Sir Knight of the Month This month s Sir Knight of the Month is our Trustee 1 year, SK PFN PGK Jim McCracken. Jim has been very active with the Knights since becoming a Knight in 1987. He served on the state KOVAR Board from 1990-2000, as Grand Knight of Mount Vernon Council in 1992-1993 and later as District Deputy, 1995-1996. He was the Faithful Navigator of Potomac Assembly 2004-2005. Jim has been an active member of our Color Corps, marching in parades, for special council functions, as Honor Guard at special SK James McCracken PFN PGK masses and funeral wakes. He has helped the Potomac Assembly provide bagels, pastries, hot dog rolls, and hamburger buns at our Assembly buffets, and for refreshments before and after the GW and St. Patrick s Day Parades. He has provided counsel to your present FN in preparing for meetings. He has helped with the both the St. Louis annual church picnics and the Potomac Assembly annual picnics buying the food, drinks, transporting and setting up the grill for the hot dogs and hamburgers. Jim puts in many hours each week volunteering. He has been a volunteer ombudsman for the Fairfax County Long-Term Care Program, representing clients in facilities who believe that have not been treated correctly. His current volunteer task is with the Bread for Our Brothers ministry, which gathers bakery items from two Panera restaurants in the area, local Safeway stores, and a bakery distributer; and distributing them to shelters, food pantries and other places serving the needy. Jim and his wife JoAnn McCracken have been married 37 years and are the proud parents of three sons, all with the names beginning with the letter J. Jimmy is married and living in Arlington (who has blessed them with a granddaughter & grandson), Jon, who lives in Falls Church, and Joey, also a member of Mount Vernon Council and a Member of the Potomac Assembly. Jim often serves or is one of the Eucharistic Ministers at the daily mass at St. Louis Catholic Church. He and his wife have been active members of the parish since 1978. Jim was born in Huntington, WV. He earned a Bachelors in Management from Florida Atlantic University and a Master Degree in Public Administration from American University. Jim worked training employees and as a program manager in the government. He was employed by the Commerce Department, the Smithsonian nstitution, Treasury, Navy and the National nstitute for Standards and Technology in weights and measures, where he retired in 2003 after 32 years of Government Service. Mount Vernon Council/Potomac Assembly Knight Serving in raq Spec SK Robert (Beau) Kleinworth, a member of Mount Vernon Council # 5598 and Potomac Assembly 2204, is currently serving in Taji, raq, with the 28th nfantry Division of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. His father recently informed us that he has had two close calls. The first was when an improvised explosive device or ED blew his Stryker armored combat vehicle off the road. The second was when he was wounded when a fellow soldier dropped a loaded pistol and it discharged. He is back to duty now. His father asked that we remember Beau in our prayers. Spec SK Beau Kleinworth providing cover for an Army Engineer unit which was inspecting a generator built in Northern Virginia to be installed at a point on the Tigris River north of Taji. 6

Accomplishments in April 2009 20 April, the Officers finalized the remainder of the FY calendar. 27 April, the Assembly approved and forwarded a $ 50.00 to support the District Master Richard G. Head, PSD for the Spring 4th Degree Exemplification Program. Proposed Slate of Officers for Fraternal year 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010 that was developed by the Nominating Committee SK PFN PGK Jim Reilly (Chairman), SK PFN PGK Jim McCracken and SK PFN PGK Ed Jones was presented to the Assembly members at the April 27 Business Meeting. The election of Officers will be held at our May 18th business meeting beginning at 7:30 PM. Before voting on each of the Officer s positions, the Chair will ask the Assembly three times whether there are any other nominations for that position. After this, we will vote for the Officer for that position. There will be a pizza and drinks served after the election/business meeting. 27 April, the assembly approved purchase of a PFN Memorial Plaque capable of displaying a minimum of a 50 name plates. The Assembly approved the Comptroller SK Clifford Conway to investigate the different plaques that are available and to make its purchase. April 28, the Potomac Assembly forwarded an additional $ 53.00 check to the Supreme for the Knights of Columbus ncarnation Dome Fund. April 27, the proposed changes to the Bi-laws was read in at the Business meeting, followed by a brief discussion. Voting will take place at the May 18 Business meeting. April 27, the assembly approved spending $ 100.00 from this year s budget for the June picnic. The balance will come from the FY 2009-2010 budget. A $ 100.00 check was prepared for the initial food items needed for the picnic. Our current budget paid for last year s picnic held on June 2008. 8
Faithful Navigator Message We will soon hold our annual election to select the Officers that will guide our Assembly from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. wish to thank our nominating committee (Chairman SK PFN PGK James Reilly, our Admiral SK PFN PGK Edward Jones and our 1st Year Trustee SK PFN PGK James McCracken) on its selection of a strong slate of Officers for next year. Our Color Corps will be busy this month for the many events that have requested our support. n addition to those shown on the first page, Color Corps members will be needed for our associate Councils final awards banquets. Please help as you are able. We have a little over 20 members that have not paid this years dues. Those that are no longer in our close geographical area should try to join a council and an assembly that is near where you now live. f you need help in doing so, please let me or our Comptroller know and we will do our best to put you in touch with a council and an assembly that will meet your needs. We have sent out two notices for dues for this FY. Unless we hear back from those members who are delinquent on their dues soon, we will pursue placing those members on suspension. The Virginia District Spring 2009 Exemplification will be held in Charlottesville, VA. at the Doubletree Hotel on Saturday 30 May 2009.
