DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Fourth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2009 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Every year, on the fourth Sunday of Easter, the lectionary passages for the day include Psalm 23 and a gospel account that emphasizes Jesus as the good shepherd. The fourth Sunday in Eastertide is therefore often designated as Good Shepherd Sunday. Sheep are routinely considered to be silly, stubborn animals, and the shepherd comes to symbolize the loving care and attentiveness towards what would otherwise be naturally unloveable. In both the Old and New Testaments, God is frequently identified as the devoted shepherd to his people.

At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will also be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. GATHERING ORGAN PRELUDE Concerto in G Major, BWV 592 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) GREETING *PROCESSIONAL HYMN 559 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation WESTMINSTER ABBEY *PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND WORDS OF ASSURANCE (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *PEACE (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) PROCLAMATION PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (in unison) Risen Christ, faithful shepherd of your Father s sheep: teach us to hear your voice and to follow your command, that all your people may be gathered into one flock, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. FIRST LESSON Acts 4:5-12 (page 113 in the pew Bible) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

MUSICAL OFFERING Variations on a Theme in Ancient Style (Part I) Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961) PSALM Psalm 23 (read in unison) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. *GRADUAL HYMN 138 (stanzas 1-3) The King of Love My Shepherd Is (All turn to face the Gospel Procession.) GOSPEL LESSON John 10:11-18 (pages 97-98) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
