As Catholics, we know that God created us male and female for a reason: our bodies, psyches, and biochemistry differ because our vocations differ. Only by rediscovering our identity as either male or female can we discover the gift of our lives and the genuine happiness that comes from living according to either the masculine or the feminine mode of loving. Meet and Greet with desserts afterwards. The presentation will be followed by a brief session about Aquinas College. October Committee- Tina (Tracy) Vonderheide(chair), Kathy Worman, Geannine Kessler, Shauna Curry, Patty Kessler, Jessica Closson, Connie Rosine October 5 & 6, 2013 Reflection for this weekend: Beloved: I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. With these words St. Paul encourages Timothy, in our second reading this weekend, to witness to the gospel of Christ no matter the hardship it requires. It is simply too powerful to be ashamed of or to ignore. We have heard a lot of talk in the Church the last few years about the New Evangelization. We are being asked to invite a world that has become increasingly secularized and cynical to take another look at the Faith. In the Gospel for today The apostles said to the Lord, increase our faith. This is a good prayer request for us. Faith is a gift from God. Even a small amount can do powerful things according to Jesus in today s Gospel. In the New Evangelization we are asked to meet the world where it s at and help it find the beauty of faith in Jesus Christ. The best witness is, of course, an authentic faith life of our own. Lord, increase our faith. None of us is a perfect witness to Jesus Christ but when I see someone giving the Lord what they have, it is definitely inspiring. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord. Give what you have. The Cross: There is no Christianity without the cross. As Catholics it enters every part of our life both in symbol and reality. Our difficulties cause us to rely more on God. Our struggles bring us closer to Christ Jesus. We even sign ourselves with the sign of the cross recalling the mark of our redemption from the love of the Trinity. Every one of our three churches is marked with a cross at its highest point. It s a reminder to us of our faith and a beacon to the world. I am reminded of this as the new copper cross goes up on the steeple of St. Anthony. Looking from there I can see the cross on the hospital, on Sacred Heart, and on St. Francis in Teutopolis. Standing out on the horizon is also The Cross by the interstates. The Cross has been a beacon of evangelization and hope for many. Volunteers at the cross represent 50 churches in a 30 mile radius of Effingham. It has been highlighted in many print media as well. The cross in its many representations across Effingham is a constant symbol to us of the gospel we are called to preach. The cross is a message of God s love for us. Jesus died on a cross and rose from the dead so that we could live with Him for eternity. Only Jesus can save us. The cross is a constant reminder of that truth. Hold it high and with great respect in your life. In Christ, Fr.Hoefler
