Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. I Corinthians 15:12-19

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a historical fact!

The Resurrection is the climax of all four gospels: The foundation of the Epistles: Greatest event in human history!

According to the experts the resurrection is foolishness: -weak minded. -against all laws of nature. -believing something doesn t make it true.

Feb. 27, 1991, at the height of Desert Storm, Ruth Dillow received a very sad letter from the Pentagon: -Clayton Carpenter, Private 1st Class was killed in action.

Ruth Dillow later wrote, "I can t begin to describe my grief & shock. It was almost more than I could bear. For 3 days I wept. For 3 days I expressed anger & loss. For 3 days people tried to comfort me, to no avail because the loss was too great." But 3 days after she received that message, the telephone rang. The voice on the other end said, "Mom, it s me. I m alive." Ruth Dillow said, "I couldn t believe it at first. But then I recognized his voice, & he really was alive." The message was all a mistake! She said, "I laughed, I cried, I felt like turning cartwheels, because my son whom I had thought was dead, was really alive. I m sure none of you can even begin to understand how I felt."

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. John 20:20

The Resurrection of Christ is History! Why is it important?

1. It substantiates His Claims. -I am the Resurrection and the life. -I am the way to eternal life. -I am the door. -I am the way, the truth and life.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die John 11:25-26

I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Rev. 1:18

-He who believes in me will never die. -Destroy this temple and in 3 days - I and the Father are one.

2. It shows His power! - All power is given unto me Mt. 28 - No one takes my life from me John 10

We are going up to Jerusalem, he said, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise. Mark 10:33-34

3. It means our sins are forgiven! -Christ died for our sins. -Our debt has been paid.

4. It means eternal life! -our future is secure! Because I live, you also will live John 14:19

How do we know for sure he rose? 1. The tomb was empty, almost. -wrong tomb -swoon theory -disciples stole the body

2. The grave clothes were undisturbed. 3. He was seen. -ten separate occasions. -500 at one time.

4. The Christian Church. -the disciples lived with no fear. -11 out of 12 died as martyrs. 5. The Christian Book. 6. The Christian Day.

7. Changed lives! -those who met Jesus and believed on him were never the same. -we serve a living Savior!

Disciples: -changed men! -no fear of death! -today breaking mirrors. -little boy-what do you want be? -Woody Allen

How they died: -Matthew was killed in Egypt. -Mark was dragged through the streets until he was dead. -Peter, Simeon, Andrew and Philip were crucified. -James was beheaded. -Bartholomew was flayed alive. -Thomas was pierced with lances.

-James the lesser was thrown from the temple and stoned to death. -Jude was shot to death with arrows. -Paul was beheaded.
