BACH Please silence your cell phone before worship. Please fill out the attendance form and pass it down the row. Welcome Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Loving God, C we confess that we have turned from you to follow our own ways. We have spoken or acted too quickly; or not spoken or acted at all. We have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we don t know. We have thought more about ourselves than others; and we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around; give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. P In great mercy, God s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear this gospel promise: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Special Music Children s Message 4 CALVARY CHOIR INTERN PASTOR MEGAN PHILLIPS Reading: Acts 19:1-7 L A reading from Acts of the Apostles, the nineteenth chapter: 1While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 Then he said, Into what then were you baptized? They answered, Into John s baptism. 4 Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied 7altogether there were about twelve of them. L Word of God, word of life. C Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation A voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved,* with whom I am well pleased. his dying and rising, and his promise to come again, C we await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy and life-giving light. By your Spirit bless us and this meal, refresh with this heavenly food, C may we be light for the world, revealing the brilliance of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. C Amen Lord s Prayer A Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Communion We receive Holy Communion kneeling at the rail. The ushers will guide you forward from the front pews to kneel at the rail as space is available. We fill in from the front to the back. Please stay at the rail to pray as long as you desire. If you are unable to come forward, please sit by the aisle and let an usher know; a minister will bring Communion to you in your seat. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter: C Glory to you, O Lord. 4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn On Jordan s Stormy Banks I #437 Sermon be-love-d REV. LORI CORNELL SERVICE OF HOLY BAPTISM OF OLOF ALEXANDER ESPEL-LOGAN P God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. Pastor addresses sponsors: P Who presents Olof Alexander for baptism? Pastor addresses parents: P Sean and Catherine, called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Olof Alexander baptized into Christ? 10 5

Pastor addresses parents and sponsors: P As you bring Olof to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God's faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. P Do you promise to help Olof grow in the Christian faith and life? P Mark, Kathy and Eric, on behalf of Sean and Catherine, do you promise to nurture Olof in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? The presiding minister addresses the assembly: P People of God, do you promise to support Olof Alexander and pray for him in his new life in Christ? C We do. P I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church. P Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? C I renounce them. P Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? C I renounce them. P Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? C I renounce them. A Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 6 Offering Prayer A Let us pray. Merciful God, C receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Great Thanksgiving p. 129 P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise...we praise your name and join their unending hymn: The Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy p. 130 Eucharistic Prayer P Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light, shining in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his preaching and healing, 9

P Olof Alexander, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, the spirit of mercy. P Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Olof Alexander with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. P Olof Alexander, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. WELCOME P Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. A Let us welcome this newly baptized child of God. C We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. Prayers of Intercession Passing of the Peace P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Welcome & Announcements (Response: A Let us pray. C Have mercy, O God.) 8 Offering Arioso J.S. BACH Offertory Hymn Christ, Be Our Light #715, v. 5 A Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. A Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Congregation is seated. Children are invited to come forward to witness the Baptism. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT P The Lord be with you. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. P We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that Olof Alexander who is washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. BAPTISM 7
