FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in His native place. The Gospel tells us that [He] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We, too, sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 TODAY S READINGS First Reading They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for His mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is He not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). CATHARINE S PARISH 150 TH ANNIVERSARY Celebrating St. Catharine s 150 Years of Service to God s People Please join us as we celebrate this joyous milestone. We ask that you please save these dates more information about these events will follow. St. Catharine s Family Bonfire Saturday, September 29 th following the 5:00 PM Mass (rain date Sunday, September 30 th ). Gala Celebration Dinner Dance at the Pearl River Hilton Friday, October 19 th. Closing Mass with His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan on Saturday, October 27 th at 5:00 PM. Following Mass, join us for refreshments and our Hall of Memories Exhibit in the gymnasium. There is so much to be grateful for in this, our 150 th Anniversary, and we hope you will share in the joy and beauty of our wonderful parish. THE MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE PLAN THIS WEEKEND Please welcome Fr. Owen Makokowe, a Carmelite Friar from Zimbabwe, who will be with us at all of our masses this weekend to tell us about Carmelite missionary work. The Carmelites respond to the call to love one another through prayer and action by establishing ministries where there is the greatest need. They create humanitarian programs to relieve the suffering of the poor, minister to those in hospitals and prisons, provide education, and conduct spiritual and religious formation in almost 40 countries on five continents. In order to carry out their pastoral programs and social projects, these missionaries depend very much on the generosity of the Christians from parishes they visit. Father Makokowe will speak at all of our masses this weekend and we will have a Second Collection to support the Carmelite Friars missionary work. Thank you for your compassionate caring. PLEASE NOTE AIR CONDITIONING SECOND COLLECTION WILL BE NEXT WEEKEND, JULY 14-15 Due to the visit of Fr. Makokowe this weekend, our Air Conditioning Second Collection has been moved to the following weekend, July 14-15. There have been a few unexpected, rather expensive repairs recently made to the air conditioning system in our Church. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

ST. JUDE SAINT OF HOPE Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. Jude 1:2 To the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jude 1:25 By now, you may surely have noticed our beautiful new statue of St. Jude. This statue is in memory of long-time St. Catharine s parishioner, Catherine O Brien. St. Jude used to be known as the Saint of Lost Causes. However, as a symbol of hope and prayer to millions of people around the world, St. Jude may now rightly be called the Saint of Hope. We invite you to join in this devotion and turn to St. Jude, as a source of strength and inspiration in our faith. We do not know how or when Jude became a disciple. When we first hear of him in the Gospels, he is simply named as an early faithful follower of Jesus. We know St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, and both were two of Jesus original twelve Apostles. They were called brethren, so it is believed they were cousins of Jesus. St. Jude has long been honored as patron of lost causes, possibly because he was often confused with Judas Iscariot who betrayed Our Lord and despaired because of his great sin and lack of trust in God s mercy. Jude is sometimes called Thaddeus to distinguish him from Judas Iscariat. The name Jude means giver of joy, and Thaddeus, means generous and kind. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia with St. Simon preaching and building up the foundations of the early Church. St. Jude died a martyr of God for his unwavering faith around 65 A.D. in Persia or Syria. His body was later brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under St. Peter's Basilica, where it remains. Images of St. Jude often include a flame around his head, which represents his presence at Pentecost when he accepted the Holy Spirit alongside the other apostles. He is also traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This recalls one of the miracles during his work spreading the Word of God. King Abagar of Edessa asked Jesus to cure him of leprosy and sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar s great faith, Jesus pressed His face on a cloth, leaving the image of His face on it. He gave the cloth to St. Jude, who took the image to Abagar and cured him. St. Jude preached the Gospel with great passion, often in the most difficult circumstances. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he made profound differences in people s lives as he offered them the Word of God. Today, more than ever before, the merit of St. Jude is being revived in people s minds and hearts. In return, he is proving himself to be more than an ordinary advocate, taking special delight in coming to the aid and providing hope to persons in desperate need. No petition seems too great for him. St. Jude, Saint of Hope, pray for us. NOVENA TO ST. JUDE (to be said nine days in a row) Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor for all who invoke thee, special patron in time of need; to thee I have recourse from the depth of my heart, and humbly beg thee, to whom God hath given such great power, to come to my assistance; help me now in my urgent need and grant my earnest petition. I will never forget thy graces and the favors thou dost obtain for me and I will do my utmost to spread devotion to thee. Amen. HOPE As Catholics, we have hope. And we need to be able to tell anyone who asks why we are so hopeful. Here are four pretty awesome reasons 1. The first and foremost reason for hope is Jesus Christ. We believe that Christ became Man, took our sins upon Himself, died and then rose again. 2. We have been promised Heaven. If we love God and do His will, we gain eternal happiness with Him in Heaven. 3. The Sacraments are a source of hope. Because we are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, we live in Christ and He in us. In the Eucharist, Christ gives His very Body and Blood; we eat and drink and He lives on in us. 4. We are not in this alone. Yes, our world can be scary and dangerous, but we are never alone! First, Christ promised He would never leave us alone (see John 14). Further, we have a community of brothers and sisters in Christ right here at St. Catharine s to lean on, to help us live better and holier lives, and to pray with and for us. WHEN YOUR HUT S ON FIRE The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none came. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements and to store his few possessions. One day after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames with smoke rolling up to the sky. He was stunned with disbelief, grief and anger. He cried out, God! How could you do this to me? Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island. It had come to rescue him! How did you know I was here? asked the man of his rescuers. We saw your smoke signal, they replied. The Moral of this Story: It s easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn t ever lose hope because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground it just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

A FOND FAREWELL TO OUR LADY OF FATIMA The beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima that we were blessed to have here with us for the month of June has moved on to another Parish. We hope you were able to spend some precious time with her. We would like to thank Maria Arce Bernstein, Tricia McDevitt and Joan McDonough for arranging to bring her here to St. Catharine s Church again this year, and for working hard to make this time special for all of us. Thank you! We were blessed by her beautiful presence. LADIES GUILD THANK YOU TO ROSEMARY PITRUZZELLA We would like to thank Rosemary Pitruzzella who served as the Ladies Guild President for the past two years. Working with our Prayer Shawl Ministry, Rosemary began an outreach effort for all babies baptized at St. Catharine s to receive a welcome basket from the Parish. Thank you, Rosemary! We are looking to reorganize the Ladies Guild. If you have any ideas or would like to help, please contact Kerry Beckmann at kbeckmann@ommsoccer.org. We hope to be back, better than ever, in the Fall. 2019 ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK OPENS TUESDAY, JULY 24 th AT 9:00 AM The 2019 Mass Book will open Tuesday, July 24 th at 9:00 AM for those ACTIVE, REGISTERED PARISHIONERS wishing to arrange Announced Masses for next year. MASS CARDS The giving of a Mass Card to an individual or family is a traditional and honored custom of the Catholic community. Mass Cards may be given or sent for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, for the living, or for a special intention. Special Intention Cards are for a living person, and are obtained for a number of reasons: general good wishes, birthdays, anniversaries, return to good health, in thanksgiving, or, for a particular need or moment in the life of another. There are two types of Mass Cards: An Announced Mass means that the Mass will be celebrated on a certain day at a scheduled Mass time and the Priest will announce the intention to the Congregation. It will be printed in our weekly parish bulletin as well. An Unannounced Mass refers to a Mass which will be celebrated for a person or intention, but is not scheduled for any particular day or time. For this reason, the intention is not printed in our bulletin. The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of July 8 In Loving Memory of Edward Cook, Sr. From Alice & Pat Frawley Please remember the names on our Parish Prayer lists in your own private prayers during the week. Prayer is our most powerful tool for healing and we hope that this will allow us to more consciously remember our parishioners who are in poor health, have recently passed, or are in the Armed Forces. Thank you. For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to heal We pray for God s tender mercy and loving kindness upon all of our loved ones who have experienced health issues.
