Stories of Virtue In Everything Give Thanks By Katie Medlen Dishes again, Kelsey grumbled, dragging herself into the kitchen. Why does there always have to be a ton of dishes to do? One of the things Kelsey didn t enjoy much about a big family was the amount of dishes. She liked to work, but dishes? No one could make her like to do dishes. No one. Bible reading every morning was a normal part of Kelsey s daily routine. She liked learning about God s ways, but applying them to her life was a completely different story. This morning she was in 1 Thessalonians chapter five. As she got to verses sixteen through eighteen she stopped to think. They read, Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Rolling over onto her stomach, Kelsey pondered what she had just read. A puzzled look washed across her face. Surely not, she thought. He can t mean to be thankful about dishes. I mean, what is there to be thankful for? Kelsey thought about it for another five minutes, then closed her Bible, prayed, and went about her daily routine. Around lunchtime Kelsey s mom told her it was time to get the dishes done. Immediately, without even thinking about it, Kelsey began complaining in her head for having to do the dishes. After about five minutes she stopped. Wait a minute, she thought. What did I just read this morning? In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God... Kelsey tried ignoring it, but she couldn t. But how was she supposed to give thanks for doing dishes? A couple days later, Kelsey had dish duty again. Before starting she decided to ask God to help her be thankful, because she had no idea how. She wasn t sure what to do at first, but then decided to hum and sing praises to God. Surprisingly, when she had finished, Kelsey found that she had a wonderful time. Doing dishes! No one was going to believe her. Wanting to try again, Kelsey decided to do the dishes the next day even though it wasn t her turn. She failed. Again her grumbling and complaining won. Kelsey went to bed frustrated. Why hadn t it worked? She stayed up late thinking about it. What had she done differently this time? Then Kelsey remembered. She forgot to ask God for help. She should have known better than to try it on her own. Without God, it was impossible for her. Thanking God for the reminder, Kelsey went to sleep, ready to try it again the next day this time the right way. The next afternoon, Kelsey stood in the kitchen surveying the piles of dishes stacked high on every counter. Okay, Lord, she prayed. We both know I can t do this on my own. Please help me. I need your help to have a joyful attitude and be thankful. Grabbing a cloth and filling the sink, Kelsey began singing to God while she worked. This time when she was done, God had the victory. Kelsey was thrilled. She thanked God for winning the victory. Weeks and months went by, and when Kelsey forgot to ask God for help, she failed at being thankful, but when she remembered, the times of doing dishes were a time of sweet fellowship with the Lord. Kelsey learned that giving thanks in everything was impossible by herself, but with God there were great victories to be won. This is a true story of something God has been teaching me in my own life. I hope it will be an encouragement to you, and a reminder of the victories we can win only through God. It is possible to give thanks, even in things like doing the dishes. ~Katie Medlen
Poetry Hallelujah By Hannah Marks When Hallelujah all men sing, "Hallelujah to the king" Then all earth's brightness will grow dim, And every knee will bow to Him, When Jesus sits upon his throne, And takes his pardoned children home, After many years at last, And angel sounds that trumpet blast, All sin will be done away, And in God's kingdom we will stay, Tis' Hallelujah we will sing, Hallelujah to the king. Interesting Books The Lord of the Rings By J.R.R Tolkien Report by Joe Boland Recently I read the three Lord of the Rings books. They were exciting, thrilling, and adventurous. The Lord of the Rings is a battle of good and evil, servant hood and power, light and darkness, Orcs (read the book and learn about them!) and Elves, Men, Hobbits, Ents, Dwarfs and Gandalf. The Lord of the Rings is about a quest that a young hobbit named Frodo, must go on to destroy the ring of power that the dark lord Sauron wants for himself so he can rule all of Middle Earth. To destroy the ring, Frodo must travel to Mount Doom and on the way Frodo meets many different kinds of creatures and friends. The Hobbit is the prelude to the Lord of the Rings and there are a few returning characters such as Bilbo Baggins with Sting, Gandalf the Grey, and even the feared creature; Gollum. J.R.R. Tolkien was a Christian when he wrote The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and many other stories from a Christian world view. I hope you are encouraged to read The Lord of the Rings.
Different kinds of Precipitation Snow, rain, glaze, fog, hail, sleet - these are all Different kinds of Precipitation. Different kinds of precipitation come in different seasons of the year, and different clouds, in different forms. For the next few issues we ll be talking about different kinds of precipitation. Precipitation is very important to the earth because if we didn t have say rain, plants and trees wouldn t be able to grow and rivers and oceans would run dry. But that s why God created the Water Cycle Evaporation The Water Cycle Cloud Body of Water Condensation Snow Snow it s white, fluffy and cold but what is it? Well, many people think that Snow is frozen rain, but it s actually the exact opposite; rain is melted snow. Allow me to explain. Clouds form in the troposphere, a part of the atmosphere that is pretty cold; the average temperature is -112 degrees Fahrenheit. So clouds have ice crystals in them. Well, when the cloud gets full of ice crystals they fall to the ground. On their way down the ice crystals begin to melt, sticking to one another. Closer to the ground they get cold again and there s your snowflake! Every snowflake has six sides (it s true) and snowflakes actually have more in common then they do different! The Water Cycle The Water Cycle (see graph to left) is God s way of recycling water. The water starts in the Body of Water then the sun s heat evaporates the water where the water droplets travel up to the troposphere were the water droplets condense into clouds. Then the clouds get too heavy to hold the water and precipitation falls (Condensation) and fills up bodies of water, where the cycle starts all over again!
