Christ Church CHART 1355 Northern Boulevard Manhasset, NY 11030 Letter from the Rector April 1, 2011 Dear Friends, Lent is halfway over as we send out our April Chart. We hope that you are having a blessed Lenten season and that the disciplines that you have taken on during Lent have helped you enhance your relationship with God, healed any broken relationships in you lives and moved you toward the blessings of Easter tide. In this edition of the Chart there is information about Holy Week and Easter, the Episcopal Charities Appeal and a special program entitled, Women and Girls: Created in the image of God. This program will be held at the Mercer school of Theology and the Cathedral of the Incarnation on Saturday, April 30. I highly commend this program to you and hope many will attend. The Women s Commission of the Diocese of Long Island is developing many important ministries for women including Beijing prayer circles in support of the spiritual and emotional lives of women throughout the church. We hope this new aspect of women s ministry will appeal to many women in our parish. I also wish to update the parish about the care givers circle which has been started as a joint program of Christ Church and the Junior League of Long Island. Care giver groups meet on Wednesday in the early afternoon and in the evening. If you are a caregiver or know caregivers in the community who need support, please feel free to call Lisa Currie at 627-1480 or Pattie Gallatin at 484-9484 for further information. "I have generally tried to stay away from topics in sermons and the Chart that might appear to be political. However, I would like to at least introduce the following topic to you. It seems to me that the events in the North African and Arab countries demonstrate that the foreign policy of the Western nations has not served anyone well by being pragmatic to the exclusion of promoting a broader sense of ethics. If justice, fairness and democracy are core American (and Western) values, it is interesting to see how singularly those values have been sublimated to the pragmatic desire for the free flow of oil and an open Suez Canal in foreign policy. By not supporting open societies and the development of civil society, the West has helped to bring a whole region to the brink of uncertain anarchy. And where has the voice of the church been through all of this? Silent, I am afraid. There is much to ponder in these matters." Finally, I hope that our long winter and early spring, which has been abnormally cold and wet, will swiftly pass into the joys of new birth and spring time and that we will all be blessed in the glories of new creation. This comes with my best wishes. Sincerely, The Very Rev d David B. Lowry

Parish Notes: Confirmation Classes Preparation for Confirmation classes are scheduled at 11:30am on the following Sundays April 10, 17 (Palm Sunday), May 1, 8. Episcopal Charities Appeal Christ Church has not participated in Episcopal Charities Annual Appeal for a number of years. With a new Bishop and enhanced management of Episcopal Charities it is a good time for Christ Church to support Episcopal Charities in a robust way. We are in the midst of the Annual Episcopal Charities Appeal and the goal for Christ Church is $8,000. We have already raised half of that amount. We hope that all our families will participate in some way in Episcopal Charities. A brochure and giving envelope for Episcopal Charities are in the Church for your convenience. You may contribute by check, credit card (including designation of a monthly amount to be charged to your credit card). We hope to complete the drive for Episcopal Charities by Palm Sunday. Please prayerfully consider how you can support how you can support Episcopal Charities in the Diocese of Long Island. Women & Girls Created in the image of God. On Saturday April 30, 2011 the Women s Commission of the Diocese of Long Island will sponsor a program for women, girls and men as well to look thoughtfully at Women and Girls in society today. Scripture and the traditions of the church have a powerful and important message about women and girls in the image of God s grace and love. This program is highly commended to all of us. The cost is only $15 for adults and $10 for young people and this includes lunch. Information and registration on line at: http://tinyurl.com/69yxrzn or download registration from the Diocesan website and mail with payment to arrive no later than April 24 to: The Women s Commission c/o George Mercer Jr. Memorial School of Theology 65 Fourth Street Garden City, NY 11530 RSVP or Questions krobey1@gmail.com or hkress@optonline.net Holy Week & Easter at Christ Church The most holy week of the church year begins with Palm Sunday on April 17. We will have our regular services at 8:00am, 10:00am and 6:00pm. Palms will be distributed at all services and we will have the reading of the Passion Gospel. Holy week, on Monday through Wednesday we will have our regular schedule of services which includes Morning Prayer at 8:45 am and Evening Prayer at 5:45pm daily and on Wednesday morning there is a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 10:00am. On Thursday, which is known as Maundy Thursday, we will have in addition to Morning Prayer celebrations of the Holy Eucharist at 10:00am and 7:30pm. At the evening service the Washing of the Feet and the Procession of the Blessed Bread and Wine to the Altar of Repose in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. On Good Friday, we will have Morning Prayer at 8:45am and the church will remain open for prayer and meditation until 3:00pm.
