Minor Prophets History Zechariah 931 BC 722 BC 586 BC 536 BC 516 BC Israel Splits Northern Kingdom Southern Kingdom Return from Exile Temple in Two Exiled to Assyria Exiled to Babylon Rebuilt

On the seventh day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, an official of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 9 He set fire to the temple of the LORD, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down. 10 The whole Babylonian army under the commander of the imperial The Background guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. 11 Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile the people who remained in the city, along with the rest of the populace and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon. 12 But the commander left behind some of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields. 2 Kings 25:8-12 (NIV)

How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow The Background is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave. Lamentations 1:1 (NIV)

This is what the LORD says: When seventy years are completed for The Background Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. Jeremiah 29:10 (NIV)

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also The Background to put it in writing: 2 This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. 3 Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the LORD, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. Ezra 1:1-3 (NIV)

With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever. And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12 But many of the older priests and The Background Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy. 13 No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away. Ezra 3:11-13 (NIV)

As soon as the copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum and Shimshai the secretary and their associates, they went The Background immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and compelled them by force to stop. 24 Thus the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. Ezra 4:23-24 (NIV)

Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel son of The Background Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them. Ezra 5:1-2 (NIV)

Seventy sevens are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to The Background bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place. Daniel 9:24 (NIV)

Hope during spiritual discouragement comes from a higher vision of God's purpose and plan for His people.

I. Call to Repentance (1:1-6) II. 8 Night Visions (1:7 6:1-8) Zechariah Outline III. A Picture of the Coming Priest King (6:9-15) IV.From Fasting to Feasting (7:1 8:23) V. 2 Oracles of Hope (9:1 14:21)

1. God sees and God cares (1:7-17) 2. God uses small acts of faithfulness (1:18-21) 3. God will restore His City (2:1-13) 8 Night Visions 4. God will forgive the leadership (3:1-10) 5. God will empower the leadership (4:1-14) 6. God will judge sin (5:1-4) 7. God will remove the people's sin (5:5-11) 8. God will bring justice to the nations (6:1-8)

This is what the LORD says: I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City, and the mountain of the LORD Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain... 9 This is what the LORD Almighty says: Now hear these words, Let From Fasting To Feasting (7:1 8:23) your hands be strong so that the temple may be built. This is also what the prophets said who were present when the foundation was laid for the house of the LORD Almighty... 19 This is what the LORD Almighty says: The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace. Zechariah 8:3, 9, 19 (NIV)

Hope during spiritual discouragement comes from a higher vision of God's purpose and plan for His people.

The Promise Of Return Therefore this is what the LORD says: I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem, declares the LORD Almighty. Zechariah 1:16 (NIV)

Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you, declares the LORD. 11 Many nations will be joined with the LORD in that day and will become my people. I will live among The Promise Of Return you and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. 12 The LORD will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem. 13 Be still before the LORD, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. Zechariah 2:10-13 (NIV)

The Promise Of Return So he said to me, This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD Almighty. Zechariah 4:6 (NIV

And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to The Promise Of Return seek the LORD Almighty and to entreat him. 23 This is what the LORD Almighty says: In those days ten people from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you. Zechariah 8:22-23 (NIV)

A prophecy: The word of the LORD concerning Israel. The LORD, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares: 2 I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 3 On that day, The Promise Of Return when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. 4 On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness, declares the LORD. I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. 5 Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the LORD Almighty is their God. Zechariah 12:1-5 (NIV)

The Promise Of Return On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. Zechariah 13:1 (NIV)

The Promise Of Return A day of the LORD is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. 2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. 3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. Zechariah 14:1-5 (NIV)

On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day a day known only to the LORD with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will The Promise Of Return be light. 8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. 9 The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name. Zechariah 14:6-9 (NIV)

The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from The Promise Of Return the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. 11 It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure. Zechariah 14:10-11 (NIV)

This is the plague with which the LORD will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day people will be The Promise Of Return stricken by the LORD with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14 Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15 A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps. Zechariah 14:12-15 (NIV)

Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 17 If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the The Promise Of Return King, the LORD Almighty, they will have no rain. 18 If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The LORD will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 19 This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. Zechariah 14:16-19 (NIV)

On that day HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the LORD s house will be like the The Promise Of Return sacred bowls in front of the altar. 21 Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD Almighty. Zechariah 14:20-21 (NIV)

Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring The Coming Of The King my servant, the Branch. 9 See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it, says the LORD Almighty, and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. Zechariah 3:8-9 (NIV)

Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jozadak. 12 Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. 13 It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be The Coming Of The King clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two. 14 The crown will be given to Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen son of Zephaniah as a memorial in the temple of the LORD. 15 Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the LORD your God. Zechariah 6:11-15 (NIV)

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding The Coming Of The King on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:9-10 (NIV)

I told them, If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it. The Coming Of The King So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, Throw it to the potter the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the LORD. Zechariah 11:12-13 (NIV)

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of The Coming Of The King Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. Zechariah 12:10 (NIV

Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me! declares the LORD Almighty. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little The Coming Of The King ones. 8 In the whole land, declares the LORD, two-thirds will be struck down and perish; yet one-third will be left in it. 9 This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, They are my people, and they will say, The LORD is our God. Zechariah 13:7-9 (NIV)

Therefore this is what the LORD says: I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem, declares the LORD Almighty. Zechariah 1:16 (NIV) Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days. 20 They replied, It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days? 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. John 2:19-21 (NIV)

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them... 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, Who is this? Matthew 21:6, 10 (NIV)

I told them, If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it. So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said to me, Throw it to the potter the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter Then one of the Twelve the one called Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests 15 and asked, What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you? So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-15 (NIV) at the house of the LORD. Zechariah 11:12-13 (NIV)

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. John 19:32-34 (NIV) firstborn son. Zechariah 12:10 (NIV)

Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd the man who is close to me! declares the LORD Almighty. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. Zechariah 13:7 (NIV) lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11 (NIV)

Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me! declares the LORD Almighty. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled. 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. Mark 14:49-50 (NIV) Zechariah 13:7 (NIV)

Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you, declares the LORD. 11 Many nations will be joined with the LORD in that day and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. 12 The LORD will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem. Zechariah 2:10-12 (NIV) And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Look! God s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. Revelation 21:3-4 (NIV)

Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and The Mission of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way, after supper he The Good News took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)

Hope during spiritual discouragement comes from a higher vision of God's purpose and plan for His people.
