Metro Rail to build elevated stations to cut cost As per the modified plan of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL), some of the planned underground stations in Phase-2 will be constructed as elevated stations to cut cost. It has planned to begin construction on a 52-km stretch with 57 stations before the end of the year. Three underground stations that may be built parallel to the existing stations on Phase-1 may be at a depth of 29m. This means tunnels linking the stations may be under the existing ones. Metro rail officials said Thousand Lights, Kilpauk Medical College and Nandanam, built at a depth of 18m, will have parallel stations in Phase-2. But the alignment in Phase-2 is such that these new stations will not be built under the same road where the existing stations are functioning. The stations on Phase-1 and 2 that run parallel will be linked through a walkway to make it convenient for commuters to switch corridors, an official said. Thirumangalam metro station, which is part of Corridor-3 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, is to be built as an elevated station on Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will fund 50% of the Rs. 4,000 crores Phase-2 project. They have appealed to the authorities to evict the encroachers from the temple tank. Offers free assistance to get benefits under govt. schemes G. A. Prithivi (resident of T. Nagar) helps residents to obtain new gas connections under PM Ujjwala Scheme and provides assistance for availing of benefits under various Central Govt. schemes for needy families. Persons needing help may call him in 74010 31764. Discourse on Gita today Under the auspices of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (5, Maharaja Santhanam Salai, T. Nagar), Swami Satyaprabhananda will give a discourse on Bhagavad Gita in Tamil at 5.30 p.m, on Sunday, Jan. 6 in the Ashram s premises. All are welcome. For more details, call 2814 3896. Quick response to online civic complaints Sir, Earlier we used to lodge civic complaints by calling the local office in Pondy Bazaar or visiting that office and writing them in a register. Thereafter, numerous reminders were necessary to get the problem rectified. Due to lack of time, I made the last two complaints online in the Corporation website. There was an instant email giving the reference number of the complaint and whom to contact in case of delay. There was also an SMS acknowledgment. To my pleasant surprise, the problem was solved within 2 hours. I understand that with regard to online complaints, there is continuous monitoring with update by the higher officials. It therefore seems worthwhile to lodge complaints online for quick action. P. K. Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi St, T. Nagar, 98402 93321 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ordinary MTC services skip stops Sir, I wish to bring to the attention of the MTC authorities that the ordinary services introduced on routes 11H and 49A do not halt at all the stops in K. K. Nagar. Ordinary services need to halt at all stops as the fare is lower for the benefit of underprivileged commuters. Further, the conductors refuse to issue tickets for the stops where Express / Deluxe services of 11H and 49A do not stop, namely Padma Seshadri School, Pondicherry Guest House in both directions stating that there are no instructions to halt at these stops. I request the MTC authorities to issue instructions to the crew manning ordinary services to halt at all the stops. V. Jayarajan, K. K. Nagar Plastic ban should have been implemented in phased manner Sir, This refers to the govt. order on banning of plastics and its variants with effect from Jan. 1. While the ban is welcome considering its ill-effects on the environment, the preparatory work towards the same could have been made by the Chennai Corporation months ahead of the ban involving both the public and the traders. Meetings should have been held to explain the varieties of plastics that are banned and how these should be disposed of. The traders should have been told to phase out the plastic products as a prelude to the ban. Such a measure would have sent out the message that the ban is inevitable and everyone should take serious note of the same. In so monitoring the traders, further flow of plastic bags could have been controlled, and the transition would have been smoother. Now there is a complete pell-mell. The other day, when I sought clarification on the issue from the Area Engineer of Ward 136, he stated that the Corporation will not depute any personnel to collect the plastic items from residents on door-todoor basis and that residents should dump the banned plastics in the bins placed in the Ward Office located in Masilamani Street, T. Nagar. That said, the residents are still unclear as to which items of plastic are banned. It must be stated that the competition to sell items like vegetables and provisions has given a big push to the proliferation of plastics. - V S Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Plea for Varuna Japam Sir, Chennai city did not receive rains this year and we are going to face acute water shortage. I appeal to all Mutts, Mandapams and temple authorities to arrange for collective Varuna Japam to appeal to the Rain God to bless us with rain immediately. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar With monsoon failing, city stares at impending water crisis Sir, The monsoon has again failed this season and the reservoirs supplying water to the city have very low storage compared to last year. The situation is critical and the govt. has to take immediate steps for a contingency plan. Otherwise, private tanker operators will fleece the residents by drawing water illegally and supplying it at exorbitant prices. Rampant and mindless urbanization is the primary cause as most of the city s lakes have been converted into real estate. The govt. should identify more sources for natural storage of water. N. Rajagopalan, West Mambalam Appeal for bus stop near Kodambakkam flyover Sir, MTC buses plying from T. Nagar to Thiruverkadu via Vadapalani, Koyembedu and Mangadu, have halts at Panagal Park, Bharathi Nagar and then Liberty in this neighbourhood. As many commuters go to Mahalingapuram after getting down at Bharathi Nagar, I appeal to MTC to consider a stop just ahead of the turning of Kodambakkam bridge. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
