BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH George Theodore Engelman, Jr. was born 11 November 1919, in Granite City, Illinois, to George T. Engelman and Helena Wood Engelman. In 1922, after George was transferred three times by the American Steel Foundry (ASF), George became a purchasing agent for ASF and settled the family in Hammond, Indiana. George Jr. attended Wallace School, Washington Junior High School, and graduated from Hammond High School, 11 June 1937. He attended Indiana University, Bloomington, and was a cadet sergeant in the ROTC, While at IU he received several debate and speaking awards and graduated with an AB in English, June 1941. At the time, George Jr. was engaged to June Bottorff from Hammond, but when World War II broke out they ended their engagement. George enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private. After attending Officer Candidate School he was promoted to 2nd Lt. in the Signal Corps, being trained in cryptography. He was stationed at the Pentagon and delivered secret messages to the White House. He was a "Plank Holder" from the USS Rocky Mount (ACG-3), and participated in the invasion of the Kwajalein Islands, Manus, and others, and the September 1944 invasion of the Philippine Islands. On 5 September 1943, he married Irene June Avery (1915-1993) in Webb City, Missouri. After his discharge from the Army, March 1946, he attended Indiana University on the GI Bill to earn his MA. Son, George Theodore Engelman III (aka Ted Engelman) was born in Bloomington, Indiana, 3 June 1947. While teaching English at Albion High School in Edwards County, Illinois, daughter, Martha Lou Engelman (Smith) was born 5 March 1949 in Evansville, Indiana. Discharged to the U.S. Army Ready Reserve, George was teaching at Bloomington High School (IN) when recalled in January 1951 to active duty when the Korean War broke out. The family was assigned to 8th Army at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. In 1952, the Engelman family returned to I.U. (Bloomington, IN) so George could complete his MS in education. By that time, George had taught high school in Gary, Indiana, Albion, Illinois, and Bloomington, Indiana. In 1953 George was hired by RCA in Bloomington to work with public relations. In August 1957, George moved the family to Oneonta, New York, where he took the position of Assistant to the President at Oneonta State University (SUNY). In August 1964, George moved the family sixty miles north to Johnstown, New York, to become the first Director of Admissions and Director of Evening Programs at the new Fulton-Montgomery Community College. In 1973, George left Fulton-Montgomery Community College and became editor and publisher of The Patriot, a local weekly newspaper. George retired after The Patriot folded in 1974. He was active as President of the Fulton County Historical Society, the Lions, Rotary, and attended annual reunions of the USS Rocky Mount. He retired with the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was widowed in December 1993. He married his former fiancée, Jane Bottorff, in May 1995, in Sun City Center, Florida. For several years they made their summer home in Johnstown, NY, and wintered in Sun City Center, FL. They eventually made Florida their home.
