CONCORDIA S PURPOSE To Make the Love of Jesus R.E.A.L. in the Lives of All People TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST FOOD FOR THE POOR SUNDAY October 14, 2012 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. 1 AS WE GATHER (Prepared by Jim Gann) Take care brothers, lest there be an evil, unbelieving heart leading you to fall away from the living God. Hebrews 3:12 ESV Last week I wrote about paying close attention in our services. This week let s consider the words in the quote from Hebrews above. Don t doubt for a second how easy it can be to fall away from God. Satan surrounds us with temptations at all times, yes, even here in Church. Once we succumb to temptation, unbelief can set in, pulling us further and further from God. What can we do? Ask God to send His Holy Spirit to help us. Pray that we don t fall away from God. Put our trust in Him. Support our brothers and sisters in Christ and they will support us. Keep this in mind too: Our cares, worries, troubles and hurts will all become shadows which will disappear in the Lord s radiant glory when He comes. means to be seated means to stand, unless repeated standing is difficult WELCOME SHARING OF THE PEACE

RINGING OF THE BELLS 2 CALL TO WORSHIP P: Peace be to this house, and to all who enter here, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit! C: Let all the servants of the Lord praise the name of the lord! P: Come all peoples everywhere. Let your mouths be open and your lips declare the wonderful name of our God. C: With joyful songs, come and sing of the goodness of our Lord. Come and worship Him our God. OPENING HYMN #803 Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee GOD S GOODNESS PROFESSED P: For life and health, for love and friendship, for this day of worship, and for the goodness and mercy God gives us all the days of our life, C: We thank and praise You, O God. P: For the wonder and beauty of the world; for all things true and honorable, just and pure, lovely and gracious, C: We thank and praise You, O God. P: For the gift of Jesus Christ, God s only-begotten Son; for the grace and truth which came by him; for His obedience unto death, even death on a cross, C: We thank and praise you, O God. P: For Jesus glorious resurrection and ascension to your right hand, and for his kingdom and glory and everlasting dominion-- C: We thank and praise you, O marvelous and majestic god. P: For the Holy Spirit, Who gives us life and counsels us in godliness; for the holy Christian Church and the fellowship of saints everywhere; for the message of the Gospel and the Sacraments which confirm us in God s love and grace,

C: We praise and adore Your name, O God. P: To the King of kings and Lord of lords---the immortal, invisible, only true God; our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier C: To Him be all honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 3 OUR CONFESSION AND GOD S RESPONSE P: We today praise the name of our God. But too often this past week, and maybe even already this morning, we have not spoken or lived to the praise and glory of His name. We sin often and go astray from being faithful children of the heavenly Father. Let us therefore confess our sinfulness and humbly request God s forgiving mercy. (Silence for mediation and personal confession) P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we have not always lived to your praise as Your children. We have neglected opportunities to witness, opportunities to help others in need, and opportunities to be fed by you. We have tried to build our lives on the shifting sands of self-gratification, and have put our trust in ourselves. Forgive us, O Lord, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Renew us by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we may become wellpleasing in Your sight. P: God has heard our prayer, and has answered in ways far beyond what we could even think or ask. In Jesus Christ He has redeemed us from all our sins, and forgiven us by faith in His holy name. I, therefore, an ordained servant of the Church, and by the authority of God s Holy Word, now publicly and personally declare to you the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Believe therefore on the Lord Jesus Christ! Rejoice in the knowledge of His grace! C: Thanks be to God for His magnificent gifts. Amen. 4 RESPONSE OF PRAISE Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart LSB 806

5 Text (st. 1) and Music: 1978 Integrity s Hosanna! Music Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, number 100012048. SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray: ALL: Lord Jesus Christ, whose grace always precedes and follows us, help us to forsake all trust in earthly gain and to find in You our heavenly treasure; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Amos 5:6-7, 10-15 (Seek the Lord and live.) R: The Old Testament reading is from Amos, chapter five. (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. ALLELUIA VERSE 6 HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:17-22 (Seek treasure in heaven rather than worldly wealth.) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. (After the reading ) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. APOSTLE'S CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. We invite the children forward as we sing: Hymn #783, v. 1 & 4 Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I with-hold; Take my intellect and use Ev ry pow r as Thou shalt choose. 8 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH [1 Timothy 2:1-4] P: St. Paul urged us to "bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2). Let us therefore pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Let us ask God's blessings on the nations of the world. (Silence for meditation) P: Lord over all, C: wherever the poor are oppressed, justice is denied, or basic needs are unmet--- P: raise up just and compassionate leaders to speak for their citizens, bear their burdens, and reform nations and communities so that the lowly and downtrodden may know dignity and joy. Let us pray for the Church here and around the world. (Silence for meditation) P: Lord Jesus, C: wherever our brothers and sisters gather around the world---

P: move them to speak Your Word with boldness, bearing their neighbors' burdens by exposing evil and proclaiming both judgment and mercy, so that many may come to trust You for all they need, both in time and eternity. Let us pray for the sick, those in mourning, and all near and dear to us who call out to God for relief from their various problems. We pray especially for and those we name before you now in our hearts. (Silence for meditation) P: O Holy Spirit, C: wherever we find friends and neighbors in need of compassion, companionship, healing or strength--- P: increase faith in us so that we may speak words of comfort and peace to them, bear their burdens with care and hope, and bring their concerns to You in prayer. [Petitions for local concerns may be added here by the pastor or assisting minister.] (Silence for meditation) P: Let us pray for ourselves as we use the worldly resources God has entrusted to our care. C: Lord our God, wherever we have opportunity to use our time, abilities, and finances to extend Your Gospel, to relieve the plight of our neighbors, or to influence the powers that be for the good of all--- P: speak Your Word to us and so move us to share Christ Jesus, the priceless treasure with those who cross paths with us. 9

P: Into Your hands, heavenly Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. + SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + PREPARATION P: Let us raise our hearts to the Lord. C: We raise hearts and voices in praise and thanksgiving to our great God. P: We praise and thank the Lord our God at all times, but especially when we remember how Jesus came to be the Lamb of God on our behalf and secured eternal life and joy for all people. He alone crushed the power of Satan, freed us from the bondage of sin, and provided us again with life and hope forever. Therefore with angels, archangels, and all the saints in heaven and earth, we praise and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ; for He alone is our Savior and Strength. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 P: Lord Jesus Christ, in giving us Your body and blood You remind us that You are the Lamb of God and the Light of the world. We remember Your incarnation, birth, and Baptism, Your sacrificial death and glorious resurrection. We await Your return. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: 10

LORD S PRAYER All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. AGNUS DEI 11
