Page 2 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News July 9, 2017 Sing a Joyful Song to the Lord, Alleluia! As I drove into the Mason Street parking lot on Sunday morning, my eyes darted right and left looking for a parking spot. I was early for the 11:00am mass, and the 9:00am mass was still in session so the lot appeared to be full. Finally, to my relief, I saw a car back out of a spot which I immediately pulled into. The reason I was so early is that I am a choir member, and rehearsal starts at 10:10am on Sunday mornings in preparation for the 11am mass. This has been my routine (in one form or another) for over half a century. St. John Eudes choir came into existence in 1963 under the guidance of our founding pastor, Msgr. Phillip Grill. Initially there were 12 members who were kiddingly called The Twelve Apostles. Besides me, two of the Apostles are still active in SJE parish (Jim Gergen and Pat Langeland). We were blessed to have Ray Blow as our first director. Ray was well versed in Catholic liturgies and how our sacred music relates to these liturgies. He was a motivating director who gave purpose and dedication to the choir members, but most important, he created a sense of family among the members which still exists today and has grown stronger over the years. At that time mass was celebrated in the Rancho San Antonio auditorium, and it was not unusual for a dog or cat to wander in and join the celebration. In 1990 Adriane Torrisi accepted the position of SJE Music Director as she was pursuing her doctorate at USC. Adraine had a major impact on the choir. She had a deep reverence for the mass which was instilled in us. Besides encouraging congregational participation, she challenged the choir to sing more difficult pieces of our beautiful liturgical music. Whether contemporary, Gregorian chant or classical, she insisted (in her persuasive Sicilian way) that all be well done. As a result, not only did the choir improve, but it attracted more singers into the organization. In 1996 after receiving her DMA, Adriane enter the convent of the Sisters Devoted to the Sacred Heart and is now Sister Adriane Torrisi, SDSH. We are fortunate to have Dr. Dana Howell as our current director. In addition to expanding our repertoire, he has introduced the choir to the rich heritage of the exceptional music of our Hispanic and Filipino communities. Choir member seem to have a calling. They all have a willingness to serve, dedication, and come from many occupations and different walks of life; but regardless of their private backgrounds, they all share a desire to serve God in a special way, through song not as mere entertainment or performances, but as a form of prayer which hopefully can move others to pray as well. St. Augustine is credited as saying He who sings, prays twice, and we choir members know that singing is a wonderful way to pray. Come sing with us! Page 6 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News July 9, 2017 COME TO ME, ALL YOU WHO LABOR How perfectly Jesus invitation accords with summer s spirit: Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened... Take my yoke upon you and learn from me... you will find rest (Matthew 11:28, 29). Yet, as comforting as Jesus invitation sounds, don t we sometimes wish God would stage a miracle or two to jolt the world out of complacency and unbelief, ushering in the Kingdom with some irrefutable evidence of heavenly power, divine purpose? But would such miracles really accomplish anything? As today s Gospel opens, Jesus praises his Father s odd plan. The wise and learned, whose theological education and religious observance should have guaranteed their grasp of Jesus message, and whose power and prestige could have advanced Jesus mission, have completely missed the point. Meanwhile, the simple and powerless prove little enough to trust Jesus (take his yoke) and open enough to learn from him. Perhaps they understood that as Joseph s one-time apprentice, Jesus the carpenter was referring to the yokes of that time, custom-molded to each animal s shoulders and always made for two, so that animals walking side by side encouraged each other. In hidden guise, as Zechariah envisioned, this humble king enters our world still. But to those Paul describes as in the flesh (i.e., locked into worldly values), a humble kingdom that invites but does not compel is no kingdom at all. A discipleship that goes above and beyond is neither easy nor light. But we are in the spirit; we see with Jesus eyes, judge by Jesus standards, delight with Jesus in his Father s plan... don t we? There will be no hospitality over the summer. Hospitality will return in September! Nellie Newman, Phil McManama & Jaime Garcia, S.H. DID YOU KNOW? Protect against potential danger... Taking a few precautions can help children learn to protect themselves against potential danger and ease parents minds. Teach children to memorize their full name, address, and phone number, so they can provide the information to an adult if they are separated from their parents or caregiver. Instruct children to look for a police officer or other safe adult (e.g., a store or park employee) if they need assistance. Teach them how and when to dial 911.
