(Lukas 23,43) 4 LUTHERAN PORT ELIZABETH Apr 2014 / May 2014

(Johannes 19,28) Das Fünfte Wort: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen? From the Pastor s Heart The Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross Dear Congregation, dear Friends! During Lent we have been and still are meditating on the seven last words that Jesus said from the Cross on Golgotha. This is an old tradition in the history of the church, designed to help us remember the suffering and death of our Saviour. What is most important here is that we are brought to the realisation that Christ did this for us, for you and for me! We re not just remembering some interesting aspects of ancient history or relating a terrifying story of suffering that happened long ago. We are being told: You are one of those for whom this was done by the Son of God! Therefore it is also good and right that we should take these last words that Jesus uttered from the Cross and apply them to ourselves, to our lives and actions. I invite you to read through them slowly and try to see how each one relates to your life does it resonate with some experience that you have had? Does it speak hope and comfort, or fear and terror to your heart? Remember always, that Christ bore this most terrible suffering for you! 8 LUTHERAN PORT ELIZABETH Apr 2014 / May 2014

The First Word: Father, forgive them, for they don t know what they are doing. (Luke 23,34) The Second Word: I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 23,43) The Third Word: Dear woman, here is your son. (John 19,26) The Fourth Word: I am thirsty. (John 19,28) The Fifth Word: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mark 15,34; Matthew 27,46) The Sixth Word: It is finished! (John 19,30) The Seventh Word: Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands! (Luke 23,46) On the last Wednesday during Lent, i.e. on the 16 April 2014, at 19h30 you are all invited to join us for an Agape Meal with which we will celebrate the Institution of the Lord s Supper. It will also be the last of our Lenten Devotions, which will focus on the Seventh Word from the Cross: Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands! In Communion Christ gives his body, his life into our hands, for us to eat and drink, to nourish us with his eternal life. May this new life become strong in you!
