From the desk of Fr. Michael: The Latin Tempus Per Annum ( time throughout the year ) is rendered into English as Ordinary Time. Many sources, online and in print, suggest that Ordinary Time is derived from the word ordinal, meaning numbered, since the Sundays of Ordinary Time, as in other seasons, are ordered numerically. However, other sources suggest the etymology of Ordinary Time is related to our word ordinary ( which itself has a connotation of time and order, derived from the Latin word ordo). Ordinary Time occurs outside of other liturgical time periods, periods in which specific aspects of the mystery of Christ are celebrated. According to The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, the days of Ordinary Time, especially the Sundays, are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. Basically, Ordinary Time encompasses that part of the Christian year that does not fall within the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter. The Catholic Church celebrates two periods of the year as Ordinary Time. The first period begins after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord ( the Sunday after The Epiphany) has ended until Ash Wednesday. The Second period of Ordinary Time runs from the Monday after Pentecost until Evening Prayer is said the night before Advent begins. This includes Christ the King Sunday, the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. Ordinary time does not need to be ordinary, and is not somehow a break from the Liturgical Year. The opposite is actually true: Ordinary Time celebrates the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. Many important liturgical celebrations fall during Ordinary Time, including, Trinity, Corpus Christi, All Saints, the Assumption of Mary and Christ the King. We also may remember and celebrate the parts of Jesus life that were ordinary, much like our own lives. The color of green is appropriate because it is the most ordinary color in our natural environment. THE YEAR OF GRACE 2015 Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the Second day of April and the evening of the Fourth day of April, Easter Sunday being on the Fifth day of April. Each Easter, as on each Sunday, the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of lent, will occur on the Eighteenth day of February. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on Sunday, the Fourteenth day of May. And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the Twenty - Ninth day of November. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the Holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, forever and ever. AMEN. Monday, February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. It is also known as Candlemas Day. Traditionally this is the day for the Blessing of Candles. If you wish to have your candles blessed, please bring them with you to the 7:00am Mass. We will also have available for purchase (Monday to Friday: 9:00am to 4:00pm). Blessed Candles at the Rectory. Cost is $4 for a box of two. FEAST OF ST. BLASÉ - It is a wonderful tradition to Bless Throats asking the intercession of St. Blasé on his Feast day. This year it occurs on Tuesday, February 3rd. Come receive this blessing at the following times: 7:00am Mass 10:00am Service (School children will attend) 4:45pm Service (CCD children will attend) 7:15pm Service (CCD children will attend) Our children will go to Confession for the first time on Saturdays January 24th, 31st, and February 7th. Please pray for our children as they experience the joy of God s forgiveness and love. Our semi-annual Meeting with Heads of Organizations with our Parish Council will be held on Monday, February 9th at 7:30pm in the Library Meeting Room. Each organization should have a representative. It is an opportunity to share your plans for the upcoming months.

From the desk of Fr. Michael: In addition to his parish commitment, priests are often asked to take on additional leadership roles. For example, Fr. Chris serves as Chaplain to the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. I have been asked to serve on the Catholic Schools Regional Board for Dutchess County. Since I have always had a love for Catholic Education, and I want to see our schools succeed, I have accepted this Appointment from Cardinal Dolan. This will involve a number of meetings throughout the year. I also organize, each year, the Catholic School Night at the Hudson Valley Renegades. In addition, I am looking forward to participating in the local Ecumenical Clergy Group that meets monthly. Thanks for understanding when commitments take us briefly away from St. Columba. The annual Catholic Charities Feeding Our Neighbors Campaign will be held again from Sunday, January 25 to Sunday, February 1. Last year, thanks to your support, the campaign raised food and funds for an additional 350,000 meals. Unfortunately, the high demand for emergency food continues. Two very important corporate sponsors have joined with us: Goya Food and Shoprite. Our efforts at St. Columba will help us restock our own St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. So Please, when you come to Mass on January 25 or February1, please bring a donation of non-perishable food with you! Thank you! A question asked - where was Keep Christ in Christmas sign? In the past, a company donated a lift truck to place the sign. They are no longer available to do this. For next year, the parish would have to pay someone OR perhaps a parishioner with a lift truck would be willing to donate their time and truck? Please see Gary if you can help! MICHAEL TO LEAD PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY Fr. Michael McLoughlin has led four different Pilgrimages overseas, including to the Holy Land, France, Spain Portugal and Italy. He is Planning a Pilgrimage to Italy for the summer of 2015 which would include Sorrento, Naples, Amalfi, Pompeii, San Giovanni Rotundo (Padre Pio) and Rome (including a Papal Audience). Dates are July 30th to August 8, 2015. Mass will be offered daily. Tour guide and all services provided by Peter s Way Tours. Brochures are now available in the Rectory. A number of suggestions from the Ministry Fair included ideas like care increased care for the homebound, friendly visits and/ or phone calls, making a meal for a family facing an emergency and driving to doctor appointments. Should we consider beginning a Ministry of Care? Do you have ideas? Do you want to be involved? Would you be a coordinator? Come to a discussion on Monday, January 26 at 7:30pm in the Library.
