Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Notes from the Pastor Being Present: What Technology Cannot Replace Priests (and all faithful) present in the world of digital communications should be less notable for their media savvy than for their priestly heart, their closeness to Christ. -Pope Benedict XVI The media do nothing by themselves; they are instruments, tools, used as people choose to use them. In reflecting upon the means of social communication, we must face honestly the most essential question raised by technological progress: whether, as a result of it, the human person. is becoming truly better, that is to say more mature spiritually, more aware of the dignity of his humanity, more responsible, more open to others, especially the neediest and the weakest, and readier to give and to aid all.. (Pope John Paul II Redemptor Hominis, 15) Christians Can Bring a Soul into the Fabric of the Online World In an ever changing world where updated software and upgraded hardware is used to improve the world, it is good to remember that one thing never changes. While God is not flashy or loud and will not poke you when you have not checked in with Him for some time, He is always there. No matter where you are, God desires to be present in your life. God wants to commune with you and others through you. As we use the latest technology in communication, one thing is certain, we will never waste time trying to seek a personal relationship with the Lord. Connection to Him is the one and only constant. Our relationship with God will never depend on a signal, a service provider, or a monthly payment. Christ will never give us or the world a message that is obsolete. Adapted from Our Sunday Visitor by Jennifer Fulwiler.

February 4, 2018 w this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Page 3 T M S. J A P J,,,. TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). Psalm Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. Rev. James Field HINDSIGHT God s presence is not discerned at the time when it is upon us, but afterwards, when we look back. John Henry Newman

St. Mark tells us that when Jesus entered the house of Simon (Peter) and Andrew, He healed Simon s mother-inlaw who was suffering with a fever. Then later that evening He healed many who were ill or possessed by demons. Following His miraculous healing activities, Jesus went off to a deserted place where he prayed. In doing His Father s will by healing and praying, Jesus set a great example for us. When we pray, we are given the spiritual energy and direction that we need in order to do the will of God. Let us take the time each day to sit quietly with the Lord and first thank Him for all that we have: life, health, family and friends, a loving parish community and freedom to pursue our dreams. Then, in gratitude, we need to open ourselves up to the will of God because He certainly has work for us to do for Him and for our brothers and sisters in need. Quiet prayer is an outstanding way to discern how and what to give back to God. What do we mean when we say that through our gratitude we should share our talent? Just exactly what do we mean by talent? Talent is any act of generosity from helping an elderly lady put groceries into her car to organizing and running a charitable organization such as the St. Vincent DePaul Society. There are many things we can do right here at St. Joan of Arc. Think of all the times we have been helped or prayed for by the members of this parish. Maybe it s time for pay back. Giving to our Parish should have a high priority among those charities we choose to help. Clearly, St. Joan of Arc Parish needs our financial help. If we weren t able to make a financial commitment to our Annual Pastoral Appeal, let us consider increasing our Offertory contributions where possible. An attitude of gratitude should always be accompanied by our dare to share. It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis (Deacon Lee is ill, please keep him in your prayers.)

This is the Council that updated our church in our modern world. Pope St John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council, a significant event which, to this day, continues to affect the very flow of contemporary human history. Set against a dramatic backdrop of world events, The Faithful Revolution: Vatican II is the first filmed series to document this council, its decisions, and its profound impact on all of humanity. Told through the eyes of many men and women who witnessed this event firsthand, The Faithful Revolution is an important historical documentary for all Catholics. These videos and discussions will be held in the Nursery room, Tuesdays, 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. The following are the topics that we will discuss. ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL KICKOFF! Today is our commitment weekend for the 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal: Blessed are we Everyone is asked to join Bishop Parkes and all of the parishes and missions throughout our diocese in making a pledge or gift for the benefit of each parish, and more importantly, for the many in need throughout the five counties of our diocese. Every gift is valuable. Sometimes it is hard to envision how one gift could make a difference in an organization the size of our diocese, but it does. Every Catholic in every parish, when united can advance the mission of Christ, loving and serving one another. In times of change and transition, our gifts from God may be more difficult to identify; but we must remember God blesses each of us every day and there is no limit to His mercy. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. Our focus is not equal gift, but equal sacrifice. Be part of the blessing and transform someone s life. Thank you in advance for continuing to support our parish and our parish and our diocesan faith family in so many ways. 2 St Vincent de Paul THRIFT STORE & FOOD PANTRY, 1291 Kass Circle Spring Hill 352-688-3331 (Food list 2) Our SVdP Food Pantry collects these suggested Items each month.
