Union congregation organized in 1832. The original building was erected in 1771 for the established Church of England in Botetourt County. Presbyterians have worshipped here continuously since the Revolutionary War. Announcements September 24 th, 2017 Welcome to all who worship with us today. If you are a visitor, please fill out a visitor card that is in your pew and put it in the collection plate or give to an Elder. All members, friends and visitors please join us after church in the Fellowship Hall for refreshments. David is a recently retired PC (USA) minister who most recently served The Presbyterian Church of Radford, VA. Patsy, his wife, is still working as a math coach for the Montgomery County School System at Eastern Montgomery High School. They have recently moved to Fincastle to enjoy their retirement years here, there and everywhere. Duty Elder: Becky Downs Coffee Hour: Alan & Carol Brenner Please call the office to schedule the use of our tables and chairs so we can be sure they are in the building when someone has signed up to use the Fellowship Hall. The congregational Care Committee is organizing a way for us to take turns calling on the Rev. Edgar Mayse. We will be checking on his welfare and helping with any needs he may have. There is a signup sheet in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to call him (after 12:00 noon) and perhaps take him out to lunch or dinner or drop off a meal at his house. Rescue Mission Items for September: Medium Boxes & Pain Relievers (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Naproxen) Botetourt Food Pantry: Always needs laundry detergent. They cannot use funds for this. This may also be left in Fellowship Hall. Nursery Worker needed as Eva has gone to college. August 19, 2017 Presbytery Meeting Farmville Presbyterian Church, Farmville, VA The One Hundred Thirteenth Meeting of the Presbytery of the Peaks was called to order by Moderator Melissa McNair-King at 12:30 p.m., on August 19, 2017 in the sanctuary of Farmville Presbyterian Church in Farmville, VA declaring with the affirmation of the Stated Clerk the presence of a quorum, and offering words of welcome and leading in prayer. Pastor of the host church, Tom Robinson, offered a warm welcome to all. As usual, some of the routine business of the presbytery was approved through the use of a Consent Agenda. By unanimous consent the Presbytery: 1. Approved request of Marina Gopadze and the congregation of Buchanan Presbyterian Church to dissolve the pastoral relationship with effective June 30, 2017. 2. Granted Marina Gopadze Honorably Retired Status. 3. Granted Tupper Garden, Member at Large, Honorably Retired Status. 4. Dismissed Jeff Binder to the Presbytery of the Cascades to serve as Designated Pastor of Valley Community Presbyterian Church, Portland, Oregon. 5. Dismissed Calvin Dixon, HR, to the Presbytery of Savannah. 6. Dismissed Katherine Jackson, Stated Supply, Pearisburg Presbyterian Church, to the Presbytery of the James to serve as pastor at Bott Memorial Presbyterian Church, in DeWitt, VA, effective August 31, 2017. The Presbytery was ably lead in worship by John Erb, Ruling Elder from Altavista PC; Jane Johnson, Teaching Elder at Grace PC, Martinsville; Carl Utley, Teaching Elder and Transitional General Presbyter; Denise Pillow, Hunger Action Advocate, and Teaching Elders Tom Robinson, Farmville Presbyterian Church and Amanda Bowman, New Century Hospice. A record offering of $1,070.48 was received during worship for the presbytery s 2 Cents a Meal Offering. The Presbytery has begun drawing to a conclusion its work with more than a dozen Presbytery Response Teams and Administrative Commissions related to congregations desiring to leave the PCUSA. Related to this work, the Presbytery approved: 1. The recommendation of the Administrative Commission for Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church that the Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church be dissolved, effective August 19, 2017 (however, final dissolution will not occur until all deeds have been signed by both parties), and that the Trustees of the Presbytery of the Peaks be directed to receive and transfer properties according to their own recommendation, that the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery be directed to receive and retain all congregational and Session minutes and records for transfer to Department of History, Office of the General Assembly, of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and that the AC be dismissed with thanks, having conducted its assigned task. 2. The recommendation of The Cabinet that the PRT process end Dec 31, 2017 and that any remaining PRT s be dissolved. Any session with lingering issues may request and administrative commission. In other business, the Committee on Ministry reported the actions it had taken on behalf of the presbytery since our last presbytery meeting in May. 1. Approved temporary pastoral relationships for the following: a) Between Amherst Presbyterian Church and John Scholer, Interim Pastor, from May 17, 2017 to May 16, 2018.

b) Between Mary Horner Walker and Bill Rountree, Stated Supply, from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2020. c) Between Brookneal Presbyterian Church, Phenix Presbyterian Church and Roanoke Presbyterian Church with Herndon Jeffreys, Temporary Supply, from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. d) Between Oak Level Presbyterian Church and Jeffrey A. Kisner, Interim Pastor, effective June 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017, with the understanding that the Oak Level Session and Interim Pastor will submit monthly reports regarding the progress and status of the Interim pastoral relationship. e) Approved the credentialing committee report for Vernie Bolden to serve as a stated supply at Fifth Avenue and approved the covenant contract between Vernie Bolden and Fifth Avenue from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018. f) Between Berry Hill Presbyterian Church and Elizabeth Soto, Temporary Supply, effective July 20, 2017 to January 19, 2018. g) Getween Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church and Ruling Elder Dale van Osten, Temporary Supply, effective July 17, 2017 to July 16, 2018. h) Between Glasgow Presbyterian Church and L. Wayne Meredith, Temporary Supply, effective Sept. 15, 2017 to Sept. 14, 2018. 2. Authorized the following CRE s to serve communion: a) Approved the request of Al and Barbara Jacobs to renew their authorization for a period of one year beginning July 1, 2017 and ending on June 30, 2018 to administer the sacrament of Communion to congregations in the Piedmont Neighborhood. b) Approved the request to grant Terri Cornwell, CRE, permission to administer Communion at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg from May 1, 2017 until December 31, 2017 as needed. 3. Approved the waiver of elder rotation requested by Brookneal Presbyterian Church and Green Ridge Presbyterian Church. 4. Added the following to the presbytery s pulpit supply list: a) Felecia Parsell, endorsed by the Session of Salem Presbyterian Church. b) William Seay, endorsed by Arvon Presbyterian Church. c) Philip Parker, a retired Baptist minister who attends Bedford Presbyterian Church. 5. Approved the request to form an Installation Commission to install Paul Brokaw at Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church while he continues to serve at Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church. 6. Approved the modifications made to Ed Soto s Installation Commission: Add Kristie Miles and Amanda Hayes-Bowman and remove Loren Tate Mitchell. Also, Betsy Soto will replace Tom Reif and sit on the Commission. 7. Appointed the following as Moderators: a) David Dickerson as Moderator of the Session at Fincastle Presbyterian Church effective July 1, 2017. b) George Goodman, HR, as Moderator of the Session at Westminster Presbyterian Church effective August 1, 2017. c) Shirley Larson, HR, as Moderator of the Session at the Presbyterian Church of Radford effective July 15, 2017. d) Jason Grimes, TE, as Moderator of the Session at Buchanan Presbyterian Church effective July 15, 2017. The Committee on Ministry recommended the following actions which were approved: 1. The approval of the Commission that installed Paul Brokaw as pastor of Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church in a shared relationship with Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church on June 4, 2017. Teaching Elders: Steve Earl, Moderator, Associate Presbyter for Ministry; Jim Slate, To Preach the Sermon, Interim Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Covington; Terri Slate, To Charge the Pastor, Honorably Retired and Ruling Elders: Jim Corson, First Presbyterian Church, Covington; Lucy Cahoon, To Charge the Congregation, Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Gordon James, Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church.

2. That Presbytery receive for First Reading the 2017 Minimum Financial Terms of Call. (This document can be read on the Presbytery s website: peakspresbytery.org.) 3. That Presbytery receive and act on the recommendations of the Alternative Ordination Process Work Group for the Rev. Herndon Jeffreys. It was the privilege of the Presbytery to receive two teaching elders and three candidates for ordination. All matters related to the following transfers, examinations, ordination, and/or installation were unanimously approved: 1. Jeffrey Kisner, Teaching Elder and member of Washington Presbytery, to serve as Interim Pastor at Oak Level Presbyterian Church, Halifax. 2. Elizabeth Soto, Teaching Elder and member of Charlotte Presbytery, to serve as Designated Temporary Supply Pastor at Berry Hill Presbyterian Church in South Boston. 3. Jacob Kave, candidate for ordination, under care of Shenandoah Presbytery, to serve in a validated ministry as Chaplain at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. 4. Susan (Robin) Robertson Williamson, candidate for ordination under care of the Presbytery of the James, to serve in a validated ministry as Chaplain at Carilion Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA. 5. Matthew Aldas, candidate for ordination under care of Mission Presbytery, to serve as Associate Pastor for Youth at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, effective August 20, 2017. The Missions Committee Report was presented by Denise Pillow. Eleven people representing three different churches went on the Presbytery trip to Guatemala, August 14-21.This group was commissioned in prayer by Rev. Carl Utley the morning on Aug. 14, 2017 at the Roanoke Airport. John Erb, moderator of the Nominations Committee, made recommendations. We welcome new members and chairs to serve on our committees. Thank you for your willingness to serve in our presbytery. The Resolution of Appreciation was given by Dick Boswell including a thank you to Farmville Presbyterian Church for being a gracious host and providing refreshments during the break. The Moderator, Melissa McNair King, closed the meeting with prayer. The final 2017 stated meeting of the presbytery, a full day meeting, will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.
