T HE C ORNER 3 January 13, 2019 BAPTISM OF THE LORD As we come to celebrate the Lord s Baptism this weekend, we can take time to reflect on baptism itself. Each time a baby is baptized, we show that we brought forth a life that God has chosen to give us. We welcome this baby with open arms--a new life that shows that his or her parents said yes to life. Baptism in our church gives us the responsibility to care of all life. With this in mind, on January 18, we will have a group of young adults going to the March for Life in Washington, DC. If you can not make it to that march, there will be a mini march here in Cincinnati. People will be meeting on the sidewalk at Planned Parenthood on Auburn Ave. at 1 PM. This is a great way to show your testament and commitment to the pro-life movement. Amen? Amen! St. Margaret-St. John Chili Cook-Off Save the date of Jan. 26 at 5:30 PM for this annual culinary competition. Everyone is invited to participate or to just stop by to sample the entrees. Please contact Mary Mathers for information at 271-0856. YOUNG ADULT BLESSED BRUNCH January 19, 9:30 AM Brunch in St. Cecilia Commons. Contact Sarah Rose at sbort@stceciliacincinnati.org for details. Patriarch Men Do you find yourself desiring to better love your wife and children and lead them on the path of holiness? Are you looking for support and friendship among other men as you struggle to live your vocation as husband and father? Join men from around the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for the launch of PATRIARCH Cincinnati on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 6:30 8:30 p.m. at The Athenaeum of Ohio. Fr. John Ignatius, founder of the Servants of Christ Jesus in Denver, CO will explain his revolutionary ministry forming husbands and fathers in the virtues of the Old Testament Patriarchs. PATRIARCH has borne abundant fruit in the lives of men in Denver and around the country. No RSVP is necessary. For more information, contact the Marriage & Family Life Office at familylife@catholiccincinnati.org or 421-3131, ext. 2621. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. HOW TO LIVE OUT THE MESSAGE OF CHRISTMAS IN THE NEW YEAR? Catholic FAQs Why does the Catholic Church baptize infants? The Church received from the apostles the tradition of giving baptism even to infants. The apostles, to whom were committed the secrets of the divine sacraments, knew there are in everyone innate strains of [original] sin, which must be washed away through water and the Spirit (Commentaries on Romans 5:9 [A.D. 248]). Origen Baptize first the children, and if they can speak for themselves let them do so. Otherwise, let their parents or other relatives speak for them (The Apostolic Tradition 21:16 [A.D. 215]). Matthew 28:19 33 Days to Morning Glory A 6-week retreat featuring Fr. Michael Gaitley Thursdays from February 14, 2019 - March 25, 2019 12:30-2PM in the rectory meeting space at St. Margaret- St. John and facilitated by seminarian Louis Jacquemin 7-8:30 PM in the St. Cecilia Commons and facilitated by Fr. Jacob Willig From Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, author of the bestselling book Consoling the Heart of Jesus, comes an extraordinary 33-day journey to Marian consecration. Featuring the teachings of four giants of Marian spirituality St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and Pope St. John Paul II Fr. Gaitley shows how simple it is to put Marian devotion into practice. People s lives today are often busy and challenging. Stage 1 of the Hearts Afire parish-based program offers individuals a quick and easy way to withdraw from the demands of daily life and enter into a peaceful interior reflection on their relationship with Christ in the context of Marian devotion. We begin with the Immaculate Heart because Mary leads us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The end result is that, by learning to entrust ourselves to the Mother of Our Lord, we can discover a transforming trust in Jesus himself. ST. ANTHONY PARISH 7 Bringing peace is central to the mission of Christ s disciples. That peace is offered to all those men and women who long for peace amid the tragedies and violence that mark human history. The house of which Jesus speaks is every family, community, country and continent, in all their diversity and history. It is first and foremost each individual person, without distinction or discrimination. But it is also our common home : the world in which God has placed us and which we are called to care for and cultivate. So, let this be my greeting at the beginning of the New Year: Peace be to this house!. [message of Pope Francis for World Day of Peace, 2019] 19th Annual Rev. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Jan 18-25 This week of prayer begins on the feast of the Chair of St. Peter and concludes on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. In our fragmented, contentious world, it is important for the followers of Christ to seek unity, to heal the brokenness of our world. Take home one of the prayer cards in the pews and join your prayers for healing and unity with other people around the world. TWINNING NEWS Our Dominican friends were not able to visit Cincinnati in October as previously planned. We are hoping they can visit in 2019 and we will also be determining if there is any interest from our parish in visiting Dominica. The tools we collected last year are waiting in a warehouse in Wisconsin for free transport to Dominica via the US Air Force. We are at the mercy of the Air Force for the timing of transports because it is dependent on space remaining after higher priority government shipments. There are still many houses in our twinning parish needing extensive repairs since Hurricane Maria in September of 2017. Two St. Anthony parishioners, Ken and Diane McPhillips, will travel to our twinning parish in January as volunteers with the organization, Good News Project. The McPhillips will join about eight other volunteers for a 2-week experience repairing and building houses. We pray for success in their endeavors as they enjoy the beautiful weather! COMMUNION MINISTRY TO RETIREMENT FACILITIES Did you know that St. Anthony/St. Margaret St. John Parish provides Communion Service at the Barrington in Oakley every Sunday at 10:40 am? This is a combined ministry with volunteers Roger & Nancy Johannigman, Carol & Jim Carlin & Bob Fitzgerald from St. Anthony and Mary Mathers & Maureen Bates from St. Margaret St. John. Our volunteers from St. Margaret St. John Parish, John Heitker, John Mullan, Elaine Best & Mary Mathers, also bring Communion on Thursdays to the residents of Indiansprings in Oakley. These are both very rewarding ministries and we would welcome new volunteers. Training can be provided as needed. Please call the parish office of either St. Margaret St. John or St. Anthony Parish if you would like more information or would like to join us in this important ministry.
