From The Pastor wrecks from less confident people." A Ticking Time Bomb! [Adapted from NCR article by Dennis Coday, editor] It isn't a victory and it isn't a gift. It is a ticking time bomb that will blow up our social safety net and leave hundreds of millions of Americans without a government they can look to for protection from unbridled corporate greed. This is what Dennis Coday, the editor of NCR has to say about the newly signed Tax Bill. He says it is ushering in a new Gilded Age, the huge shift of national resources away from the vast majority of Americans and toward the richest of the rich. The president has marketed the bill on behalf of the right wing of the Republican Party which has been fighting for this for a very long time. Boston College historian Heather Cox Richardson wrote: "There was always a rump group of Republicans who loathed the idea that they could not run their businesses without check." A major check was issued in the 1986 pastoral letter of the U.S. bishops, "Economic Justice for All," which explores "the moral dimensions of economic activity." While recognizing the benefits of a market economy, the letter also issues substantial warnings about unbridled capitalism and clearly cautions against the highly individualistic notions of freedom espoused by libertarians. Much more is at stake here than just tax cuts. What we are seeing is a business-oriented remake of American governance. As deficits rise, budget cuts are inevitable. And very soon we will be hearing about "welfare reform," or cuts to programs that make it possible for poor working families to afford food, housing, health care, and other basic needs. Deep cuts will also come to Medicaid, Medicare and basic assistance programs. Listen for arguments like this one: "It will purge the rottenness out of the system. High cost of living and high living will come down. People will work harder, live a more moral life. Values will be adjusted, and enterprising people will pick up the But don t be fooled. Americans shouldn't believe that they will be untouched by these "reforms." They may get to double their standard deductions and claim a couple hundred dollars more for dependents, but ultimately they will be losing government investments in education and training programs, transportation and other infrastructure, medical research, and child and elder care. These and similar social investments that benefit nearly all Americans are pegged for cuts in budget resolutions proposed in Congress in October. And there is much, much more. The news media has already announced bans on uses of hazardous chemicals. Businessmen don't want their businesses encumbered by environmental, labor and health regulations. So we should get ready for more dangerous workplaces and environmental degradation. What we are seeing is an ideological shift in the dominant view of what government should do. Catholics who have followed the social justice gospel of the Church since Leo XIII, who believe government's highest purpose is to support and advance the common good, should be hearing alarm bells. Such Catholics will be no doubt be falsely accused of partisan politics when they stand with those whose voices are drowned out of the dominant conversation. But at the urging of the Holy Spirit, speak we must, as Isaiah (61:1-21, 11) had done so long ago: [God] has sent [us] to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the LORD and a day of vindication by our God.... As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise spring up before all the nations. 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Not Too Late to Turn in Your Pledge Use the pledge brochure available at the Church doors & return it in the collection basket or church office. Its purpose is to pass on to future generations the story of the Exodus, the central event in Jewish history. As Christians, our own spiritual roots are also connected to this meal since it was celebrated by Jesus at the Last Supper when he instituted the Eucharist, thus passing on and re-enacting the central event of Christianity the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
