LIFT HIGH THE CROSS Hymnal page: 837 INVOCATION p: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. c: Amen. REMEMBRANCE OF BAPTISM p: In Holy Baptism Howard was clothed with the robe of Christ s righteousness that covered his sin. St. Paul says: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? c: We were buried there with Him by Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. PSALM 46 (Antiphon: Ps. 46:7) p: The LORD of hosts is ^with us;*the God of Jacob is our ^fortress. p: God is our ref^uge and strength,* a very present help in ^trouble. c: Therefore we will not fear though the ^earth gives way,* though the mountains be moved into the heart ^of the sea, p: though its waters ^roar and foam,* though the mountains tremble at its ^swelling. c: There is a river whose streams make glad the cit^y of God,* the holy habitation of the ^Most High. p: God is in the midst of her; she shall ^not be moved;* God will help her when ^morning dawns. c: The nations rage, the kingdoms ^totter;* He utters his voice, the ^earth melts. p: The LORD of hosts is ^with us;* the God of Jacob is our ^fortress. c: Come, behold the works ^of the LORD,* how He has brought desolations ^on the earth. p: He makes wars cease to the end ^of the earth;*
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots ^with fire. c: Be still, and know that ^I am God.* I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted ^in the earth! p: The LORD of hosts is ^with us;* the God of Jacob is our ^fortress. KYRIE c: Glory be to the Father and ^to the Son* and to the Holy ^Spirit; As it was in the be^ginning,* is now, and will be forever. ^Amen. p: The LORD of hosts is ^with us;*the God of Jacob is our ^fortress. p: Lord, have mercy upon us. c: Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. p: The Lord be with you. c: And also with you. p: Let us pray. O God of grace and mercy, we give thanks for Your loving kindness shown to Howard and to all Your servants who, having finished their course in faith, now rest from their labors. Grant that we also may be faithful unto death and receive the crown of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. c: Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 25:6-9 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And He will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of His people He will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, that He might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation. p: This is the Word of the Lord. c: Thanks be to God.
CHORAL RESPONSE (Choir) Setting by Thomas E. Lock Let me depart this life Confiding in my Savior; By grace receive my soul That it may live forever; And let my body have A quiet resting place Within a Christian grave; And let it sleep in peace. And on that final day When all the dead are waking, Stretch out Your mighty hand, My deathly slumber breaking. Then let me hear Your voice, Redeem this earthly frame, And bid me to rejoice With those who love Your name. EPISTLE Romans 14:7-9 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. p: This is the Word of the Lord. c: Thanks be to God. Stand VERSE Revelation 1:5-6 c: Alle^luia! * Alle^luia! Jesus Christ is the Firstborn ^of the dead; * to Him be glory and power for^ever. Alle^luia! * Alle^luia! HOLY GOSPEL John 5:24-29 p: The Holy Gospel according to St. John the fifth chapter. c: Glory to You, O Lord. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My Word and believes Him Who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
p: This is the Gospel of the Lord c: Praise to You, O Christ. THE APOSTLES CREED p: God has made us His people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. c: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life + everlasting. Amen.
