The Service of the Word Worship begins with your silent prayers and the first note of the prelude. Prelude: Chorale-Prelude on a Theme by Tallis Harold E. Darke (1888-1976) The people stand for: Processional Hymn 680 O God our help in ages past St. Anne Celebrant: Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 3

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. The Collect of the Day Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 Lector: A reading from the book of Amos Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. 6

Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Lector: People: The Response Psalm 90:12-17 The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Domine, refugium The Antiphon is first sung by the Choir and repeated by All, and then as indicated. (Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom) 7

The Epistle Hebrews 4:12-16 Lector: A reading from the letter to the Hebrews The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Gradual Hymn 605, What does the Lord require Sharpthorne The Holy Gospel Mark 10:17-31 Celebrant: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark People: Glory to you, Lord Christ As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You 8

shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. Celebrant: People: The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Christ The Sermon 9 The Rev. Philip Major

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People O Lord God of Israel, give us your favor as we seek your face. Show us your glory and hide us under your wings. We pray for forgiveness and wisdom for those who follow you especially for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury, Francis, Bishop of Rome, Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Dede, our Bishop, Philip, our Rector, John, our seminary graduate and for all people who believe your name. Silence is kept. Let your presence be in our life; that justice would be established in our land. 10

Give the fear of your name to all leaders of our country especially Donald, Andrew, Joanie, Ben, John, Chuck and Kirsten. We pray that our government reflect your wisdom for all the world Silence is kept. Let your presence be in our life; that justice would be established in our land. Visit your servants who lay hands of healing upon fellow worshippers. Give them strength and faith, that the people would receive your divine healing. Silence is kept. Let your presence be in our life; that justice would be established in our land. Strengthen and comfort those in need of physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Guide us with your love and be with us as you have promised. Silence is kept. Let your presence be in our life; that justice would be established in our land. We pray for those who have died, that their love of God would be reflected in our lives. Silence is kept. Let your presence be in our life; that justice would be established in our land. The Celebrant concludes the prayers with a collect. Confession of Sin The Celebrant says Let us confess our sins to God. The people kneel. Silence may be kept. Celebrant and People God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, 11

opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world, you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant: People: The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also, with you. Birthday and Anniversary Prayers Watch over your child, O Lord, as her days increase; bless and guide her wherever she may be. Strengthen her when she stands; comfort her when discouraged or sorrowful; raise her up if she falls; and in her heart may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of her life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. At the Offertory, an Anthem The Holy Communion Setting by Calvin Hampton (1938-1984) We are climbing Jacob s ladder, Soldiers of the cross. Every round goes higher, Soldiers of the cross. Sinners, do you love my Jesus? Soldiers of the cross. If you love him, why not serve him? Rise, shine, give God glory; Soldiers of the cross. We are climbing higher, higher, Soldiers of the cross. Celebrant: People: All things come of Thee O Lord; And of Thine own have we given Thee. 12

The Great Thanksgiving Invitation to thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The story of our salvation Creator of all goodness, you form us in your image and call us to be stewards of creation. You bless us with intelligence and free will, but we have often failed to care for your creation and for the many members of your family all over the earth. Yet you have never failed to love us. You guide us with your Word, given to us in Holy Scripture. You lead us in your ways of truth and love through prophets and saints, past and present. In the birth of your Son you partnered with us in the great mystery of life. Jesus lived as we live in a time of despair and violence. Sanctus Extending hands of justice and hope, Jesus reconciles us with the faith of our Jewish brothers and sisters. Remembering his way we sing Isaiah s hymn of praise with people of faith in every place: Hymnal S-130 Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 13 Deutsche Messe Anamnesis Extending hands of truth and love, Jesus reconciles us with present and future generations of disciples. Remembering his way we join our voices in your new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.

Extending hands of mercy and forgiveness, Jesus overcame the power of death and reconciles us with the pain and suffering of mortal life. Remembering his way we proclaim the mystery of the resurrection: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Extending hands of grace and peace, Jesus reconciles us with you. Remembering his way we turn to you in this blest sacrament of unity. Jesus sat at supper with his friends, gave thanks to you, broke the bread and gave it to his friends, saying, Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. He gave thanks to you, gave it to his friends, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Oblation and Invocation We offer the fruits of your creation back to you for your blessing. Send your Holy Spirit upon this bread and this wine that they may be for us the Body and Blood of Christ. We offer our lives back to you for your blessing. Send your Holy Spirit upon us that we might live in you as you live in us. Doxology Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, our God and Creator. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread 14

A period of silence is kept. Fraction Anthem: Hymn S-164 We follow Jesus, who turned no one away. No one will be turned away from God s table in this place. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward for a blessing. Baptism is the rite of initiation into the church. If you would like to be baptized please speak with our rector, Fr. Philip. Communion Hymn 763 As we gather at your table 1 As we gather at your Table, as we listen to your Word, help us know, O God, your presence; let our hearts and minds be stirred. Nourish us with sacred story till we claim it as our own; teach us through this holy banquet how to make Love s vict ry known. 2 Turn our worship into witness in the sacrament of life; send us forth to love and serve you, bringing peace where there is strife. Give us, Christ, your great compassion to forgive as you forgave; may we still behold your image in the world you died to save. 3 Gracious Spirit, help us summon other guests to share that Feast where triumphant Love will welcome those who had been last and least. There no more will envy blind us nor will pride our peace destroy, as we join with saints and angels to repeat the sounding joy. Words: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (B. 1944) Music: Raquel, Skinner Chávez-Melo 15 Deutsche Messe

Prayers for healing and wholeness are offered at the Peace Altar during the distribution of communion. You may come forward for prayers before or after you receive communion. You may ask for prayers for yourself or for someone else. Post communion Prayer The people are invited to stand Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
