SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS LUTHERAN CHURCH A Mighty Fortress: Daily Wisdom from the Lutheran Tradition 101.9 The Spirit Hosted by Rev. Andrew J. Abraham 9:30AM & 7:30PM Monday thru Friday Jeffrey S Long, CFP, Financial Consultant (931)287-0300 facebook.com/jeff.long.thrivent SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS LUTHERAN CHURCH We are unabashedly and unapologetically faithful to Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Apostles, deeply and profoundly in love with JESUS CHRIST, who alone is our dear Lord and Redeemer, and eager to share with the hurting of our community the life giving promises of the Gospel and the Holy Sacraments of the Church.

Should you receive Holy Communion today? Holy Communion is the real and saving Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, mysteriously made present in ordinary bread and wine, according to the promise Christ made at His Last Supper. Through this wondrous gift, we believe that Christ extends to us the fullness of salvation, the forgiveness of our sins, a strengthening of our faith and protection from the assaults of the devil. Ultimately, we hope that everyone will come to believe and trust in these promises as we do here at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran. However, if you do not yet believe in these mysteries concerning Holy Communion, are unwilling to ask God s forgiveness for personal sins or have not yet been baptized, which ALWAYS precedes one s participation in Holy Communion, it is best to simply wait. (For those who wish to abstain from alcohol, please find dealcoholized wine in the center of the communion tray it is pinkish in color. If you are unsure about which cups have dealcoholized wine, simply ask the elder for assistance when he comes to you.) RINGING OF THE CHIME and WELCOME (It is our custom here at Shepherd of the Hills to remain seated for the first part of the opening hymn and then stand for the final verse).

OPENING HYMN: God Himself Is Present Public domain SERVICE OF THE WORD INVOCATION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:8 9) (pause for silent reflection) Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God, in His mercy, has sent His Son to die for you, and for His sake, forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. KYRIE

SERMON NOTES

HYMN OF PRAISE: Gloria in Excelsis We can serve Him best. Onward, then, for Jesus! Let this be our aim: Serve the Lord with gladness! Glorify His name! Serve the Lord with gladness! There s no greater joy Than to serve the Master, Work in His employ. As we build His kingdom Angels, too, rejoice Over every sinner Brought to hear His voice. Onward, then, for Jesus! Let this be our aim: Serve the Lord with gladness! Glorify His name! Tune: (LSB 662, LW 518) Prof. Ernest Lewerenz DISMISSAL Let us go in the peace of Christ our Lord. Thanks be to God. Thanks to Dorothy Buuck for the lovely flowers in honor of her daughters birthdays!

POST COMMUNION COLLECT O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving kindness sent Your only begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION Let us bless the Lord! Thanks be to God. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His favor upon you and give His peace. Amen. CLOSING HYMN: Serve the Lord With Gladness Serve the Lord with gladness! It is He alone Who redeemed us sinners, Guides us as His own To enjoy the blessings Of His love and grace, Will at last in glory Meet us face to face. Onward, then, for Jesus! Let this be our aim: Serve the Lord with gladness! Glorify His name. Serve the Lord with gladness! He gave us command To proclaim His Gospel Now in every land So that fellow sinners May, like us, be blest. Leading them to Jesus, COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, Your divine wisdom sets in order all things in heaven and on earth. Put away from us all things hurtful and give us those things that are beneficial for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. READINGS FROM SACRED SCRIPTURE Ecclesiastes 5:10 20 He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. 13 There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 As he came from his mother s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger. 18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19 Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 119:9 16 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the just decrees of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Sinful life, thy bonds I sever, Leave thee now forever. 6 Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in. Those who love the Father, Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yea, whate er I here must bear, Thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesus, priceless treasure! Public domain POST COMMUNION CANTICLE (Optional) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Hebrews 4:11 13 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Jesus, Priceless Treasure GOSPEL PRELUDE A Reading from the Holy Gospel of St. Mark, the tenth chapter: Glory to You, O Lord! Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 5 Evil world, I leave thee; Thou canst not deceive me, Thine appeal is vain. Sin that once did blind me, Get thee far behind me, Come not forth again. Past thy hour, O pride and pow r; 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. 28 Peter began to say to him, See, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ!

Public domain SERMON APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you always! Amen. AGNUS DEI The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The LWML Pledge Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In fervent gratitude for the Savior s dying love and His blood bought gift of redemption we dedicate ourselves to Him with all that we are and have; God has entrusted to His people the task of teaching all nations. We thank Him for the 76 years He has blessed the work of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League. And in obedience to His call for workers in the harvest fields, we pledge Him our willing service wherever and whenever He has need of us. That the joyous truth of the Gospel may be known in every generation; We consecrate to our Savior our hands to work for Him, our feet to go on His errands, our voice to sing His praises, our lips to proclaim His redeeming love, our silver and our gold to extend His Kingdom, our will to do His will, and every power of our life, We are mindful of the shortness of time and uncertainties of life. Preserve our faithfulness and strengthen us for service in our communities and throughout the world. To the great task of bringing the lost and the erring into eternal fellowship with Him. Amen!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH: Against the Love of Money Almighty God, heavenly Father, You have called us to be Your children and heirs of Your gracious promises in Christ Jesus. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may forsake all covetous desires and the inordinate love of riches. Deliver us from the pursuit of passing things that we may seek the kingdom of Your Son and trust in His righteousness and so find blessedness and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. OFFERING SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT The Lord be with you! And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places gives thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore, we join the mighty throngs of angels and archangels, the saints of the church triumphant, the prophets, the apostles, the martyrs, all whose robes are made white in the blood of the Lamb, and the entire heavenly host, as together we share in the song of Your eternal glory: Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the allavailing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.
