OLOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Oakland Avenue, Baulkham Hills South Telephone:9639 4172 Facsimile 9639 0819 www.ololbhills.parra.catholic.edu.au Term 2 Week 2 6th May, 2016 This Sunday is The Ascension of the Lord Year C The Gospel reading for this Sunday is from Luke 24:46-53. While blessing them, he was taken to heaven. Jesus said to his disciples: You see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this. And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high. Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God. New Bishop for Parramatta Yesterday, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed the Most Reverend Vincent Long Van Nguyen O.F.M. Conv. DD, as the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Parramatta. Bishop Long Van Nguyen was born in 1961 in Gia- Kiem, Vietnam. After his ordination to the priesthood on 30 December 1989, Bishop Long went to Rome for further studies and was awarded a licentiate in Christology and Spirituality from the Pontifical Faculty of St Bonaventure. He was elected Superior of Conventual Franciscans in Australia in 2005 and appointed as Assistant General of the same Order and transferred to Rome in 2008. He was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Melbourne on 20 May 2011. Bishop Long is familiar with the western Sydney community, having been parish priest at Our Lady of the Rosary, Kellyville from 1998-2002. His appointment demonstrates the Church s support and understanding of the unique needs of our community. We will welcome Bishop Long at his formal installation in St Patrick s Cathedral, Parramatta, at a date that will be set in the near future. Mass Parents, relatives and friends are invited to our Buddies Mass for Kindergarten and Year 6 on Thursday, 12 th May commencing at 9.15am. Year 6 Family/Parish Mass Our next Family/Parish Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, 15th May, at 9.30am. All families, especially Year 6, are welcome. Mass will be followed by morning tea in the Parish House. Year of Mercy Pope Francis announced an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy year that commenced on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (8 th December 2015) and will conclude on the Solemnity of Christ the King (20 th November 2016). In class, the students have been learning about The Year of Mercy. The reasons for the Year of Mercy, the meaning of the Holy Doors, the prayers, the hymn and the meaning of the logo. Throughout terms 2, 3 and 4, students will examine the values on our school s Values Statement and look at ways we can incorporate these values more fully into our lives. Each grade will promote their selected value for a duration of three weeks. For the next couple of weeks Year 6 will be promoting responsibility. What does it mean to be responsible? How can I be more responsible? The students have constructed a display of a brick wall listing some areas of responsibility. This wall is displayed on the windows outside the library. Over the next couple of months each grade will also contribute to our Mercy Tree located on the large display wall in the open learning area. This tree will grow as we add displays promoting our school values.

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy 2016 The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years 3 and 5. The tests will be conducted across Australia for all students from 10th to 12th May. Tuesday, 10th May - Language Conventions Writing Wednesday, 11th May - Reading Thursday, 12th May - Numeracy Staff Development Day Monday, 30th May will be a professional learning day for the staff. Please make alternative arrangements for your children on this day. Physical Eeducation Teacher Miss Boulos has now taken a position at another school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. She will continue to teach at Our Lady of Lourdes each Monday. We wish her well in her new role. We welcome Miss Wheeler who will be our new PE teacher each Wednesday. OLOL Cricket News Last Friday, our OLOL Cricket Team travelled to St Marys to play the next match in the 2016 Mark Taylor Shield Cricket Competition. Unfortunately, OLOL lost to a very good cricket team from Trinity Catholic Primary School, Kemps Creek. The match was played in great spirit by both schools with many fine displays of cricket and sportsmanship. Well done to all the boys who represented our school in such an excellent manner during our two matches. A huge thank you to Mr Mark Ritchie, Mrs Renee Smith as well as all the players parents for their assistance and support throughout the competition. Mother s Day Stall Thank you to the P&F for organising the Mother s Day Stall. So much effort went into making it so successful. The children really enjoyed selecting a special gift for mum. Our first Sharing Our Story unit in Religion for this term is Servant Leadership. In this unit we will explore many scripture passages from the bible showing leadership. Some of the readings include Moses leading the people, the gift of love and who is the greatest? Each of these readings relate to the qualities required to be a good leader. In class, we have been learning many things about The Year of Mercy. We researched the reasons for the Year of Mercy, the meaning of the Holy Doors, the prayers and the logo. Over the next couple of weeks we will examine the values on our Values Statement and look at ways we can incorporate these values more fully into our everyday lives. The value we will be promoting to the other grades is responsibility. We are creating posters and signs to explain what it means to be responsible and to show how we can be more responsible.

Thank you to our P&F for preparing such a lovely Mother s Day breakfast for all our mums. It was wonderful to see so many attend. I am sure it was appreciated by everyone.
