Preface Çré Çré Guru-Gauräìga jayataù It is with great fortune and transcendental pleasure that we now present this English rendition of Tattva-viveka, a concise masterpiece revealed by His Divine Grace Çréla Bhaktivinode Öhäkur in 1893. The book consists of two chapters, called as Realization of Eternity and Realization of Eternal Consciousness. Chapter One contains thirty-three Sanskrit verses, and Chapter Two contains fifteen. Of the total forty-eight, thirty-eight verses contain purports or commentaries, some of which are quite extensive. The original commentaries were in Bengali. The treatise seeks to awaken higher intelligence within its reader. Human beings can be divided in many ways, and one such division is those who are actually awakened to spiritual reality (udita-viveka) and those who are still asleep to it (anudita-viveka). The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Çré Kåñëa, in Bhagavad-gétä, describes the fully-realized and devoted sage as one who is sthita-prajïa. His higher intelligence is fixed in the Absolute Truth at all times and in all circumstances. To have viveka awakened is a stage previous to sthita-prajïa, but it is, nonetheless, both an important and essential development. The Öhäkur was a fully devoted representative of the most recent incarnation of the Supreme Lord, Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, and he glorifies Him in the opening verses of each chapter. This edition also contains unique addenda in the form of four appendices, which cover topics directly relevant to the subject matter discussed. Appendix Four is a biographical sketch of the author s life and precepts. Two previous translations of this important work were consulted in order to perfect this particular edition. Tattva-viveka is a special dispensation for the intellectual seeker of the Absolute, be he merely inquisitive or actually already learned to some extent. It meets a need for satisfying the spiritual hunger of a keen intelligence, one that will not accept anything 7

less than a comprehensive and correct understanding of who we are, why we are forced to suffer, what is this universe, and what is our relationship with material nature. The book is surprisingly thorough and concise at the same time; indeed, it can be read cover-to-cover in one sitting. It was designed by the Öhäkur to not only answer the abovementioned inquiries concerning the meaning of life but was also tailored to transform an intelligent, good, and diligent man into a devoted sage, eligible to realize the Absolute Truth in this lifetime. If our translations and appendices help to realize that goal of Çréla Bhaktivinode for even one Westerner then we shall consider this attempt successful in every way, shape, and form. OM TAT SAT Kailäsa Candra däsa Vaiñëava Foundation, editor Completed July 14, 2011 on Guru-Pürëimä 8

The fundamental mysteries of the Vedic philosophical conclusions are unlocked for the first time in this English rendition of Çréla Bhaktivinode Öhäkur s concise treatise on the Absolute Truth, Tattva-viveka. It consists of two chapters. In the book, he points out that the conditioned soul espouses and is subjected to a great variety of speculative explanations concerning the ontological truths of existence. All of these are flawed, and the Öhäkur points out just how they are so. However, this Tattvaviveka gives us real hope that the Absolute Truth can indeed be realized by any sincere and serious person in this lifetime. As a representative of that Supreme Reality, Öhäkur Bhaktivinode, a fully self-realized and God-realized soul, briefly touches upon the philosophies of the West. He starts with the prominent Greek thinkers, and includes the Roman poet-philosopher, Lucretius. He then skips to the Age of Enlightenment and discusses Hume and Von Holbach, along with others. He culminates this review with an analysis of modern-day philosophers and philosophies, such as Huxley, Schopenhauer, Mill, and Auguste Comte. He goes into special detail in relation to Positivism. In Tattva-viveka, Bhaktivinode Öhäkur also discusses, sometimes in detail, Eastern philosophies such as Çäìkhya, Nyäya, Vaiçeñika, Karmamimäàsa, and Pätanjala-Yoga. There are expositions on Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, and Christianity, as well. Finally, the Monist philosophy is considered. In the second chapter, Çréla Bhaktivinode Öhäkur s sums up everything by explaining the Absolute Truth from the perspective of the realized souls, who, wherever they are living in time and space either on this planet, this universe, or in the spiritual world itself are always in complete and perfect agreement.
