Services and Notices Sunday 6 th December 2015 Second Sunday of Advent A very warm welcome to all our visitors today. Please feel free to introduce yourself to one of the clergy after the service. Please let us know if you are new and would like to join our regular congregations or would like to know more about how we can support you in your faith. Please, take this Pew Slip away with you so that you can refer to the notices contained in it. Please, also use it to prompt prayers for this Cathedral and all that we seek to do in God s service. Large print versions of the Order of Service and this notice sheet are available. Please ask a member of Select Vestry or a Verger if you would like one. An induction loop system is also in operation for hearing aid users. At every Eucharist in the Cathedral gluten free wafers are available for those who need them. Please request one as you receive communion. Dean: The Very Revd John Dobson Cathedral Office: 01765 603462 In Residence: The Dean Website: www.riponcathedral.org.uk

A Note from the Dean Welcome to the Cathedral. A special welcome if you are joining us for the first time. Please, complete a Welcome Card if you would like to give us your contact details. The Cathedral Prayer Diary: an invitation to be united in daily prayer Prayer is at the heart of our discipleship as Christians. As human beings, we can naturally find ourselves praying; reaching out to the God who is beyond us and yet for whom we naturally long. As St. Augustine wrote, Lord, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. As Christians we are taught to pray to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Spirit. We can spend a life time working at this and still knowing that we have further to go. Comfort comes from learning that all our praying reveals that God is working in us, as St. Paul writes in his Letter to the Romans, The Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very spirit interceded with sight too deep for words. And God who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Thank goodness, then, for the work of the Spirit! Our hope is that through our prayer we and the world become more as God would have us be. One benefit is that being united in prayer makes us more untied with each other, something for which Christ himself prayed on the night before he died, according to St. John s Gospel. We launched the first edition of the Cathedral Prayer Diary earlier in the year as an aid to our praying as individuals, and also to enable us to be untied in and through our prayers each day, even though we cannot gather together every day of the year. We promised that, having received your comments, we would revise it and publish a second, revised edition. We have kept our promise and copies of that revised edition are now available. Please, do ensure that you take a copy and make an effort to use it every day of the year. Advent & Reflections for Daily Prayer Here is another resource to enrich our daily prayer. Reflections for Daily Prayer is a Church of England publication designed to enhance your spiritual journey through the rich landscape of the Church's year. Each day, Monday to Saturday, it offers a highquality Bible reflection based on one of the Morning Prayer Bible readings. Respected Anglican writers, theologians, ministers and scholars offer insightful yet accessible reflections that combine creative thought with high levels of scholarship. It is available as an App or in book form. Books, which run from Advent to Advent, are available through the Cathedral Shop ( 16.99 (5.4p per day)). Due to high demand, the shop has sold out twice. This has been both encouraging to me and a source of frustration to some members of the Cathedral congregations. If you would like us to obtain a copy for you, please sign the list near the Congregation Notice Board south of the Crossing.

Confirmation Preparation I am pleased that Bishop Paul Slater has agreed to conduct a confirmation service here at the Cathedral on Sunday, 3 July 2016. Preparation classes will begin for young people aged School Year and upwards from after the February half-term holiday. I will be preparing adults for confirmation from the same time with a course that will take place at Minster House on Thursday evenings. As last year, this will be designed to suit not only those adults who are preparing for confirmation, but also those who wish to know more about the faith without any commitment and those who would like to take advantage of a refresher course. The Cathedral Council Since the 1999 legislation restructuring governance in our Cathedrals, each Cathedral has had a Cathedral Council as part of its corporate body. This exists to be a critical friend of the Chapter, scrutinising its work and giving counsel. Here in Ripon, the Cathedral Council consists of people from across the region as well as those representing the Cathedral congregation and the City. We benefit from the skills and insights that they bring. Since the creation of Ripon Cathedral Council, Dr Colin Harrison has been its Chair bringing a wonderful ability to steer and drive its business in a gentle and popular way. Now that Colin has become a Capitular Canon (a member of the Cathedral Chapter) it has been necessary for him to resign as Chair of the Council: he chaired his final meeting on Saturday, 28 November. There were many expressions of gratitude for all that he has done in this role. Please do thank him yourself if you have the opportunity. Advent Procession and Refreshments: Thank You The Advent Procession last Sunday evening was enjoyed by a record number of people: over 500 in total, including over 60 children. Many of those people made a point of telling me how much they appreciated it; some had travelled over fifty miles to be with us. I would like to thank everyone who played any part in making it the success that it was; not least the choir and those who contributed to the very-welcome refreshments. It is also a prompt to us all to take advantage of the wonderful season services that will be taking place in the Cathedral over the coming weeks. Please, do use the opportunity that they offer to invite family, neighbours and friends to join us in worship: they have the potential to be a turning point for some people. The Cathedral supporting the parishes This morning, I am leading worship at Christ Church, Skipton. Please, pray for the parish as it prepares to welcome its new vicar, the Revd Ruth Harris. With my very best wishes Dean John

This is certainly the case with the Cathedral. To develop further our communication with regular Cathedral worshippers, we are beginning to email the pew slip as the Weekly Newsletter to everyone who would like to receive it. It will be sent every Friday, when it will also continue to be posted on the website. If you are not one of the sixhundred people who have already signed up for email communication from us, then you can do so via the Cathedral website: www.riponcathedral.org.uk or by email: to judithbustard@riponcathedral.org.uk. Some of the advantages of this development are that you can read the details of the Sunday services in advance particularly helpful on those infrequent occasions when times change. Prayer Pyramid If you want to be an intercessor on the Prayer Pyramid, please contact Mary Waiting on 01765 690367. St Mary Magdalen s Almshouses The Trustees seek applications from suitably qualified persons (aged 50 and over who have lived in Ripon and the surrounding district for at least 5 years) to fill a single vacancy at their Almshouses on Magdalen s Road, Ripon. Enquiries and applications to be made in writing stating name, address and age by 29 th November to the Clerk/Administrator to the Trustees, c/o Ripon Cathedral Office, Liberty Courthouse, Minster Road, Ripon HG4 1QS. Salvation Army The Salvation Army once again wants to express how grateful they are for the ongoing support of the Cathedral congregation. Often individuals or organisations start to offer food etc but the interest tapers off. The consistent, and generous support given by the Cathedral congregation means that the Salvation Army in Ripon are able to offer reliable support for the 40 families currently on their books. As we have mentioned before in the run up to Xmas please would you consider how you could help to give these families a bit of seasonal cheer for example crackers, seasonal cakes or biscuits, chocolates, etc. For the young children simple gifts of games, books, or sweets and for teenagers gift sets of toiletries, tokens, stationary goods, etc. The basic food supplies continue to be useful too, things like fruit juices, coffee, instant mash potatoes, etc. Your donations do make a difference! If you wish to make a monetary donation to the Ripon Salvation Army, cheques made out to The Salvation Army Ripon Corps may be sent to Ripon Salvation Army Reach Out Centre, Lead Lane, RIpon HG4 2NE.

Giving by Gift Aid Our financial support of the Cathedral s mission is an expression of our gratitude to God for all that we receive from him. It does strengthen the mission, however, if the Cathedral can reclaim any tax that has been paid on our offerings. If you are a UK taxpayer, please consider Gift-Aiding your donation. For every 1 you give, we will receive 1.25. Gift Aid envelopes are available in the pews or from the Sidespeople. Please use the envelope and sign it there is no extra cost to you. If you would prefer to give by electronic banking the details are as follows: Account Name: Ripon Cathedral PCC Fund Sort Code: 05 07 17 Account number: 35697334 If you are a regular worshipper at the Cathedral and would like to know more about our planned giving scheme, please contact Liz Thomas, Planned Giving Officer (Tel: 01765 606118) or have a word with one of the clergy. We are very grateful for your financial support. Without it the worship and ministry of this Cathedral Church simply could not happen.
