Father Mecca Please remember St. Peter Parish when preparing your will. A legacy to the church eases your tax burden and helps continue the good works of our parish. WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED Louis Simao, Jr. KINDLY REMEMBER THE SICK OF THE PARISH Richard Botelho Marie Carroll Patricia Dean Nubia Dekker Luba Krumseyn Karen Lanigan Jack Maher Teddy Marchione Dylan McBeth Christopher McLaughlin John Palinkas Rick Sarcia Sean Siegle Elias Warchak DANBURY, CT Let me give you an update on the work in the parish hall. I have not spoken about it in several weeks because nothing of any substance happened. But, that has changed. The pace of work has quickened! As I told you, when we looked at the repair to the floor and sheetrock in the hall and the damages to the kitchen cabinets from the October flood, we decided not only to replace what was compromised but to consider how we could upgrade the appearance of our parish hall and kitchen. Naturally, many ideas quickly came to mind. We knew that we could not engage in everything on the wish list, but we desire to present to the parishioners a warmer, a bit more dressy, and a more versatile environment. To date, besides replacing the sheet rock that got wet, this week we have sheet rocked over the cinder block walls where they existed, and the carpenters are framing the metal posts adding some top and bottom molding and a chair rail piece where the bingo folks might push back their chairs and hit the column. When the framing of the posts is completed, the next step will be the installation of the LED light fixtures in place of the fluorescents, including the canisters. Unfortunately, we could not reuse the canisters we had because they are fitted only for a fluorescent bulb. The square LED fixtures will provide the bright light for bingo, meetings, and the times when we need plenty of illumination. The canisters are designed to give us a more pleasing light for other occasions such as parish dinners and events. That is where we stand at present. As for the kitchen, we placed the order for the cabinets this week. I believe they take three weeks for delivery. The ceiling and lights are down in the kitchen. That space is looking pretty forsaken, but come March the kitchen will begin to resurrect. I am asked when we will be able to use the hall and kitchen. There are things on the calendar for March and April. Will we be able to use the space? And, with bingo, of course, we want to resume the games. The parish hall will be usable before the kitchen, as you can surmise, but we do not as yet have a clear sense of when. As Lent approaches, we would like to use the hall for the Friday soup and talk prior to the Stations of the Cross. Let s wait and see what transpires between now and Ash Wednesday. Speaking of which, we have placed the schedule for Ash Wednesday in this bulletin. We like to publish the Mass schedule for special days a minimum of two weeks in advance because not everyone is present weekly and we never know when wintry weather will strike on a weekend. The schedule for Ash Wednesday is the same as it has been for years. We have so many people to accommodate that day. The schedule is the best that we are physically able to do. We are all very aware of the meeting in Rome these last four days to which Pope Francis has called the heads of all the bishops conferences and heads of religious congregations to address the clerical abuse of minors. There is a demand from Catholics in many places that the Church in

Rome does something. I think we would agree that Pope Francis has gone through what we might call a learning curve concerning the enormity of the crimes. He was a bit behind those of us, like us in the U.S., who have been in the epicenters of abuse cases, but he has caught up for sure. I have been praying privately and publicly at daily Mass for him and for the bishops at the conference that the Spirit of God brings them to the right response. I have to say that I was stunned when I read the article in Thursday s New York Times that there are bishops and bishops conferences in parts of the world who do not acknowledge abuse or who think the problem is overstated or particular to western societies. From where we stand, such an attitude is incredulous. The challenge for the Pope to move a world-wide body along to embrace policies protecting minors and standards of reporting and accountability is great. Pray for the Pope. His burden is heavy. -Fr. Music Notes: Introit Chant For those of you attending the Sunday, 10:30 a.m. Mass, you may have noticed that the choir has been singing the Introit (or Entrance) chant. The Introit, which consists of an Antiphon sung by the full choir alternating with psalm verses sung by a smaller group, has been chanted at the beginning of the Eucharistic liturgy since early medieval times. Although it has now become common for our liturgies to begin with a hymn, hymns are actually a relatively recent addition. At St. Peter, we are using both the introit chant followed by the entrance hymn. According to the Church documents, the purpose of the introit chant is to open the celebration, foster the unity of those gathered, and introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgy. You may have also noticed that we have not announced the entrance hymn over the last few weeks. I personally like the liturgical flow of the introit chant being immediately followed by the introduction of the entrance hymen. Please note, however, that hymn numbers can easily be found either in the worship leaflet or on the hymn board near the organ.
