LAY DIRECTOR(S) How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. From Psalm 104 One of our favorite spots to visit on our vacations is my aunt s cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The Creator s hand is never so evident as on a crystal lake decorated with a jade necklace of towering pines. It s a place where God reveals his greatness in the soaring of eagles through azure skies, the graceful leaps of whitetail deer, and even the comical call of the common loon. On The Lake, the sunset meets the water in a cascade of rippled color, as the glowing orb melts into liquid fire. It is a nightly spectacle. I am never closer to God than I am here in this place. One can expect some close encounters with God s creation in the Northwoods. But on our most recent visit, I had a unique experience. Call it a Close Encounter of the Bird Kind. Ever the shutterbug, I was taking pictures of a young chickadee in an evergreen in my aunt s front yard. Cautiously moving ever closer to get a better shot, I suddenly lost the bird in my camera s field of vision. At the same moment, I felt something on my hand. I took my eye away from the viewfinder, and to my surprise, the subject of my photo shoot was now perched contentedly on my right hand. I gave my camera to someone else to take a picture; who would believe this? The chickadee happily remained on my hand until I gave him (or her how can you tell?) a little nudge back onto the branch a few minutes later. So I am now officially The Bird Whisperer, although I claim no special powers over our feathered friends. Our pastor glanced at the photo of me with the bird and quipped, Barb of Assisi. No explanation on why he chose to leave out the Saint part (my apologies to St. Francis of Assisi, noted friend to animals). I see my babe chick encounter as one of life s little blessings. I believe the Lord gives us these special moments to remind us of the importance of taking time to appreciate His marvelous creation and offer praise to the Creator. This world didn t get here by accident. Each treasured piece was carefully and lovingly crafted by the hand of God, from chickadees to His children. The Bible says that not a sparrow falls without His notice. If He cares for a dime-a-dozen sparrow (or a lowly chickadee), how much more does He care for you! When I looked up verses on creation for this message, I came upon the above referenced passages from Psalm 104, which should sound familiar to every one of you who has turned to Page 42 on your VdC Weekend and Fourth Day: When you send your Spirit, they (we) are created, and you renew the face of the earth. Here is our prayer for all of the babe chicks of Living Water: May you be renewed in Spirit with the promise of each new sunrise. May you always be in awe of what God can do. And may you find it impossible to keep that to yourself! GLYASDW! Barb and Joe Geerts #16 Lay directors

From the desk of the Spiritual Director Greetings Brothers and Sisters In Christ, One of the umpty-nine e-mails that I get on a regular basis is an e-newsletter from Sr. Joan Chittister. Some of you may know of her - she is a well known and prolific writer on things spiritual. This last e-newsletter was titled Show me a Dreamer. And she started out with an Aboriginal proverb - Those who lose dreaming are lost. If you know about Aboriginal culture, you know that their version of creation began with the dreaming of creation into existence. Well - our scriptures tell us that God spoke creation into existence - but I think God had dreams as well I think God s dream was (and is) for all of creation to be made new - to be in relationship and unity with God - and to be at peace with one another. That s a BIG dream. But this is NOT an impossible dream - and God s dream for this Via de Cristo community is not impossible either. As God s children we cannot lose sight of what God wants for us, for we will surely be lost. As the hands and feet of God, we are given the task of working together to make those dreams a reality. And while it is sometimes slow and tedious work, it is also joyful and rewarding. We are gearing up for the 46 th Living Water VdC weekend. And the dream? That we will be full to capacity - that all participants (and team members!) will have a spirit filled experience - and come away revitalized, refreshed and renewed. Broken dreams are sad only when they are not pursued - so with prayerful diligence, let us be one of God s heartbeats. GLYASDI Pastor Vicki Spiritual Director

From Communications E-mails for prayer requests, joys and thanksgivings to be shared with the community can be emailed to either: prayers@livingwaterviadecristo.org or qcharts@sbcglobal.net Or call: 309-792-9030 Check out our website: www.livingwaterviadecristo.org In His service, Cindy Hart Communications Chair Greetings from the Fall Weekend # 46 Rector and Rectora Find out how much God has given you and from it, take what you need; the remainder is needed by others. ~Saint Augustine As we write this, we are days away from the first Living Water Via de Cristo Mixed Weekend #46 team training. We are in awe of the beautiful and talented people that will be serving this fall. Together, we are on a mission to serve our Savior, by shining his light to the candidates that will attend the fall weekend. Some might say that this team consists of everyday people coming together to do extraordinary things. Each person has been asked to walk out of their everyday life and to faithfully train, prepare, give, and serve as a humble servant to people that they may not even know. The quote above from Saint Augustine reminds us to be grateful for all God has given us and to share whatever we don t need. Serving on team requires many sacrifices such as time, physical and mental energy, money, love, and humility to name just a few. Each person brings different sacrifices to the team, but we rest assured that as we give of ourselves, God will take care of our every need. In Ephesians 2:10, we find comfort as we read, For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. The fall weekend has already been planned by Christ, and he will prepare our hearts and minds as we faithfully tread the journey. We are counting on that promise, and he is counting on us. As you pray for Living Water Mixed Weekend #46, please consider these prayer requests: 1. Lord, if it be your will, please place the name of a friend or family member on my heart to ask to attend the upcoming weekend. Remind me to turn to you for guidance before extending the invitation to them. 2. Lord, watch over team #46 as they begin their trainings. Fill them with joy as they humbly serve you. Help them to find direction around obstacles that may occur along the path. Be with them and guide them. 3. Lord, help me to find some way to be a part of the weekend. The community has so many ways to serve; lead me to share a part of myself in some sacrificial way. Let others see your Light in me.

Amen God loves you and so do we! Jim & Debbie Case and Cindy Hart Rector/Rectora Head Cha From your Palanca Chair Now is your chance to get the prayer vigil slot of your choice. The prayer vigil for Living Water Via de Cristo Mixed Weekend #46 is posted. Please consider signing up as it means so much to all the participants. The following will take you directly to the prayer vigil: http://3dayol.org/vigil/getvigil.phtml?pvid=7263&commid=575 Palanca Chairs Jim and Patty Turner From Pre-Weekend Chair Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. As we are called to ministry in our church families, we are also called to a mission in the world. A mission to those who not only don't know Christ yet, but also to our fellow believers that they don't fall away or get lost. Weren't we taught that Christianity isn't lived in isolation, but in community? You are that community, We are that Community. Our prayer is that as Living Waters Via de Cristo weekend #46 is soon approaching that we remember that we are called. Remember that before your weekend that God called you? He may have done it through someone else, but, that person loved you so much that they were there for you when

you needed. Don't you want to be that reflecting Christ's love to someone that you love or care about? Are we missing a call to Act? As the mixed weekend is coming up we are accepting the candidates applications as they come in. We send out acceptance letters and letters to the sponsors who sponsor them. We are excited to see not only the willingness of the candidate to say yes, but also the willingness to act as a sponsor of a candidate. We pray that in the next few days and weeks that you will strongly meditate on those people that you care about deeply enough to pray for to attend a weekend. We say pray for because if God has put them on your heart to consider asking them to attend a weekend, you should pray about it before you act. Please pray also for the team of weekend #46, for Rector/Rectora Jim and Debbie Case and Head Cha Cindy. That God continues to prepare them to act in service to Him. Date & location of your VdC or other weekend Weekend number Note to the applicant s pastor: This member from your congregation has applied to attend an upcoming Via de Cristo weekend sponsored by the Illowa Lutheran Coalition. These weekends are designed to provide faith renewal for Christians by grounding them more fully in God s grace and in the disciplines of prayer, study and service. It is our hope that participants in the weekend will return to their home parishes renewed and better equipped to serve their church as leaders. Therefore we expect participants in the weekend to be active members of their church. Like Marriage Encounter, which seeks to strengthen healthy marriages rather than heal troubled ones, Via de Cristo is designed to strengthen faith rather than provide spiritual conversion for a struggling Christian. In addition, it is our hope that married persons will be able to attend consecutive weekends so that they can share the experience together. This can be a very positive thing. If one partner is unable to do this, but could at a later date, we encourage the couple to wait. If one partner simply doesn t want to attend a weekend and is unlikely to ever do so in the future, then we wish to know whether or not you as their pastor have any concerns about the impact of the weekend on their marriage. If you do not have any concerns about your parishioner s involvement in this weekend, we ask for your signature of support. If you have any apprehension, we would appreciate hearing from you in writing. If you wish to talk further to one of our spiritual directors concerning Via de Cristo, please call Pastors, Terrie Wilder @ 815 677-3444 or Vickie Sauter @ 815-849-9182. Thank you for taking this under consideration. Sponsor s Checklist: The applicant s portion of the application (Part I) is complete. The applicant s check is attached. The applicant s pastor has signed the application (Part II). I believe this applicant will benefit from a Via de Cristo weekend. I have read the responsibilities of the sponsor and agree to abide by them. Sponsor s signature Date
