Page 3 October 16, 2016-29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections from Fr. Brian 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Beauty and the Beast movie not only presents us with a spectacular cinematic look at a classic fairy tale, but also provides an opportunity to review some forgotten lessons about love and life. A handsome young prince is imprisoned in the body of the Beast as a result of a spell cast upon him for trusting too much in appearances. He is miserable and lonely until the heroine of the story, Beauty, comes to live in his castle in order to spare her father s life. The Beast treats her kindly, but she cannot bear to accept his offer of marriage. After some time together, the Beast allows Beauty to leave the castle for a while and visit her family. When Beauty fails to return at the set time, she has a dream about Beast lying on the ground as if he were dead. Stricken with grief, she realizes now that the Beast means more to her than anyone else. So Beauty hurries back to the castle in search of the Beast. When she finds him on the ground dying, she pleads with him to live because she loves him and wants to marry him. At once the spell is broken and the repulsive Beast is transformed back into the handsome prince. Of course, as most fairy tales go, they live happily ever after. This simple story gives insight into this lection from the Gospel, especially into Jesus saying: So do not be afraid; you are of more value than any sparrows. Beauty in the fairy tale is a Christ-figure. Her selfless gesture of love for the Beast can be translated as saying to him: Do not be afraid anymore of loneliness and isolation. You are worth much more than to be treated like a beast. The power of these words is enough to break the spell binding the prince and to free him. He is now able to see himself as worthy of someone s love not because of his appearance, but because of what he is. To prove individual worth in the sight of God, Jesus compares humans to birds not just any birds but to sparrows, the cheapest bird one could buy at the market in our Lord s time. God s providential care extends to them, to be sure, and not one of such common, seemingly worthless birds would land on the ground but what the Creator would take note. Biblical commentator William Barclay points out that the root meaning of fall in this context is not death, but rather to light upon the ground. This meaning makes the comparison even stronger for if God cares for the sparrow every time it lights and hops on the ground, then how much more does God care for us who have much more potential for serving God than many sparrows. The God who takes note of every sparrow landing, surely values every right move we make. That thought has transformed many a beast into a prince. How about you and I? How has God transformed your life and mine? He gave us His very best and Jesus remains our role model --- Hopefully you and I are measuring up to our potential. YÜA UÜ tç
