New & Noteworthy SECOND ANNUAL SUMMER RETREAT A GOOD LIFE Begins Sunday, July 26th at 7:00pm Summer is a great time of year for retreat; for stepping back from the business and busy-ness of everyday life in order to focus on our personal relationship with Christ and His Church. Unfortunately, few among us have an opportunity to leave work, family, and friends for a real retreat from the world. For this reason, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport is happy to announce its Second Annual Summer Retreat! Beginning on Sunday, July 26th and concluding on Friday, July 31st, all are invited to join Father Jim and Cliff Garvey for a unique chance to experience the peace and spiritual renewal of a week-long retreat without leaving home! Our retreat will be based on Robert Benson s book, A Good Life, which offers a modern interpretation of the ancient rule of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the founder of western monasticism. This little gem of a book provides practical wisdom for achieving a real balance in our increasingly busy lives through work, rest, prayer, and community. Each evening of our retreat will begin promptly at 7:00pm in Saint Anthony Chapel with Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. After that, Father Jim and Cliff will lead the group in a spiritual exercise, discussion, and faith sharing. We will conclude our sessions at 8:30pm with Night Prayer. Between retreat sessions, participants will be asked to read and reflect on five selections from Benson s book (approximately 25 pages each day). Also, during each day of the retreat, Saint Anthony Chapel will open at 12:00pm for silent personal prayer and study. If you feel called to join us for each session of the summer retreat, please contact Cliff Garvey at cgarvey@ccgronline.com or 978-281- 4820. A donation of $25.00 is requested from those who can afford it. Copies of the book, along with coffee, tea, and cold water, will be provided. Please join us! All are welcome to join us on retreat! ASSISI PROJECT ONLINE My Friend, Frank (Parts I & II) This year, as it welcomes new members from the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport, the Assisi Project is returning to its beginnings by focusing on the early life and conversion of Saint Francis of Assisi. All are welcome to join us online at assisiproject.com for two new reflections about the life and times of Saint Francis of Assisi: My Friend, Frank (Parts I & II). For more information about the Assisi Project, please visit our website, see Father Jim before or after Mass, or contact Cliff Garvey at 978-281-4820 or cgarvey@ccgronline.com. Please join us! All are welcome! Saint Francis, pray for us! Our New Worship Schedule PLEASE JOIN US! ALL ARE WELCOME! In Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish, the celebration of Mass is the source and summit of our community s joy and the center of our life of prayer, fellowship, and service. Regardless of where we might worship, the Holy Eucharist brings God s consolation, love, and mercy into our midst; it brings the Real Presence of Jesus Christ into our lives and hearts! All are welcome to join us for Mass and to participate in Holy Communion in accordance with their conscience and the teachings of Catholic Church. Beginning during the weekend of Saturday, May 30th and Sunday, May 31st, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport will celebrate Mass according to the following schedule: Saturday Vigil Masses 4:00pm 6:00pm Sunday Masses 7:00am 8:15am Saint Joachim Church 10:00am 11:45am 5:00pm (English & Portuguese) Weekday Masses Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:00am Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00am Saint Joachim Church Saturday at 8:00am Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation Saturday at 3:00pm Also By Appointment If you have questions about our new worship schedule, please contact Father Jim by phone or email. Thank you! THE HOLY ROSARY Monday Through Saturday After Mass All are invited to join us every morning after Daily Mass in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport as we pray the Holy Rosary. By praying the Rosary, we grow closer to our Risen Lord by meditating on mysteries of his life, death, and resurrection; and we grow closer to our Blessed Mother by asking for her intercession for ourselves, our parishes, and the whole world. June 21, 2015 Prayers for Father s Day A PRAYER FOR FATHERS We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation: May they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family, and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering: May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice: May they know that God guides them and blesses their work among us. We pray for the souls of our deceased fathers, grandfathers, and godfathers who are no longer with us but live forever in memory and still nourish us with their love: May God bless them with his heavenly grace. Amen. A PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH, PATRON OF FATHERS By Pope Saint John XXIII Saint Joseph, guardian of Jesus and chaste husband of Mary, you passed your life in loving fulfillment of duty. You supported the Holy Family of Nazareth with the work of your hands. We pray that you will protect those who call to you. You know their aspirations, hardships, and hopes. They look to you because they know that you will understand and protect them. You also knew trial, hard work, and weariness. But amid the worries of life, your soul was full of deep peace and sang out with joy through intimacy with God s Son, who was entrusted to you and to Blessed Mother Mary. Assure those you protect that they do not labor alone. Teach them to find Jesus near them and to watch over him faithfully as you have done. We make this prayer through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen. Saint Joseph, Patron of Fathers, pray for us! On this Father s Day Weekend, let us take a moment to dedicate a beautiful thought and a prayer for all fathers. In trusting them to Saint Joseph and to the Mother of Jesus, let us pray for our mothers and all fathers! Amen! Our Pastor s Message A FATHER S DAY REFLECTION During my recent vacation with family and friends in the Azores, I thought a lot about fatherhood. Perhaps it was because my dad was traveling with me and we visited the village where he was born, raised, and married my mother. Perhaps it was because I have entered a new decade of life by celebrating my fortieth birthday. Perhaps it was because I just completed one year as a pastor, a ministry that calls me to serve as a spiritual father to more than four thousand families. Or perhaps it was some combination of all of these factors. In any case, I have been thinking a great deal lately about fatherhood. A friend recently asked me to describe my dad with just three words. After a quick prayer and a long pause, I responded that my dad is prayerful, hardworking, and trustworthy. As a young man, just married, my dad immigrated to the United States from São Miguel Island in the Azores in search of a better life. He and my mom found that better life, but the work was hard and the struggle was long. He found a job, learned English, bought a home, raised three children, and achieved his dreams. Nearly two decades after graduating from college and leaving home for the seminary, I continue to marvel at how my dad managed to balance the demands of work and family. But he did it with great courage and perseverance. As a younger man, he could be fiery in temperament and temper. But now, in his early seventies and after undergoing a life-changing Cursillo experience, my dad s inner calm and spiritual peace fills our family home and is a real blessing to everyone who knows him. For those who know me well, they know that I am very close to my mom. We are much alike in demeanor, energy, and personality. But lately, given the challenging and rewarding work of parish ministry, I have begun to think more about my dad and how he might handle this issue or that problem. I have begun to appreciate his prayerfulness, his work ethic, and his honesty like never before. And I have begun to say a silent prayer of thanksgiving each and every time that I see my dad or think about all that he has done for me, my mom, and my siblings. My father is fond of saying, That s it! as a way of ending a conversation about almost any topic. This Father s Day, please join me in praying for our fathers, grandfathers, and godfathers (both living and deceased). Let us give thanks for their sacrifice, their hard work, and their prayers for us as we grew and went our own way in life. And this Father s Day, let us always remember to give God thanks for those fathers and father-figures in our lives who have loved us, prayed for us, and worked for a better world. Happy Father s Day, Dad! That s it! Peace and blessings to all, Father Jim 3

BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE Throughout this year, the Knights of Columbus of Gloucester & Rockport (Council 215) is promoting an international initiative to build and strengthen the domestic church called the Family Fully Alive. As the first teachers of their children in all things including faith, parents and grandparents are asked to talk with their children and grandchildren about God, the Good News of the Risen Lord, and a life of faith in the Catholic Church. This month, our focus is on the New Evangelization. We are all called to holiness and we know that through witness, holiness leads to experiencing God s activity in our lives and in the world. Therefore, all are encouraged to share their faith with family and friends. Invite a friend or family member to Mass; talk about your faith over a good meal; engage in an act of charity or prayer for another person; or volunteer for your parish or a local charity. For more information about the Family Fully Alive, please visit kofc.org/un/en/domestic-church or contact Peter Brau at grandknight@kofc215.com. Thank you! June 21, 2015 Prayer, Fellowship & Service PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Sacrament of the Sick Sacrament of Holy Communion Is there anyone sick among you? This question, found in the New Testament s Letter of Saint James (James 5:14), serves as an invitation for the sick and those who care for them to call upon the priests of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. All parishioners are welcome to ask for prayer and for the Sacrament of the Sick before surgery or when diagnosed with a serious illness. This sacrament should not be regarded as Last Rites but as a powerful instrument of the Lord s healing presence. If you or a loved one would like to receive the Sacrament of the Sick or the Sacrament of Holy Communion at home (due to age, illnes, or disability), please contact Anna Matturro at 978-281-4820 or annamatturro@verizon.net.
