creative, unconventional, energizing and exciting. He was able to contribute significantly to all the parishes he served. The prominent among them are : St. Mary s JSO Church, Bhilai (His first church), St. Mary s JSO Church, Neelimangalam, St. Joseph s Cathedral, Kottayam, St. Thomas JSO Church, Pakkil, St. Thomas JSO Church, Attumangalam, St. Mary s JSO Church, Pampady, Marthas Mooni JSO Church, Thiruvarp, St. Johns JSO Church, Olassa, St. Thomas JSO Church, Mumbai (For 2 terms), St. Mary s JSO Church, Muscat, St. Gregorios JSO Church, Chicago, (USA), St. Ignatius JSO Church,, Dallas (USA) (the last 2 churches in USA for the last 5 years). Besides his sacramental obligations, he also held several challenging posts such as Mg. Committee Member of Jacobite Syrian Church, Clergy Secretary, Kottayam Diocese, Secretary of Erstwhile outside Kerala Diocese, Vice President of Youth Association, President of Ecumenical Christian fellowship, Dallas, Executive member Ecumenical Association, Dallas, Member-Diocesan council, Chicago, to name a few. During his tenure, as a Vicar, Achan was instrumental in building parsonages, office complex, Tiruwarp, Chapels, side Altars and shrines. As a Vicar of St. Thomas JSO Church Congregation, his contribution and leadership can hardly be forgotten for developing St. Thomas JSO Church, Nerul to its present stature. During his tenure the temporary consecration of the church was performed by 22 February 2013 syrianorthodox.mission@gmail.com

anj H.G. Thomas Mor Themotheos, the former Diocesan Metropolitan.
