Founded in 1924 in the belief that there is more that binds us together than separates us in the worship of God. 9.2.2018 CHAPEL 8:00 A.M. C 2 SERVICE (COMMUNITY HALL) 9:25 A.M. SANCTUARY SERVICE 10:15 A.M. WELCOME Recognizing the wide welcome offered to all through Jesus Christ, Community Church opens its arms to all. We strive to offer Christ s wide welcome to all people, regardless of creed, age, race, or sexual identity. We invite you to join our congregation in worship and in membership, as we allow our lives to be shaped by the loving outreach of Christ.

THE WORSHIP OF GOD *Please rise in body or spirit. Bold text indicates congregational participation. Teachers will lead children age 4 through 5 th grade to Sunday school after the Passing of the Peace. Nursery care available during our C 2 and Sanctuary services. Our services are live-streamed via internet, capturing the chancel & the congregation and may appear on social media. On Communion Sundays we invite you to put a small offering in the Deacon s Fund envelope (found in the pew racks) and place in the offering plate. The Deacon s Fund serves our members who face emergency needs. THE GATHERING OF THE PEOPLE PRELUDE Clair de Lune Andrew Galuska, organ Louis Vierne COMMUNITY WORDS CHIMING OF THE HOUR Rev. David W. Johnson CALL TO WORSHIP AND OPENING PRAYER Dr. Casey G. Baggott *PROCESSIONAL HYMN AND ENTRANCE OF THE CHRIST LIGHT God Is Here ABBOT S LEIGH *LITANY Joyce Smith On this Labor Day, we remember all those who make our cities and towns work: those that work outside in the heat, and those who keep our homes cool, those that work as leaders and teachers and administrators, artists and craftspeople, office staff, and retail workers. 2

Those who care for children, and for the elderly. We are reminded that we too need rest to rejuvenate our bodies and souls. Let us pray. *UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION Great Creator God, we praise You today for the works of Your hands, the wonders of our universe. We thank You for the creative gift in each of us: to imagine and build, to teach and to learn, to manage and distribute. Forgive us when we find our worth in what we do. Forgive us when we view our schedules to be more important than rest. Forgive us, and let us find peace and rest in your kingdom. Amen *WORDS OF ASSURANCE Dr. Casey G. Baggott *GLORIA PATRI Elaine Matthes Children grades Pre-K through 5 th grade are invited to join us for Sunday School. (Sanctuary 10:15 a.m.) Parents of visiting children are asked to escort their child to their classroom in order to fill out contact information. *PASSING OF THE PEACE ANTIPHONAL READING ATTENDING TO GOD S WORD Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon. Psalm 104: 1-5, 10-13, 19-24 Cantor and Congregation 1Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty, 2 wrapped in light as with a garment. You stretch out the heavens like a tent, 3 you set the beams of your chambers on the waters, you make the clouds your chariot, you ride on the wings of the wind, 4 you make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers. 5 You set the earth on its foundations, so that it shall never be shaken. Cantor and Congregation 10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills, 11 giving drink to every wild animal; the wild asses quench their thirst. 12 By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation; they sing among the branches. 13 From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. Cantor and Congregation 19 You have made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. 20 You make darkness, and it is night, when all the animals of the forest come creeping out. 21 The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. 22 When the sun rises, they withdraw and lie down in their dens. 23 People go out to their work and to their labor until the evening. 24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Cantor and Congregation RESPONSE May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. Amen. 3

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES Dr. Casey G. Baggott God s message finds utterance in our midst. We wait and listen for God s word to us today. Genesis 3:17-19 17 And to the man he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return. RESPONSE The scriptures are living and active, offering wisdom and understanding. In ancient words we find guidance for today. *HYMN OF DEVOTION Take My Life HENDON THE GOSPEL LESSON Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. May your Word be proclaimed and received here today. 4 Elaine Matthes

RESPONSE Luke 10:38-42 38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet and listened to what he was saying. 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me. 41 But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42 there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God! SERMON Live to Work, Work to Live Rev. David W. Johnson By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Gen 3:19a MUSICAL MEDITATION The Gathering Fields Jill Truax, piano David Nevue UNISON CALL TO OFFERING THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Joyce Smith These offerings, O God, represent the fruit of our labor: our paychecks, retirement income, investments, and more. We give them freely today, and pray that they would be used to further your kingdom here on earth. Amen. OFFERTORY Take My Life and Let It Be Consecrated Rachel Carter, soprano Arr. Mark Hayes Jill Truax, piano CALL TO COMMUNION SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION Clergy of the Church God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us thank God. It is good to give God thanks and praise. Let us pray. Generous God, pour out your Spirit upon us, and upon the gifts of the bread and cup here at your table. As they are the body of your servant and the spirit of your compassion, so may we become the healing and hope the world longs for in our time. As we face adversity, may it produce in us maturity. As you touch our life with grace may we be quick to speak of justice. As you pour your love into our hearts, may our lives be marked by generous acts of kindness, so that our actions match the words that we say. By your grace we are created and called to your service - sharpen our vision for your kingdom and strengthen us by your Holy Spirit to carry out the ministry you set before us. Amen. 5
