MAMBALAM TIMES ASHOK NAGAR - K.K. NAGAR EDITION www.mambalamtimes.in Vol. 15, No. 37 Police arrest two chain snatchers, recover jewellery A stolen bike helped police catch a two-member gang of chain snatchers on March 11. They had gone on a chainsnatching spree in various parts of the city including this neighbourhood over the past two months. Mambalam Police seized 55 sovereigns of jewellery from the duo who were identified as Saravanan, 23, of Erukkanchery, and Ghouse Basha alias Riaz, 23, of Pattalam. A special team headed by Saravanan (Dy. Commissioner, T. Nagar), was formed after a series of chain-snatching incidents were reported in the area. Police said Ghouse Basha was a small time racer, while Saravanan had been accused in a murder case and detained under the Goondas Act before coming out of prison recently. They had stolen a motorbike parked in front of a house in Chinmaya Nagar on March 9 and snatched chains from two women walking on the street in Virugambakkam and Vadapalani. The incidents, along with the registration number of the bike, were caught in CCTVs installed in both localities. The police immediately alerted the other stations and a vigil was kept for the stolen bike and the duo. An hour later, police intercepted the duo on the stolen bike near Virugambakkam and arrested them. On interrogation, the men revealed their involvement in several chain-snatching incidents in T. Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Mambalam, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam and Valasaravakkam in the past two months. Saravanan had joined hands with Basha to steal bikes and the duo later proceeded to steal mobile phones. To increase their earnings, they later switched to chain-snatching and disposed of the jewellery in North Chennai. They have been remanded to judicial custody. FREE The Ashok Nagar & K. K. MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Page 4 By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music 45 A noted textile magnate of Madras, Hassandas of the well known Kishinchand Chellaram clan, promoted a film company by name Hassandas Classical Talkies to make pictures based on the classics of India as well as the west to improve the quality of Tamil Cinema. With that laudable motive and ambition, he produced the historic Nandanar (1935) in which K. B. Sundarambal played the male role of the folk myth figure Nandan. Later he launched Navayuvan ( Modern Youth ) to make the youth of India realize the spiritual heritage and greatness of India. Hence it had another title, Geetha Saaram. It was directed by a young American, Michael Omalov, a classmate of the famous American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan and M. L. Tandon at the well known University of Southern California, (USC), Los Angeles. Dungan and Omalov came to India invited by Tandon to work in films. Navayuvan was his first film and, in the event, his last too. Satagopan was cast as the hero and the film created South Indian film history by being the first to be shot partly abroad in London, which was unthinkable in 1930s for a Tamil film! The hero goes to London for higher studies and those scenes were shot in the British capital London. The shooting created much local interest and was widely reported in the London press. The Daily Express, the noted newspaper, described Satagopan as the Rudolph Valentino of India! High praise indeed! While the shooting was going on in London, one evening Omalov vanished from sight and could not be traced! The panicked producers complained to the legendary Scotland Yard but even they could not trace the missing director! When all seemed lost and the worst was suspected to have happened and his body expected to surface in the Thames, the unit found a note in Omalov s loo! It said that his mother was seriously ill in America and he had to leave at once which he did as a dutiful son! He never returned and his absence upset the production and the film turned out to be a damp squib in spite of Rudolph Valentino of India, London shoot, the three titles and all! It did not help Satagopan in any manner except his visit to London! He was the first South Indian actor to shoot in London! (Omalov gave up films and later became the head of the Photography Department of Ford Motor Company, Detroit, Michigan, USA.) Satagopan played the hero in S. D. S. Yogi s Adrishtam (1939). This film was female-oriented and the hero did not have much scope. It was all about a missing young girl, a heiress, who had been forced by circumstances to beg for her living in the streets of Madras city, a lady lawyer fighting for her and such events. The role of the young girl was enacted by the noted Telugu actress, singer and socialite of Madras city, Tanguturi Suryakumari. She was the niece of Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, the noted leader and patriot, top lawyer and one of the great men of recent Indian political history who had become Chief Minister of two States, Madras and Andhra. Suryakumari was adjudged as Miss Madras in 1950s when a beauty contest was held for the first time in the city. Indeed Adrishtam was her film and her songs like Ayya Siru Penn... became hits. The role of the lawyer was played by the noted actress and star of her day, K. R. Chellam. And Satagopan was her husband in the movie. Chellam and Satagopan were very close in real life too and their friends expected them to marry but it did not happen. Venuganam (1941) was another mythological film built around Lord Krishna, in which Satagopan and N. C. Vasanthakokilam were in the lead roles. It was directed by Murugadasa (Muthuswami Iyer), a pioneer of Tamil Cinema, regretfully forgotten today. The report had a quick impact and the authorities last week demolished and removed the protrusion, but have instead created a ramp in its place. 2-wheeler owners are now taking advantage of the ramp to park their vehicles on the platform. I really don t understand what the need is for a ramp at the bus-stop shelter. Will the authorities remove the ramp so that it is not misused by drivers to park vehicles on the platform and block the way for pedestrians. Dr. R. Narasimhan, T. Nagar Tenants must be cautious before occupying flats Sir, T. Nagar/Mambalam was among the first areas in Chennai where independent houses were converted into flats. Most flat complexes have associations where office-bearers are elected to manage the affairs, collect monthly maintenance fees and manage the upkeep of the building and infrastructure. Often some owners default on maintenance fee or are at loggerheads with the office-bearers for various reasons. In this category, it is the tenants of such flats who get harassed by the officebearers. Often these issues come to light only after the tenant occupies the flat after paying a hefty deposit to the owner. Recently, an acquaintance of mine took a flat on rent and, within a few days, vacated it due to several issues between the owner and the office-bearers that were affecting his stay and peace of mind. Many tenants face such problems and endure them due to compulsions. Most owners, who stay away, are not keen on sorting out the problems and also hide these facts from tenants before letting out the flat. So it is imperative that prospective tenants should ascertain all these facts before renting a flat. The office-bearers will also do well to put up a board in the complex indicating the maintenance charges, any other charges and the details of the dues from owners who rent out flats. This will not only help the association to collect the dues, but also give a clear picture to prospective tenants. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Where is my smart neighbourhood? Sir, I am a long-time resident of T. Nagar and have seen it grow from a calm and peaceful neighbourhood to the buzzing commercial hub of today. The unplanned commercial growth has led to numerous problems including encroachments, deviations in construction and safety norms, deficient sewage and storm water drain capacities and commercial intrusion into residential areas. Resident associations and other social activist groups have taken up these issues with the authorities and have also filed PILs in courts, but the problems only continue to grow and the residents are the worst affected. In 2015, the residents got some kind of a relief when Chennai Corporation included T. Nagar in its Smart City Project funded by the Central Govt. But since then, except for a couple of Pedestrian Plaza trials, the project still remains only on paper. I now wonder if the project will ever take off. Residents have lost faith in the Smart City Project as the second Pedestrian Plaza trial only invoked lukewarm response from the locals. May I request Chennai Corporation to announce a time frame and start the project at the earliest to mitigate the travails of the residents of the neighbourhood. V. S. Narayanaswamy, T. Nagar Municipal bonds can augment State s resources Sir, I retired as a senior official from the State revenue dept. The State Govt. is mainly depending on state and central grants for infrastructure projects and their maintenance has affected the quality of civic services provided to residents leading to long delays in project implementation and escalation in cost. The T. Nagar Pedestrian Plaza for example has seen a delay of more than four years since its announcement in 2012. Similarly the Smart City project for T. Nagar is yet to even take off on paper since its announcement in 2015. Why can t the Corporation also look for alternative measures like issuing municipal bonds to raise funds, which in a way also brings public participation into the infrastructure development? Its attempt to issue bonds in 2005 may not have been successful, but the demographics have since changed and could go a long way in resource management. R. Nagalingam, Cenotaph Road, Nandanam Appeal for Cholan Express to halt at Mambalam Station Sir, Over the years, resident associations and other local bodies have sent several appeals to Southern Railway requesting that Cholan Express (Train No. 16854) should halt at Mambalam Station. It is one of the few trains that go via Thanjavur and Kumbakonam. A number of locals, especially senior citizens, visit these temple cities on pilgrimage tours, before auspicious occasions or during important festivals. So, if the train halts at Mambalam Station, it would make life easy for them. Now, they are forced to haul their luggage to Egmore or Tambaram to board the train. I request the railway authorities to heed the request of the residents to halt the train at Mambalam Station, even if for a few minutes only. N. Jayendran, West Mambalam, Ph: 95511 55523
