CIRCUIT RIDER December 2016 PEARL RIVER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 130 FRANKLIN AVENUE, PEARL RIVER, NY 10965 I therefore beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. ~Ephesians 4:1-3 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ s love, Christmas is a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when people seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it! These are the words of Ebenezer Scrooge s nephew Fred in Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Scrooge s reply Bah Humbug It seems as if most of us fluctuate between the sentiments of Fred and the grumbling of Scrooge during this time of year. The busyness of schedules the expectations of a perfect Christmas and our struggles with the consumerism of the season leave many of us wondering if it is all really worth the effort. Throughout Advent we are looking at the story of Christmas alongside the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his redemption. Ebenezer Scrooge is a man in dire need of a second chance. You see, the Christmas story is a story of God s redeeming love, for a world in need of second chances. And if Scrooge can be redeemed, then so can we! So when we become overwhelmed in this coming month can we take a moment to remember the love that came down at Christmas for us? And when the bells ring out, can we seek out moments of God s peace and trust that God can still make a change in our hearts as well. And in the words of Tiny Tim, are we willing to sing out, God bless us, everyone! In God s wondrous love, Pastor Cyndi (845)-735-2241 CHRISTMAS EVENTS Hanging of the Greens Join us on Saturday, Dec. 3rd at 10am as we prepare our worship space for Christmas. There will be coffee and donuts, fellowship and a chance for you to add your talents to the beautification of our sanctuary for Christmas Eve. Come on out and join us. Christmas Caroling Join us on Sunday Dec. 11th for a time of Christmas caroling. We will gather at the church at 6:00pm and then head out to sing for some of our homebound members. We will return to the church for Hot Cocoa and some Christmas treats around 8:00pm. What a great way to share the joy of this season! CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE AT THE STOUFFER S Sunday Dec. 18th from 4-6:00 pm Join us for a light meal and time of fellowship at the parsonage in Pearl River. Food, fellowship and maybe even a Christmas carol sing-a- long. The parsonage is right next to the church. Our family looks forward to sharing with you. LIVE NATIVITY When: Dec. 18th from 6-8pm Where: Front Lawn of PRUMC Sign up to be a part of bringing the story to life. We need people to play Mary and Joseph, Angels, Wisemen and Shepherds. December 2016 OUTREACH HAPPENINGS!! 3 Give thanks with a grateful heart Sunday, November 20 saw a generous outpouring of donated fresh fruits, vegetables and turkeys. Our children were so very helpful in carrying all of the donated items into the sanctuary where they helped Pastor Cyndi say a special blessing over the collected food. Following the service, 420 pounds of food were taken to People to People's food pantry in Nanuet to help them distribute for Thanksgiving meals to struggling families throughout Rockland County. The staff at People to People commented how much the fresh fruit and vegetables were needed. The Outreach Committee would like to thank you all for your generous giving for those in need. Diane and I would like to thank every one who donated anything for Operation Christmas Child. It was all greatly appreciated. We were able to fill 35 shoe boxes for the children. With everyone's help we were able to brighten a few children s lives. We look forward to your help again next year. Thank you again, Gloria Murphy and Diane Cobb SHOPRITE CARDS It s holiday time. The UMW also had several booths with Crafts, Used Jewelry, Baked Goods, Country Cupboard, a luncheon with home made soup, chili and deserts. There were 5 Whit Elephant booths and the Youth had a gift wrapping table. There are so many people to thank: John Murphy with assistance from Lori Miceli- Waxtel for contacting the many vendors, welcoming them and assisting in placement. John even spent Fri. night at the church to ensure all was well. Jo Ann Lee spent many, many hours setting-up the 5 White Elephant booths, getting helpers and finding a place for everyone. Joline Junghans with Marilyn Nelson provided the hand-made crafts we are known for as well as the Country Cupboard booth. Mary/ Elizabeth Circle were at the Baked booth and also the used Jewelry booth. Deborah Circle members prepared the Luncheon. Greeting cards were written to Service men and women ready for Christmas delivery. The follow-up sera of vendors was very favorable. Most agreed that we were welcoming and helpful, people were friendly and they would return next year. I thank all who helped in so many ways. To date a profit of $5,202.84 has been earned.
