Today, Sunday, October 16 th is a great day for celebrating We celebrate the anniversary of the founding of Bethany Presbyterian Church October 18, 1814. We also honor those members who are 80 years old or older and those who have been members for 50 years or more. What can you do? Visit the Historical Room at Bethany, located inside the Library. It will be open with hosts Emily Brady following the 8:15 service and Joe Oyler following the 10:45 service to welcome you. Attend the reception in the Great Room after each service. Cake and refreshments will be served. From the Bethany Session minutes of December 2 nd, 1826: Session met agreeably to previous appointment at the house of the Rev. William Jeffery, and was constituted with prayer. Present- John Nesbett, Moses Middleswart, John Herriott and William Jeffery, Moderator. The following charge was presented to the Session, by John Wilkeson, a member of the Associate Reformed Church, against James Laird. To the Moderator and other members of Session of Bethany Church, I hereby charge James Laird, a member of your church, with slandering my character, having said in the hearing of John Nesbett Sr., that he said Laird could prove I had taken out of Isaac Walker s mill, six or eight bushels of his wheat; and also, he stated in presence of Isaac Walker, that some said I took, three bushels some six some eight bushels of his wheat, without order or permission, from him or any of his sons; and that this should have taken place between the last week in September and the last of October, given under my hand, this 2 nd day of December 1826. The above charge I will prove by the following witnesses: John Wilkeson, George Gibson, James McClemmons, William Elliott, John Nesbett Sr., John Nesbett Esq., Robert Robinson, Margaret Laird, Isaac Walker. On motion, resolved, that the above charge be taken up, and that Mr. Laird be requested to meet with Session on Monday next, to receive a copy of said charge, with names of the witnesses to support it. Parking for Sunday Services it is requested that members not use the parking spaces nearest the church entrance. The Property Team would like to reserve the front row spaces for the elderly, for those with special needs and for visitors. Those who may have a greater need than others just might get discouraged from attending church because they have to walk so far. Commissioners needed for upcoming Presbytery meetings: Any ordained Elder, even if not currently serving on Session, is eligible to be a Commissioner Representative for Bethany at Presbytery Meetings. There are three remaining Presbytery meetings scheduled for 2011: October 20 Lebanon Presbyterian Church December 10 First Presbyterian, Pittsburgh (Saturday) If you are interested in being a Commissioner at one of these upcoming Presbytery meetings, please contact the Clerk of Session, Beckie Price, or the church office. Need Scrip? What is Scrip? Scrip is gift cards that are sold after worship in the Welcome Center or at the office during the week to raise money for our mission trips. This is the easiest fundraiser you will ever participate in because it doesn t cost you anymore than you already spend. We have cards for Shop n Save, Giant Eagle, Walmart, Kmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, There are cards for Starbucks, Wendy s, Kings, Bob Evans, Eat & Park, Subway, Red Lobster and many more restaurants. We even have cards for BP and Sunoco. Giant Eagle cards can be used to purchase other cards at the store. Thank you for supporting the mission work of the church through this program. SuEllen Dillon will be at the SCRIP table after the 8:15 service Samaritan s Purse/Operation Christmas Child boxes are available on the table outside of the Nursery. Pick-up one and follow the instructions in the box. These are gifts for children ages 2 thru 14. All boxes must be returned by November 6 th. 5

A meeting of the General Assembly of the PCUSA will be held in Pittsburgh in July of 2012. Presbytery is seeking assistance over the next several months and has asked that each church designate a Local Congregational Contact to be the Pittsburgh Presbytery's primary conduit to the members of our congregation for communications. The requirements/duties for this position are posted on the website www.cola2012.org. Please contact Beckie Price if you are interested in serving Bethany as this contact person. Adult Classes Why not give one of them a try. If you find the one you chose isn t really what you were looking for try another one. Just give us a try. We meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and there are classes for children ages 2 and up along with a nursery for those under 2. Bring your coffee and come. Fred Gossic leads a class on the Bible Book of Acts by John MacArthur, upstairs in Room 224. Mark & Kitty Rackley have a Video and Discussion Class downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Tom Clarke will begin his class today on one of the books of the Bible upstairs in the Bride s Room. Dan Wolfe & Karen Talerico team teach the Wired Word class. This is a weekly discussion on a topic in the news that particular week with biblical commentary. This class meets downstairs in the Bethany Room. MOPS and MOMSnext - All moms are welcome to join us for the 2011-2012 year! This year s theme is MomSense: Bold * Loving * Sensible. Registration is currently being accepted for MOPS (for moms with infants through Kindergarten) and MOMSnext (for moms with children in Kindergarten through 12 th grade). MOPS meets the 2 nd and 4 th Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. MOMSnext meets the 1 st and 3 rd Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. See information in the Welcome Center or contact Jennifer Wallis (MOPS) at 412-257-2263 or Mandy Evans (MOMSnext) at 724-926- 4049 with any questions. Golden Oldies reminder of the date change. The Golden Oldies will gather at noon on Thursday, October 27 th. Coffee will be ready at 10:30. Wear a hat and bring a can of food for the Food Bank. 6

The Bethany Youth Ringers will start rehearsals on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 pm in the choir room. There is still room for extra ringers. Practices are from 7:00 until 7:45. Calling all men! We are in the process of scheduling a few Sundays when a small ensemble of men will sing for Worship at both 8:15 and 10:45 services. If you would like to participate see John Henninger. The first date to sing will be October 23. You do not need to be a regular member of the choir to add your voice! Blood Drive The Deacons will be sponsoring a blood drive, in cooperation with the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh, on Sunday, October 30 th from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. here at the church. Looking for an excuse to dust off the old Air Jordans and rain threes? Then come on down to Bethany Thursday nights at 8:00 for basketball. COMMUNITY EVENTS The Pumpkin Patch has come to the Bridgeville Methodist Church, Station Street, thru the 31 st. Pumpkins can be purchased Monday thru Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Proceeds benefit flood victims. Fall Fest 2011 to benefit A Heart for Hydrocephalus Association on Sunday, October 30 th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This Association is a group of people who wish to raise awareness about the condition of hydrocephalus and support research and the community of people affected by it. This event is sponsored by Sylvester & Tweeties Banquet Hall, 8800 Roberts Hollow Road, Elizabeth, PA, off route 51 just south of the Elizabeth exit.
