And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, You should know the LORD. For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already, says the LORD. And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins. Jeremiah 31:34 Season of Ordinary Time Ten o clock July 2, 2017 GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP Prelude: Come, Holy Spirit J.S. Bach Welcome and Announcements Call to Worship: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven [#571] John Goss Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King! Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress. Praise him, still the same as ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless. Alleluia, alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness! Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows. In his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia, alleluia! Widely yet his mercy flows! * Opening Hymns: When Morning Gilds the Sky #372:1-3 We Will Extol You, God and King #562:1,2,4 * God s Greeting Call to Confession WE CONFESS OUR SIN Litany of Confession: Leader: Those who are homeless can be seen in doorways, in bus stations, in parks, and on the roadside. They can be found in abandoned buildings, in shelters, and in parked cars. In the hustle and bustle of our lives, we walk by them, for they are invisible to us.
People: O God, help us slow down our fast-paced lives and give us the strength to open our eyes to those who are homeless. Leader: They are the men, women, and children who, due to unfortunate circumstances, are left without a place to live or food to nourish them. People: O God, you call us to help them as best we are able. Leader: They have stories rich in both joy and sadness to tell. They seem voiceless, but only because we are too involved in our own lives to take the time to listen. People: O God, please help us to find the courage to stop and listen to the stories of your people. Leader: Often they are lonesome and desperate with few people willing to notice or to provide them with the warmth they deserve. People: O God, help us to open our hearts to accept your people whom society has abandoned. Leader: They are your children. They are us. They too have hopes, dreams, desires, and aspirations. People: O God, help us open our minds so we may recognize all on the earth as your people. Leader: These are your people, filled with your goodness although often overlooked. People: O God, open our minds to allow us to see the beauty in all of your people. Leader: They frighten us because we do not know their stories. They frighten us because deep down we know that we could easily become one of them. People: O God, forgive us for our fears and help us to remember that your light shines through them just as brightly as it shines through any of your children. Leader: O God, hear our prayer today for all women and men, boys and girls, who are homeless this day. For those sleeping under bridges or on park benches, in doorways or bus stations. For those who can only find shelter for the night but wander in the daytime. For families broken because they could not afford to pay the rent. For those who have no relatives or friends who can take them in. For those who have no place to keep possessions that remind them who they are. For those who are afraid and homeless. For those who have been betrayed by the social safety net. For all these people, we pray that you will provide shelter, security and hope. We pray for those of us with warm houses and comfortable beds that we not be lulled into complacency and forgetfulness. Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we meet and, through the political means we have, to bring justice and peace to those who are homeless. People: Amen.
Hymn of Assurance: May the Mind of Christ, my Savior #334:1-5 Assurance of Pardon * Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed front cover of hymnal * Hymn of Response: Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love #299:1-4 (Children come forward during last verse) GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Message for Children Cindy Lanning Burch Blessing for Children Leader: People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Congregation: The Lord be with you. Children: And also with you. Congregation: Go in peace. Moment of Gratitude for Family Promise Anthem: You Are Mine I will come to you in the silence, I will lift you from all your fear. You will hear my voice, I claim you as my choice, Be still and know I am here. I am hope for all who are hopeless, I am eyes for all who long to see. In the shadows of the night I will be your light, Come and rest in me. Refrain: Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name. Come and follow me, I will bring you home; I love you and you are mine. I am strength for all the despairing, Healing for the ones who dwell in shame. All the blind will see, the lame will all run free, And all will know my name. I am the Word that leads all to freedom, I am the peace that world cannot give. I will call your names, embracing all your pain, Stand up, now walk, and live! David Haas
